Thanks for all your support yesterday in regard to my very unsatisfactory experience with Sarah's Fabrics in Lawrence, Kansas. I am happy to say that when I called the shop to give my credit card for the refund, a young woman (who I am sure had been warned about what a b—h I was) was very helpful. This would be the young woman the boss tried to blame for not contacting me in regard to the refund the boss had meant to mail out but didn't get around to. I got a refund for the 2 3/4 yards fabric they over-charged me for, as well as about half the shipping fee. What an unnecessary struggle that whole scene was.
Woo hoo! Look what is finished! My "State Fair" Schnibble! The fabric I used is Odyssea by MoMo for Moda, with some Wonderland (also by MoMo) thrown in. I seem to be in a nautical frame of mind lately, as these prints have a fishy vibe to them (as does my other favorite fabric, Neptune). Love the bright colors and the crisp look of the white background. When I need to use a white, I always use Kona Snow. I buy it by the bolt so it is always on hand.
Hold on to your seats friends, I am going to try to quilt this myself. I picked up a new machine quilting book by Mary Mashuta, whose thrust seems to be straight line quilting using your walking foot and feed dogs up. Foolproof Machine Quilting is the title. With some luck, and the right thread, and Sharp Microtex needles I ought to be able to handle this. Ya think?
Hey, guess who left me a comment on my Neptune post? The designer of the fabric collection, Tula Pink, herself! She has a website/blog and I highly recommend that you check her out. Did I mention she is a shoe addict? Mmm, hmm, that's right. A kindred spirit. Please visit her post on the shoes she made her mom . You will thank me for it, I promise.
Her fabric designs are outstanding and her sense of humor is wonderful. And her color combinations are sensational. I am definitely late to the party on collecting her fabrics (aside from Neptune) , but won't let her next group get away from me!

I realize this is one day late – my comment is about the shabby service you received from the online shop.
I have to give kudos to a shop where I had a positive experience – “Seams To Be” in Plattsmouth, Ne. I was looking for the perfect fabric for a backing for a rather large quilt, and needed a minimum of 8 yards. I found something I loved, shop clerk measured it out, and it only was 6 1/2 yd. on the bolt. I picked a second choice, she cut it and I went on my way. Got home, started to lay it out to cut it for the backing, and it measured – 6 1/2 yd! Right away I phoned her, she checked her records, and yes, I was charged for 8 yd. Without a question, she offered to send me what I lacked, and – no postage charge. She only had my word for it that it was 6 1/2, not 8 yd. Love that shop!

I took a class with Mary Mashuta on her walking foot technique. It opens up a whole world of possibilities! And it’s not just straight line quilting either. She has a very nify method for using freezer paper to create iron-on templates that use gentle curves. I’ve done a cable + diamond border using her method & it is very cool. You can also create flower-like designs for the center of the blocks. Have fun!!

This quilt has great visual impact. What a cute pattern. I guess some day I need to join the Schnibbles group. Good luck with machine quilting, practice first and then be brave!!!

I have Mary’s book also…love it! Although, admittedly haven’t done any quilting with her techniques yet. Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Lovely quilt Nicole! I’m sure you’ll manage to quilt it yourself without too much bother as it isn’t huge. I was always terrified of machine quilting and then over the New Year I just decided that it couldn’t be rocket science and that I just had to be brave – and you know, it went like a dream! I think it’s important to baste well, but otherwise, go for it!!!
Glad you got satisfaction from the shop in the end – and I’m glad you named names. That’s the only way people learn. 🙂
You still shouldn’t have had to go through that though!

I have LOVED Foolproof Machine Quilting. I picked it up mostly because I enjoy using my walking foot for machine quilting. I am no pro, but I did my first two Schnibbles using her book as a guide.
I even wrote about it when I quilted Winter White.

Hi Nicole!
I am happy to see that Tula Pink commented on your beautiful quilt. I actually tweeted (!) about your post and there are tons of people on Twitter who are Tula Pink crazy, so it may have sent some traffic (including Tula herself!) your way. Hope you don’t mind!
Also, I love seeing your Schnibbles quilt. I have been working quite a bit lately with Odyssea and it has really grown on me. I really want to make the State Fair quilt this month for the Year of Schnibbles project but seem to be running out of time …
Hope all is well!

Both quilts are as cute as can be. I made some boat bags with Neptune and everyone loved them. Wish I had more….
Looking forward to your experience with machine quilting. I have been tempted a few times to give it a whirl. I have some of the books.

I’m sure you can have a lot of fun quilting this little project. It looks so bright and fresh, and FLAT. Your sharpened stunt sewing skills are your best friend when you are ready to quilt!

Congratulations, not only on a finish, and a great finish, but for getting it done well in time of Sinta’s and Sherri’s parade!! I like how each block is totally scrappy, not semi scrappy, like the picture on the pattern.
That Foolproof Machine Quilting is new to me. I took a quilting class with Sue Nickels..it was enough to scare me away from quilting with my Bernina for life! I hope you enjoy trying something new!

I do almost all my own machine quilting on my regular old Bernina. I’ve even done king size quilts on it. Walking foot, free motion, you name it. My favorite machine quilting guru, bar none, is Maurine Noble. She has a book Machine Quilting Made Easy (here’s the link to it at Amazon). It’s fabulous.

Gosh Nicole, when I saw the first block you assembled for this Schnibbles pattern I thought, “not my favorite fabric.” Now that it is all assembled, I love it! I wish I had your talent for knowing how well fabrics will work together. Fantastic job!!! I pledge that I will take a chance and think outside my comfort zone on my next project. Thanks for the inspiration.

Very pretty and different from the ones you have been doing. Let us know what you think of the book. I do my own quilting, but could use some pointers on improving what I feel able to do.

The top looks great – I love Kona Snow too – just makes all those colors look so bright. Good luck on the quilting – I recommend Aurifil or Superior Thread and you really can’t go wrong! Love quilting with the feed dogs up!

I’m a beginner quilter and determined to do my own machine quilting. Mary Mashuta’s book is wonderful..gave me confidence to use her techniques and I’ve successfully quilted several quilts, both large and small.
