Dishes Make Me Happy

005

I have been buying dishes.  I do not know what it is about china, but it makes me so happy to acquire it.  I have seen these dishes in a couple of places–Susan of Blackberry Creek has at least one, and Wspersweetly of Cottages has an entire set that she used for her 4th of July tablescape.

I got a bee in my bonnet to get these dishes and did an exhaustive internet search for them.  Originally they were sold through Neiman Marcus, but of course, not any more.  I finally found them on Replacements.com and took a big deep breath and ordered them, even though they were super pricey.  $30 for a dinner plate, $24 for a salad plate.  A set for 8 would cost $432 for just those two pieces.

I recently discovered Marshall's, when I was out trying to find six sunflower plates.  I scored four of them at my local Marshall's, and when I was up in San Jose on Friday, I determined to check out the six Marshall's stores in that area to see if I could find two more.

Well, you are not going to believe this.  While I was at the first Marshall's store, what do you think I found, staring me in the face?  You guessed it.  The Red Rooster dishes I had just ordered for a gazillion dollars from Replacements.com.

015

The salad plates were $2.99, the dinner plates were $3.99.  And they had these matching mugs for $3.99.

007

How could that be?  Who cares.  All I can say is that I made it my mission to go to four more Marshall's stores in the greater San Jose area until I had my 8 place settings.  $88 for 24 pieces or $432 for 16 pieces?

I had always avoided Marshall's, thinking it was another one of those dreary discount stores.  Well, it is, but who knew about the dishes thing?  Evidently from time to time they get in really good quality bone china that retails for much much more elsewhere.  It may be overstock, it may be slightly imperfect, but my gosh, if you like to change out the look of your table for the holiday or the season, it is so worth it to pop in and see what they have!

Oh, and I found my two additional sunflower plates, plus this cute rooster platter and gold serving dish.  The cost of the rooster platter?  $2.99 of course.  I plan to use it for serving cheeses, with the crackers in the gold dish next to it.

006

I may have to go back for more of those rooster platters.  Wouldn't this be a cute look for a summer dinner outside on the patio?  Help.  Someone stop me.

  1. I am a ardent Marshall’s shopper – probably go in there once a week just to see what they have. I’ve gotten some wonderful deals in there – all the way from clothes (which I buy very few of) to shoes, to dishes to decorations. Definitely not a place to miss.

  3. I love Marshall’s. I have found some awesome things there. It is worth checking their stock, even in linens. Enjoy your plates. A girl can never have too much china.

  7. TJ Maxx can be another source for dishes – I got several le creuset baking dishes there for a song. Isn’t it great to get such a good deal?

  11. What a lucky find on your rooster dishes. I am a chicken collector (not real ones) so these would be a wonderful thing for me to have. I just don’t have room for any more dishes.

  13. I saw the rooster dinnerware at Home Goods in Denver when I was there in November. I wasn’t traveling by car, I was going home by train, or I would have bought them!

  15. I hate going to marshall! I can’t stand the mess and I can never find a thing. My sister walks into that store and finds treasures! How can that be? She says it’s because she goes often and knows what to look for. How can I go there often when I hate going there? Lol! I’m destined to miss out on the goodies! I love the plates. I am so not into that style but those are just beautiful. I love the check on the dinner plate. It makes it look so country! Fabulous find!

  19. I collect a pattern that was my mother’s, called Blue Danube, or sometimes called Blue Onion. Marshalls is a GREAT place to find them every once in a while, as is Home Goods. I also like to look for inexpensive, funky plates that I can use to package up a special gift of food, or unusual mugs that can be filled with something meaningful (yet inexpensive) for a quicky gift. How about a really cute coffee mug ($3.99) with a few nice herbal tea bags and a couple of fat quarters rolled up inside?
Both of those stores have super decorative containers too, like baskets and boxes, that store fabric and jazz up your sewing space. AND a super place to find little kitchen gadgets for yourself or for wedding showers.

  21. Oh, dearie me! I LOVE dishes, too, and will have to check out Marshall’s. I have so many sets and partial sets that I should hang my head to consider getting more, but, …..!
    Let me think.
For Christmas, Spode Christmas Tree with the green border
Good china (I married in 1972 and this was important then): Royal Doulton: Sherbrooke
    Mom’s good china: Haviland Rosalinde
    Summer: Pfaltzgraff Ocean Breeze
Winter: Enoch Wedgwood: Asiatic Pheasants (multi) and Kent – they’re nearly the same
    Spring: Blue Willow
and I could go on a bit!
Need a gift for an older relative? We gave AMIL 12 place settings of everyday china when she was 75 because they were using odds and ends from all the decades before. She was totally delighted with the blue and white floral dishes. Another less pricey idea is a new address book since the old one is likely to be in tatters.
    Okay, book written! The End
    Hugs!

  27. I love dishes too and we have two sets of everyday dishes, plus my MIL’s fine china and my grandmother’s Franciscan Red Apple (which I am storing at my mom’s!) My SIL has about 8 sets of dishes…
Being a collector is hard, isn’t it, LOL?

  31. When I was in Italy I saw some dishes I was totally in love with. Couldn’t afford them and long way to bring back. Imagine my delight in finding them here in Marshalls and TJ Maxx. That was 8 years ago, and I have managed to build a nice set along with tons of serving pieces to match.

  37. Hi Nicole, I just had to tell you that I think the dishes are lovely…BUT…I have been reading your blog for a long time. Yours was actually the very first quilt blog I ever discovered and I was hooked. Quilts, quilts and more quilts plus the occasional beautiful picture of flowers blooming in your yard, those entertainig pups and the stories you told, just kept me coming back. Lately though, it just seems to be all about decorating for every season and occasion, (expensively)…something I just can’t do. Bye the way, I don’t find discount stores the least bit dreary, I’m always up for a good deal. Point is, I’m reading less and less about quilting and I’m really missing it. Thanks for all the great quilting posts and fun dog stories. See Ya!

  39. I could have told you that Replacements is a big rip off – you would have done better on ebay! But good for you with your Marshall’s score!

  43. No Marshals around here, that MAY be a good thing, I do love china. I hope you score more of those rooster platters, I LOVE the red background for the sunflower plates, they make a perfect couple.
I can’t start my day until I’ve read your blog, I’m always eager to read another chapter in your life, whatever the topic!

  45. Marshall’s can be awesome. It can also be a dreary discount store where too much of the stuff is over-stock from low-end retailers, manufacturers. But… I’ve also gotten some terrific buys, including a fabulous Cole Haan handbag there at about 90% of the original “retail cost”.
As you’ve probably already learned, you can go to a dozen stores and find only one thing… but if you love it and it’s what you really want… then it’s all good. And you can go in and not find anything… but sometimes that’s fun too. It’s all about the hunt and the unexpected find. 🙂
    Enjoy the beautiful dishes. 🙂

  47. Those discount places make me crazy. I know lots of people that find cool stuff there, but I’m never one of them! Glad you were able to find those dishes at such a bargain price! Had you already clicked “buy” at replacements.com before you found these?

  51. I hit every Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, and Home Goods in Birmingham (I think). I found four salad plates and two mugs in the Queen’s cranberry roosters. Now I just need two more mugs and three big plates and I can set a table. Replacements is just too expensive.
