The Love Quilt

I realize that it is St. Patrick's Day, not St. Valentine's Day, but I think you will see that this post is appropriate anyway!

You see, my son has fallen in love with an Irish girl from Galway.  And he asked me to make her a quilt to express his regard for her.  She is Irish through and through, but her favorite color is red.

This is the quilt my son plans to give his sweet Irish girl friend. I picked it up from the quilters this past week, and am very pleased with how it turned out.  The quilt has a very romantic feel to it, I think.  Both the traditional design and the large toile print put me in mind of other more romantic and slower paced times.  The quilting design is a large feathered pattern that I think suits the old fashioned charm of the quilt.

Here is a picture of the entire quilt.  Remember this was the one where I had to re-do the border because it was wavy?  I won't be making that mistake again anytime soon.  I had to take all the borders off, cut them down, and re-attach them.  I think the results were worth it though.

I have to sew on the binding this week, and then the quilt will fly off to Ireland on March 23, when my son goes to visit his girl.  We like her so much, and I don't think Ahren has ever been so happy in his life.  Ah, sweet love.

Here is one final touch, that seemed just right to me.  The two of them met as pen pals over the Internet, and have corresponded for several years before meeting face to face this past December.  By now, they have written volumes to each other.  I thought this fabric was the perfect choice for the backing:

  25. Absolutely lovely quilt, and lovelier story! It was meant to be, this quilt waiting to be quilted in your closet and now going to Ireland!
Dr Phil once said on his show that as a parent you don’t know true happiness until your child finds true love…..I thought, what a load of crap, I could not be prouder of my independent beautiful daughter who does not need a man to define her…..then she fell in love, and she glowed, and it melted my heart, and I had to admit that Dr Phil was right, which killed me, but I was still happy for my daughter.

  39. I hope the love is reciprocated, for your dear son’s sake! It is a wonderful thing, having him choose a quilt you made, to give to the lovely girl of his dreams. How special you made it to go along with the romance of how they met.

  43. what a treasure – and I love the story behind it that your son and her met on line and have known each other so long… Sounds like the start to a good romantic movie 😉
Everything about the quilt is perfect way to express his feelings towards her… and I’m curious to know if you had your longarm quilter quilt in the words – “will you marry me” in one of the borders 😉 Now that would be super awesome!
Have you and your husband met her before?
