All I want to do is sew.  I had an entire day all to myself yesterday, and what do you think happened?  Yup, I woke up with a  raging sore throat and a vicious cold.  I spent almost the whole day in my bed.  Sophie didn't get all her required exercise and attention and this morning she is a candidate for doggie ritalin.  I tell you, my luck has been pretty crumby lately.

001
I did get the other two corners of Flowers for Clara appliqued on, and now that quilt is ready to go to the quilters.  This quilt is going to be on my bed as soon as possible!

While I have your attention, I wanted to mention the foot I use when I do applique.  It is a Bernina number 20.  The foot is metal, but is completely open at the "toe".  That way, it is easier to see what I am doing.  Bernina makes a plastic see through version also, but why not just go for the open version?

A couple of people have inquired what sort of sewing machine I use.  The one I use at home is a Bernina Quilter's Edition.  I have had this machine for a lo-o-o-o-o-ong time, and it has served me well.  The only mishap I have had is that for awhile I was carrying it in my car to take to sewing groups, and somehow it got jostled (fell over) and now the light doesn't work.  Those lights never go out, so I know it is just a matter of someone who knows what they are doing jiggling it back into place.  I have it serviced periodically, but it is way over due for a tune up.  It is a real workhorse, and I love it so much that my next machine will also be a Bernina.  (Surely there will be another machine in my future?)  Buy a Bernina, you will have it forever!

Today, since I am feeling more or less human again, and think I can stay awake for at least six hours at a stretch, I plan to get back to work on my Red and White Snowball quilt.  I think tomorrow we should all check in with each other to see what kind of progress is going on!

  1. Oh I love looking at your applique! You’re down right good at that – even under the weather my friend. Darnit on that!!!
Great machines are a real treasure. I have Daphanie’s old PFAFF and it’s just the best thing ever.
“doggie ritalin” – that’s cute (under better circumstances.)
Wellness to you my friend and enjoy working on the snowball quilt. Those sure are fun to see around the Blogosphere!

  5. You poor thing, first your Husband and now you, I wish you all well for the New Year. I’ll also wish you time for quilting, nothing worse then wanting to quilt and having something hold you back. Good Luck, Brandie

  7. Oh no! I hope you are not under the weather long. Take care of yourself and feel better soon. Ringing in the New Year with tissue is no fun. Hope you improve before the weekend.

  9. Glad you are better…had to comment on the Bernina.
I too highly recommend the Bernina sewing machine. In fact I have 2… A 930, which is mechanical that I use for machine quilting; I have had it for 35+ years and have NEVER had a problem with! I also have a 1090 QE that I use for piecing. It is one of the earlier semi-computerized ones; that one I have had for about 20 years! The 930 is perfect for machine quilting as the speed can be set @ 1/2 throttle and the stitches are always perfect. I use the same open toed foot you use for applique with my 1090…isn’t it great! Bernina makes a great product! (No I do not work for them, just am in love with their machines!)

  11. Hope you’re back to normal soon. I have the same Bernina you do & love it! Its got hundreds of hours on it and never lets me down! It finally sprung a spring on the presser foot last year and an hour in the shop (and less than $5 I might add) put her back to normal.

  13. I sew on a Bernina 530 that I’ve had since about 1990 or so. My light goes off sometimes, but if I monkey with the switch a little, I can get it to come back on (sometimes). When I take it in for servicing again, whenever that might be, I’m going to ask them to look at the light problem. If I ever get another machine, it will be a Bernina.
    Hope you’re all better soon.

  15. Sick? That is so NOT fair! Time to sew… the will to sew… but the body and mind won’t cooperate! Glad you’re feeling better!
Bernina! How do I love thee… let me count the ways. I have two. Three, actually, but one is currently residing elsewhere having its demons exorcised. (Story for another day.) Mine are both quite old ~ an 830 and a 930 ~ but I wouldn’t trade either one for anything. Even when I gaze longingly at a new one ~ I love shiny new toys ~ the reality is that I would never, ever part with one of my old workhorses. That would be terrible, terrible karma.
I have an open metal foot for my Bernina. Two, actually. One of them was the old version of the walking foot, right up until Harriet Hargrave ~ THE HH herself! ~ took my Dremel drill and cut out the cross-piece. Visibility is everything!
I’m curious about something though… what kind of thread do you use for your machine applique? Do you use the clear/smoky nylon thread or do you use a fine cotton thread? I know everyone has their preferences and I’m wondering what you think.
    And Happy New Year!

