Things Have Never Been This Clean

001

The trucks are just driving up.  They get an early start, these cabinet refinishers.  Here they come, smiling  men wearing painting clothes and smelling like tooth paste.   I am barely out of my jammies and smell like coffee.  Oh, and did I tell you that due to the stress of resigning from my job, I have sprouted the Mount Whitney of the cold sore world?  Why bother with make up when everyone's eye goes right to that thing on my lip?  If they gave out prizes for these things, I would win for sure.

Anyway, my kitchen and bathroom have never looked so cleaned up.  Well, maybe for a minute on moving day seven years ago.  That sure didn't last.  I tell you, it is a lot of work emptying drawers and scrubbing down grungy cabinets.  I don't want to do that again any time soon.

002
I like the cleared off look, but it is rather sterile, isn't it?  If someone came in and dared to lay down their car keys on those clean counters, I would have to pitch a fit.

We got an estimate to have our hardwood floors replaced today.  I practically choked when I saw it.  The materials cost a gazillion dollars, which we already knew, but in addition, the installer wants $4800 just to put down the new stuff.  We may have to rethink that plan.

Here is something quilty!  I just picked up Flowers for Clara this week, and do I ever love it.

002

That alone may sell the house if I have it on my bed!  Here is a close up of Debbie's amazing quilting.  Feathers.  Perfect for this quilt.

I am home all day today, and can be found in my sewing room, working on a project for She Who Comes Up With Many Amazing Quilting Ideas.  Have a wonderful day Friends!  And thanks to all of your for your kind good wishes on my moving adventure.

  1. I probably missed a pertinent post along the way – why do you need to replace your hardwood floors, as opposed to refinishing and/or repairing?
(Sorry, I’ll try to pay better attention this time.)

  3. Lovely quilt, beautiful kitchen, and SO sorry about the cold sore. I get them, too, and I know how annoying and painful and embarrassing they are. You probably wouldn’t win first prize, though. I once had FIVE on my bottom lip, all at once. Two inside, three outside. I couldn’t talk, and THAT is a problem. Do you use Abreva? I’ve found that it can help, if applied early and often. So does an ice cube.

  5. Cabinets look wonderful, I need to do that to mine LOL!! Flowers for Clara is so pretty, is that a published pattern or did you make it up? The feathers are perfect.

  7. Like Maria, I think I missed why you would replace the HW floors instead of refinishing? I love your kitchen! I would buy your house just for the kitchen, if you threw in the quilt I wouldn’t haggle on closing costs. I recently saw a similar quilt on Bonnie Blue quilts website but I was not thrilled with the floral border. I love what you did with the applique. It just finishes it off in a softer tone. The quilting just accentuates the beauty in the piece.

  9. HATE cold sores. Hate them. They hurt, they crack as they heal so that you can’t smile, and they make your lip feel like it has a huge target on it. Then there was the time I though exposing it to the sun would help heal it. MAJOR mistake. Bloomed like grandma’s flower garden into something beyond hideous.
I am very envious of your clean kitchen.

  11. Cold sores are horrible! I’m just healing up from a group of them. Abreva and peroxide help lessen the duration — but nothing seems to stop the cracking as they heal. Hope yours goes away fast!

  15. I can’t wait to see how the cabinets turn out. They look fine now, though. I would like to paint my off-white. I am tired of 23 year old light oak. Ugh! Light oak that is dirty! Ugh, ugh!
My sister just had hardwood put in her large great room. She got one estimate that made us all laugh! Then she went to Modesto to Flooring Liquidators. Half the price. They are gorgeous and I’m so jealous!! Do they have that store in your area?
Beautiful quilt. You are going to have so much fun retired and quilting!!!

  17. I hope it is not really necessary to do the hardwood in order to sell! That’s a ton of money to not get to enjoy….Meanwhile, can’t wait to see pics of the newly refinished cabinets. Going darker?
The quilt is gorgeous. Definitely. I hope you’re keeping it!

  19. Well, I think that made up my mind about having all my carpets replaced with hardwood. I hate carpet. ANd Vann would never had anything but. Maybe I could do a couple of rooms at a time. Hmmmm.

  21. Boy it’s a good thing you didn’t buy a long arm machine since you’re moving. Congrats on moving closer to your child … our DD#1 lives behind us or is it we live behind them. Anyway our yards connect. I see my 3 GC or talk to them everyday. A new GC will appear this July way over in Cincinnati. We’ll be on the road more now. We couldn’t be happier.
Yikes replace the hardwood …. maybe you could just refinish. Good luck.

  23. Oh Nicole, your Flowers for Clara is just wonderful. So warm and inviting. You be careful…..people will want to know if it comes with the sale of the house.
Yes, your house does look clean….but isn’t it a boring look? Just like you said, very sterile. Like no one fun and exciting lives there. You’re definatey fun and exciting. All the stuff on the counters just makes it look lived in, which is way more exciting than clean countertops.

  25. Well, the kitchen already looks great from here. Somebody’s going to love it!
Flowers for Clara however looks even more beautiful! What a cozy feel that would give a room. Nice applique and feathers on it.

  27. For cold sores you might want to contact your dermatologist (or other doctor) and get a prescription for Valtrex. When you feel a cold sore coming on you take 2 pills in the morning and 2 at night for 1 day and it stops the cold sore dead in it tracks. You may have a small spot to heal up but it never erupts. I use Blistex to dry it out.
If your floors are any kind of real wood (not Pergo) they should be able to refinish them. I just had my new-to-me old house done for $4600 – 2 living rooms, dining, 3 bedrooms and halls. I would get other estimates about what could be done for them.
    Love that quilt!

  31. I’ve seen your floors – they don’t need replacing or refinishing. Spend that money on a trip to Ireland or Italy instead.

  33. Oh, sorry about the blister…I have not had one for a long time, so I bet I am due. Looks great all clean, mine never stays for long! Gorgeous quilt and feathers.

  35. Can’t wait to see your kitchen and bathroom cabinets when they are finished. I have a similar post almost ready to go from a recent day when some finish work was done on my counters and backsplash. Everything piled on the dining room table sure makes the kitchen clean!

  37. Flowers for Clara would definitely sell the house…but they’d probably expect you to leave it with the house. LOL!

  41. Flowers for Clara is amazing!! It’s hard to beat the feeling of satisfaction you get when picking up a quilt from the quilter. I love it!! I missed that tiny containment border the first go around, it really does its job well!
Good Luck with the home improvements, the stress that accompanies such projects, and the cold sore. At least you’re no longer working at the clothing store, where you have to try and hide your cold sore from the public at large.

  43. Hi Nicole,
Your Flowers for Clara is gorgeous as are many of your quilts. Are you and Carrie joined at the hip YET??
Good luck on you house remod and then moving closer to your children. You will love being close just like you seem to be close to your siblings. My grown sons – one is an attorney, one is a computer engineer in charge of lots. We nearly have to make an appointment three weeks out to get together since we live on the prairie and they live in Dallas. If I could give up the home we have cherished, decorated and loved for 25 years, including my gorgeous blue and white quilt-sewing room (paperd from Victoria magazine’s wallpaper s when they were available once upon a time) maybe we could move on. (Your quilt header quilt would be gorgeous in my sewing room.)
A point of this comment is to ask about your favorite way to do 1/2 square triangles especially the volume needed for a Carrie Nelson quilt. I love her quilts but any quilt is intimidating when the directions say “make 426 half-square triangles.” I want to skip over those quilts and move on to something do-able. Refer me back to a previous post if needed as I do believe you discussed this before, but I need an update after seeeing Clara. Wonderful quilt.
    Best wishes,
    Stephani
