Rejoining the Living

Hey, I feel pretty good this morning!   Head is clearer, ears not ringing, eyes not watering too much, nose not completely stuffed up.  Let the vacation begin!  Boy, do I have a lot of sewing projects I would like to work on.  What?  I have to go back to work today?  No!

Did I tell you that I also broke a tooth somehow during the past week?  Yup.  I did.  Let's hope I got all the bad luck out of the way at the end of 2009 and that 2010 will be hassle free.   By the way, are we going to say "Two thousand ten" or "Twenty ten"?  Have you decided?

My plan to get the Red and White Snowball Challenge quilt completely finished was foiled.  I did however, finish all the red blocks, make all the light units, and press them.  Pressing all these units took me forever, especially since I could barely stand up.

I will say that paying attention to the pressing directions of this quilt pattern is important.

001

So, this is the extent of my effort.  With luck, I will finish the light blocks this week and then start making rows of blocks!

So, how did the rest of you who are farther along than I am proceed with that?  Did you put everything up on a design wall, or did you let yourself be totally random and just plunge into connecting the blocks into rows?

Sophie is plaguing me to take her for her morning walk, so off I go to start my week!  Hope it is a good one for all of you!

  1. I’m back to work today also…darn! But I did work on my blocks for a while this morning:) Progress! I’m all for the twenty ten way of saying the year. It would have been nineteen ten a hundred years ago, eighteen ten etc. Seems like the way you should say it.

  3. Happy to hear you are feeling better. I am struggling with a cold and for some reason it seems to want to revisit me before leaving all together. Hopefully yours will stay away for good! I thought about the whole 2010 naming issue and realized that last century we would say nineteen + the number (ie nineteen-eighty, nineteen-ninetynine, etc) so I’m sticking with twenty ten. Plus my nephew keeps correcting everyone that calls it by any other name. LOL!

  5. I don’t know what I’m saying yet, but I saw a commercial that calls it “2K10″ – you’d say ” Two, kay, ten.” Mmmm, I doubt I go with that one. Probably Two thousand ten will be my default.
Glad you are feeling better, and I love the red-white snowball quilt. I have gone so far as to put this on my New Year’s Resolution list, and I bought the book with the pattern about a month ago. You have inspired me!

  7. I’m glad you are feeling better. Too bad all your vacation time is over.
I have not given any thought to how I will say 2010…hmmm I will have to think on it.
    Take care!

  9. I’m so glad to hear that you’re feeling better! This bug. . . it likes to hang around – doesn’t it?!
I’m calling it ‘twenty-ten’. . . simply because that’s how we refer to the past decades. . . (nineteen-ten – not nineteen-hundred & ten). . . Isn’t it so funny that it has become such a topic of interest? I think because we haven’t yet used the term “twenty-….” it’s got so many in a tizzy! But – it keeps things interesting & keeps us all talking. .. (!) :o)
Hope your first week of 2010 (that would be twenty-ten!) continues to see you feeling better & better!

  11. Hi Nicole,
I am sorry to hear you have been so sick!! My son was sick before Christmas and kept going to work 🙁 . Finally 2 weeks later his cough was so bad he went in to the Dr. to be checked. They did a swab and told him he had H1N1 with bronchitis as a secondary infection. All that to say—take care of yourself! Don’t put off going in if you need to be checked out.
Hope you get well very soon!!

  13. Hopefully you continue to get better. I’m going with Twenty-Ten, but don’t really care either way. Your week went how this one, starting yesterday, has been going for me. Hope your 2010 is better then 2009, however you say it!

  17. Before I retired I hated getting sick on vacation and then feeling fine the day I had to go back. So not fair! I managed to get some really good progess on my two projects I need done by the first of February. One is a gift so I really can’t show it ’till I give it to the recipient. I’m embarrased that it’s a no-brainer pattern, but at least it will be done.

  19. Well, I’m finally getting over the flu also, and boy am I glad. I’ve been hearing alot about twenty ten on TV! I wondered about that too! In the mean time, love your new picture at the top of your blog, sorry, I’ve been gone awhile!! And I can hardly wait to see your snowball quilt!!

  23. Family is now all outta here as of today, so now back to reality after the holidays. Work only a couple of days this week and no quilting backlog, so snowballs are my reality! Can’t wait.
Twenty-ten is less of a mouth full. Someone said you should relate it to the way you would write a check: do you write Two thousand and ten dollars or do you write Two thousand, no hundreds and ten. And then there are the computer configurers and something about bit size and space… Too confusing I say. Whatever works for you is my motto.
Winter greetings and snowballs in red and white! Debra in Ohio

  25. Why is it when we are sick that we can’t ever remember being well? And when we are well, it is hard to remember how bad being sick was. I hope you forget quickly how it is to be sick.
I love all things red, and your snowball quilt is amazing.

  27. How about just “Ten”? You know like before the turn of the century, people would say, “What year did you graduate,” and you would say something like, “Sixty-two.” Did you have to trim your triangle squares? I had to trim every single one of mine. They don’t come out the exact 2 1/2″ or 2″ or whatever it’s supposed to be. The trimming took forever and made my hand and wrist hurt.

  31. I was a 1st Grade teacher and one of my students was practicing telling time on a clock with movable hands. She said, “one-oh-seven, one-oh-eight, one-oh-nine, one-oh-ten…” so I think I’ll go with ‘Two-oh-Ten’ for 2010 because she was so darned cute and serious I’m still laughing about it over 20 years later!!
The horrible cold has hit our house as well as friends the past couple of weeks and it.is.no.fun! Feel better fast and get that tooth fixed! ouch!

  33. I am so happy you’re feeling better, Nicole. No fair! You were truly enduring and going on discipline to get this work done and my hats off to you. You’re the perfect person to comment on my blog post about Discipline and quilting I think. But I fear by the time you’re well enough to contemplate and contribute… uh, it’ll be post and gone. I’ll just know that you represent that and let it rest with that. And YEAH NO WORK YET! Yippie!!!!!!!!
My favorite thing, Nicole – your banner. Love it. The up close work is beautiful! Warmly and with much admiration for your discipline, *karendianne.

  35. Like Susan Ramey Cleveland…I had to trim every single one of my hst’s. Made my left upper arm very very sore. I was very random when I put the blocks together in rows…then I looked at it to make sure that it wasn’t too “heavy” in the darkness of the reds.
I, too, love the new banner. I would like to see the whole quilt. Love the black-n-white checkerboard.

  37. Glad you’re feeling better…and I’m sending good thoughts that all the bad stuff for you stays in 2009 and out of Twenty-ten! Take good care!

  39. Surely you have used up all your annual amount of bad luck! Hope so!
Your red/white project is looking good. I’m watching for the final reveal.
“twenty-ten” rolls off the tongue easier, doesn’t it?

  41. Go totally random, are you kidding me!! I could never leave it to chance when just the perfect combination is out there waiting to be discovered. I drive myself crazy moving blocks up, over, down one. I’ve wondered if in the end it even mattered. Heaven forbid the same fabrics getting within close proximity of each other!!
All kidding aside, I put the blocks on the design wall, try to get the perfect combination, sleep on it, make adjustments, then go to town.
