Buffy the Backside Slayer

015

Hello.  Welcome to my bathroom.  I just got a new beauty product I must share with you.

In downtown Carmel, there is a beauty boutique (selling mainly bath products) called Lush.  (You don't have to actually go there, there is a website).   Lush has made a name for itself as a company that only uses fresh organic ingredients, no animal testing, no preservatives, and  no packaging (!!!).  Everything is hand made.  I am all for protecting the planet and so on, but when it comes to my beauty products I am ashamed to say that might not be my number one priority.  But I am up for it, truly.

Being of a certain age, and also having dry skin, I am always on the lookout for moisturizing and exfoliating products.  Dry skin needs to be exfoliated often (dead cells removed), but there is one down side to most products that serve this purpose:  the insane itching that follows their use.  Believe me, I have tried just about everything.  Ten minutes out of the shower and I am doing the dance of the whirling dervish, trying not to scratch myself all over to relieve the itching.

Recently, this product with the crazy name "Buffy, the Backside Slayer" came to my attention.  It completely resembles a big bar of soap.  But it isn't.  It contains Fair Trade cocoa butter, shea butter, ground almonds, ground rice, and natural lavender and lemon oils.  Everything organic, Earth friendly, and natural.

Here is how you use it:  Get into the shower, lather up and wash with your usual soap or shower gel.  Shave your legs, wash your hair, whatever you do in the shower.  Then, turn off the water.  Grab the Buffy bar and rub it all over your arms, legs, bottom, chest, everywhere (except your face and hair).  Don't grind it in real hard, as it is rather abrasive.  Once you are coated in the Buffy wonderfulness, put the bar down and massage the little grits and oils into your skin.  Once you don't feel the gritty bits anymore, turn the shower back on and rinse off well.

This is what it does:  if you have little red bumps on your arms and thighs they will be gone after several applications.  If you have scaly elbows, poof, it takes care of those too.  Ingrown hairs from shaving?  No problem, they go away too.  Dry skin?  Oh my gosh, you will not even need to use lotion after your shower, your skin will be so smooth and moisturized.  And your bottom?  Soft as a baby's.  Do not forget your bottom.

If you have oily skin, this may not be for you.  If you wouldn't spend $21 on a bar of exfoliating wonderfulness, it may not be for you.  Some people don't care for the smell much (too herbal), but I sure didn't have any objection.  You also don't want to leave it in the shower (or it will melt away too fast), but take it out after each use and dry it off.  If you like to self tan in the summer, this is the product for you.

Seriously, I am sold on this thing.  It was $21 well spent for me!

  1. Might have to try it out. I oil down with baby oil after each shower, before I dry off. That helps, but I have to admit that since the weather has turned so awfully cold, my legs have begun to itch.

  5. My DH uses a soap from Nubian Heritage that works really well for his skin problems. It’s not sold in stores in our area, but it is sold in northern NJ Target stores. If you ever want to try out another product let me know & I’ll send you a bar. . .it’s not as expensive as the product you found; but we buy it 15 bars at a time for the free shipping.
Will keep this info handy in case DH decides to try out something different.

  9. I like it when someone else is willing to spend the $$ so I don’t have to experiment. It sounds totally intriguing; thank you.

  11. I wonder if this would work for my mom. She itches – like all over all the time. They think it has something to do with her leukemia and immune system. She’s 86 and the poor thing has tried everything. They have her on cortizone and it only works partly and has made her gain weight. I’ll see what they say. Thanks for the heads up.

  15. Dry skin??!! You bet…I live in the desert and work in the operating room (no humidity!). Have been in our local LUSH store right before the holidays (my first visit). The products all have great names and the smells are enticing! I found it all overwhelming and had to have one of the salegirls give me a tour. I found out that many of their soaps don’t lather, but it’s not the lather that makes you clean so you don’t need it (the lather). Their massage bars are not just for massage but have natural oil in them so can be used in lieu of a moisturizer. When I first tried them on my hands (which between handwashing and working with fabric, they could snag many a pair of pantyhose) my hands seemed greasy, but it didn’t last for more than a few minutes. I will head over to LUSH this weekend so I can “slay my backside” with some Buffy.

  17. One reason I love the L’Occitane store’s products is their proportion of Shea butter–it really conquers that beyond dry feeling. Lately my legs have been itching and it isn’t just the 1/4″ stubble I’ve been ignoring…one of these bars sounds perfect for all my parts and appendages. Thanks for the heads up!

  19. Thank you for this post! I have missed Lush ever since I left Sweden for the US. I love some of their bath bombs and the “After 8:30” Mint Chocolate massage bar is to die for.
Thanks to your post and by visiting their website I just found out that they have a store location in Annapolis mall so guess where I’m going tomorrow..? :-)) And I’m definitely going to try Buffy the slayer too.
I always read your blog as I’m a true admirer of handsome Ozzie. :-)) Have a great weekend!

  21. I love Lush’s bubble bars for an occasional splurge, but it sounds like I need to try a Buffy bar for my dry, itchy legs! Thanks for the tip.
