Since I finished a project this week (Neptune), I figured that starting something new would give my spirits a boost. I got to thinking about picking fabrics and colors that were a bit out of my norm. After rummaging a bit in the stash closet, I surfaced with two layer cakes of Saltbox Harvest by Deb Strain for Moda. The colors in this collection are brown, black, red, rust, gold and green. Not too far away from my favorite colors, but the prints are a bit more whimsical than I usually go for.
What to use for a pattern? Why, a Schnibbles pattern I have had on my radar for quite some time seemed just right. Roundabout by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.
To make the blocks, you need to make loads of the units shown above. You assemble them around a center 2 1/4 inch square, using a partial seam. Are you afraid of partial seams? Don't be. They are not difficult at all.
Aren't these blocks adorable? They finish at six inches. I plan to make the quilt larger than the usual table topper Schnibbles size. I was thinking I might make 100 blocks and arrange them 10 by 10, and add on a final border in that cute tree print–maybe the one with the black background? This fabric is perfect for the end of summer/early fall I think. And a lap sized quilt would look so nice on the back of one of my brown leather chairs in the family room.
It's interesting, but I can often see things better in a photograph than with my naked eyes. That light background polka dot? I think it is too light and doesn't look so good with the other higher contrast blocks. The light background prints don't bother me as much, but I think I might have to not use anymore of that lightest polka dot.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! Eat healthy and take a walk, if you can!

I always try to take out the lights, or whatever colour I’m using for the background. It drives me nuts, but then I’m blind as a bat so maybe have a harder time seeing the subtle differences.

This is going to be really cute. I need to stretch my colors as well. I usually don’t sew with the oranges as they don’t look good in my house. I’m redecorating my guest room this fall into something that I can add holidays quilts to. I have some orphan fall blocks that I’ll put together for a throw and put on the bed for fall.

I LOVE Saltbox Harvest…it’s the dots and fall colors that pull me in! I’m in the middle of a roundabout table runner for my daughter that I need to finish.
I like your idea of super sizing your Roundabout!!

Funny how you mentioned the photo perspective. I always take photos of the design wall to look at the block placement. It really makes those clusters of colors pop and you can then rearrange before sewing it all together. I can see how that light would bug you. It keeps the block ’roundness’ from closing completely. The others have just enough color to keep the imagery going. This one will be a wonderful Fall piece.

I agree with the light backgrounds fabrics. When I made this Schnibble, I made sure to take out all the lights. It makes it look like a link is missing in the chains.
Adorable fabrics. Love your pattern choice.

I was thinking that the first pic was your layout, with the houses and weeping tree. I love that label. I’d but the fabric just to have the label as a pattern. Love these colors, they are also in my color scheme. Does hosting a party count as a walk?

Love that quilt block. It looks fun and easy too.
I’m trying to do the eat healthy thing. But taking a walk is difficult these days with heat indexes hovering around 105.

I love your fabric/pattern combo! What is fun is to see that fabric in use… I think I would have just passed right over it but it is really cute, especially in that pattern… but I agree– ditch the light polka dot:)

I always design with a camera that is set to Black and White. It is the best way to 1) get distance from your blocks and 2) see value. Quilting is all about value. I just put a P9P top on my wall, every block was different fabric combos as it was a swap. I must have taken 6 or 7 pics, moved blocks around, just to mix up the values. I love how it turned out. Yes, I would toss the polka dot in this project.

Partial seams?? I don’t even know what that entails. I can see where you might be using them in the quilt but how does it all come together?? :S
I love this collection but I don’t have any of it yet.

I agree that the lights for this one should go. I made this quilt awhile back using the lights…I’d only had the two charm packs and should have pulled lights out and filled in with other fabric to match. Your choice of fabric is delightful!!

I think I would take out the polka dot too – the other light backgroud have a bigger pattern so that’s why they seem to work better. I have not done a partial seam but I have a pattern that has one…something new to learn. Lookin good!

It’s going to be fabulous in those fabrics. I made the small Schnibble and really enjoyed it.

Wonderful pattern and more wonderful fabrics, especially the saltbox and tree fabrics! I’m in agreement about the cute polka-dot print. It will be perfect for a different project.
Don’t you love having seasonal quilts to enliven you home?!
Hugs!

I love it when the fall colours start to show up. I agree with the polka dot fabric. Have you ever tried a “peep hole”? These can be purchased at any hardware store.

That’s adorable. I’d love to make one of those in a larger cuddle-size.

Very pretty though I’m not really thinking about fall in 105 degree weather!
I have some Gobble Gobble by Sandy Gervais somewhere that maybe I could pull out. It has some of the same color schemes.
