76 Geese A’Laying

I lied yesterday when I said I had a hundred flying geese to make.  More like 76, it turns out.  And they are big devils, 3 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches.  I have all my units cut out and organized and ready to go.

I know I should get going on them, and sew into the night, as some of my friends are able to do.  The thing is, I am a morning person.  Well, more of a Middle Of The Day Person.  I like to get going on things around 9:30 AM and knock off for the day around 5:30.  Getting up too early isn't an option I prefer, and sewing late into the evening just isn't happening.

Minor rant below.  If rants annoy you, do not read any further.

Besides, you will never guess what has happened to me.  I woke up Friday morning with my left eye swollen shut.  Itchy????  Oh, man.  It was complete torture not to rub my eye.  I thought, "This will go away".  But Saturday and Sunday morning when I woke up it was even more swollen and itchier.  (Is itchier a word?)  So, I took myself to Urgent Care to see what was up.  Evidently I am a medical mystery.  Nothing like this has ever been seen before, except when my nearly twin sister Andrea went to the doctor with exactly the same symptoms two months ago.

The doctor saw me.  She was perplexed.  She called in her colleague.  Who was also perplexed.  You see, my eye didn't hurt, which would be a clear symptom of infection.  It was just super swollen and itchy.  Sign of some kind of allergic reaction.  To be on the safe side, she prescribed antihistamine eye drops and an antibiotic.  It could have been an infection, they just weren't sure.  And an eye infection is very serious business.  Went to the pharmacy.  Got the eye drops.  Didn't get the antibiotic.  Why?  Well, because the doctor prescribed a dose that was higher than typical for the use of the medication.  Insurance lackeys got involved.  Would not approve the prescription.  Here I am, with an eye that could be infected, millimeters away from my brain, and I can't get my medicine because the insurance drones are second guessing the dose my doctor prescribed for my unique symptoms.

I tell you, this has been so frustrating.  Something called a Prior Authorization has to be put through by the doctor, subject to approval by the person supervising the insurance drones.  How long will this take?  Dunno.  Nobody seems to care.

So, here I am, Miss Reliable, who goes to work when any sane person would stay home.  Trying to drive looking through one good eye and one eye that is just open the tiniest little slit.  I have one of those jobs (Office Manager) where I have to be there rain or shine, sick or healthy.  If I try to call in sick?  Major panic.  "Who will do…"  "What if….?"  And this time, when I tried to stay home, my boss actually said grudgingly, "Well, Nicole, you are going to have to really hit it when you get back to the office, in order to get caught up".  Talk about a guilt trip.

Rant over.

I wish I could stay home.  I want to make flying geese with my special Fit To Be Geese ruler by Monique at Open Gate Quilts.  The best, most accurate method ever.  Perfect geese every time.

  1. Did you get all that fabric cut up in one day, and with only one good eye?? Now the doctor has gone to school for how many years and the “insurance drone” for how many years and who’s making the decision about whether or not you should get this medication? – something is not right here. I love the green fabric on the left side, 2nd from the top with what looks like red paisleys – what is that fabric line? This quilt is going to be stunning!!

  3. possible??? My eyes get a little red when I have cut tons of fabric or worked with batting a lot. Wonder if there’s something in fabric finishes that is an irritant. Can I work for you today? Minnesota winter is long and I am tired of staying home.

  5. You deserve to rant. Good luck with that eye. I have episodes with mine over unknown irritants. May not be what you have but it’s not fun. My DIL has a job like yours. Not fun either. Sorry about the lack of concern for YOU. Take care!

  7. Hi Nicole, I have had to do a lot of research about allergens because of my daughter (she is highly allergic to perfume and scented items.) Anyhow I ran across this-
” Eyelid dermatitis is often traced to nail polish, which can cause an allergic reaction if nails touch the eye area before the polish dries completely, a two-hour process.”
Maybe? I hope it clears up soon. You could put a pirate patch over your eye and growl at everyone at the office.

  9. Aw. That is crappy. You deserve, and in some ways, have to rant about things like that. A serious issue that people simply don’t want to think about.
I hope you get better soon, and you should probably hold off on any sewing, and especially any cutting, until your eye clears up, you vision, depth perception etc is off with only one good eye.

  11. Oh wow Nicole, I am surprised the walk in did not suggest you go to an eye specialist. Hope you are feeling better after using the drops. And I LOVE my Fit to be Geese ruler. You directed me to use it when I was working on my Schnibbles, and it really is great! Thanks.

  13. I like Ingrid’s suggestion – wear a patch and growl at everyone like a pirate. I can’t believe they make you come to work when you are sick. And insurance companies? Don’t get me started….

  15. HOly crap that eye thing sounds awful. Hope you’re doing better. And what’s up with the insurance thing. Good grief.

  17. I hope you get better … I like the suggestion that you wear a patch and growl at everyone (especially the boss)! Love the colors and fabric. I have a flying geese ruler from Eleanor Burns that I haven’t tried…wondering if this one is better? Thanks for sharing.

  19. I may know what’s wrong with your eye! My daughter for a period of 6 months would wake up in the morning and one eye or the other would be swollen shut. The Dr. didn’t know what the problem was and would prescribe antihistamines and antibiotics to no avail. At about the time she was about to rip here eyes out, she had to have 2 root canals in her upper teeth and the periodontist was the one who said you can get a pretty good case of hives with eyes swollen shut when you have an undiagnosed infection like in tooth. He said the root canal was “cooking” for a bit and finally started hurting her. He did the root canals, put her on a month long dose of antibiotics and she has not had the problem since. If it keeps happening you might want to get an x-ray of your teeth.

  21. So sorry to hear what your boss says to you if you call in sick. I’m so lucky, here we send people home if they are sneezing and coughing, we don’t want any more than one person to be down sick. As for your quilt, it’s looking better and better. I love your fabrics on this one!

  23. I hope your eye is better soon. What a nightmare! And I have one of those jobs too – I wear so many hats, they panic when I’m not here. Congrats on getting all your geese cut out – can’t wait to see them flying!

  25. Your pieces look so pretty all laid out like that!
I sure hope your eye gets better quick – it’s scarey when you don’t know what is causing it.