  17. Sorry you’re under the weather – hope you are feeling better and up and quilting soon! I just finished my Snowball challenge this morning and blogged about it. Thanks so much for getting this challenge started and organizing the swap – that was so much fun!

  19. Good borning from me, too. I’ve got the bug, too, including runny eyes. Makes sewing difficult. I’m a Bernie fan as well. My ancient machine is a 930. I’d love to get a new machine with a stitch regulator and a larger arm space for machine quilting but Ol’ Bernie just keeps purring away.

  21. Bummer, Nicole. I had a cold 2 weeks before Christmas and fell behind in all my Christmas sewing. I know you’ll feel better tomorrow.
I hope you answer Carrie’s question here or in another post about what kind of thread you use for applique. I, too, would like to know.

  23. Your applique is perfect- I’m jealous of your skill. I bought my second Bernina on ebay this past summer- a 150. Does your Bernina skip stitches when you do decorative stitching? My friend’s Bernina does it too on the left side of the feather stitch. Any advice? I see you have the bendie light too. How do you like that? Is it worth the money? You have so much to teach me. Thanks.

  25. I’m sorry you are sick. I’ve been trying to come down with something also. I’m been taking Air Borne (I don’t care what the government says) and it’s really helped. I’m not perfect, but better than I would have been.
I have two Berninas. I’ve had my 1090 for a long time and love it. I use it now for traveling with. Hubs got me a new 440 a few years back and that stays home – way too expensive to take out. I just took the 1090 in for a service at Meissner’s in Sacramento. It was way cheaper ($85) than where we bought the 440 in Walnut Creek ($100 – $125). I’m fussy where I take it in for servicing.
    Hope you feel better soon!

  27. Hope you feel better soon! I have an old Bernina 1001 that I love. I dream of having a second machine one day, but I will never part with my first love.

  29. My dear SWEET hubby bought me a Bernina Virtuosa 155 6 years ago as a Christmas present. I had no idea that he would find my dream machine, but he and my son did! I LOVE my Bernina, and yes I think they will last forever. The old Singer Featherweights have almost won that award but these Bernina’s are running right behind.

  31. So sorry to hear you under the weather (where did that expression originate and what does it really mean?) Anyway, hoping you are feeling more like yourself very soon. I believe the key to staying healthy is rest and handwashing (no, I’m not a fanatic, but a nurse, so my hands are usually chapped and rough).
I sew on the exact same Bernina machine but also have a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 that I purchased last year. I really love them both.
Your Flowers for Clara quilt is beautiful. Did you pull fabrics from your stash or use a particular line?
Hope 2010 brings you and your family peace and joy, health and happiness (and a really big tax return!)

  33. I got one of those smackdown colds last month and missed out on sewing time over the Thanksgiving weekend, felt so woozy when upright I couldn’t sit at my machine–so maddening! Hope you’re feeling a lot better (Give Sophie a Benadryl, it might make her drowsy and won’t hurt her)

  35. Oh, Nicole, poor you! It doesn’t sound like it’s been a very good week for you and your family! I hope you feel better soon, but take it easy until you do. Icky stuff is going around these days. BTW, I have a Bernina 150 and it looks much the same as yours. My light has a short and doesn’t always come on, but if I smack the side, it lights up! The only problem I have with the machine is tension in the bobbin thread; if I run the thread through the hole in the bobbin case, it’s okay but I can’t quilt with it on free motion.

  39. Well I’m hoping you started to feel better and enjoyed some time in your sewing room. Between doggy daycare being closed for the holidays and the miserable cold and snow, Cooper’s not been getting near the amount of exercise required for a dog his size and age. It’s been a trial for us both.
I too am a Bernina girl but need to find something for traveling and classes, “Baby” likes to stay home.
Would it have been a bad thing to applique the border before it was attached for Flowers for Clara…..just curious ……

  41. Glad to read you’re feeling a lot better. I’ve had my Bernina 830 since Christmas 1978 and, although I’ve seriously thought about buying a Bernina Aurora 440QE, the thought of retiring my 830 is just too much and I can’t do it. We were living in Holland in 1978 and John used our return airfare money to buy the machine for my Christmas present (our first married Christmas), so it has a lot of sentiment attached to it.
