The First Christmas Quilt of the Season

IMG_3861

If you have been trying to finish up a holiday quilt in time for Christmas, by all means do it!  It is such a joy to surround myself with quilts that express the festivity and happiness I feel at this time of the year. I love the concept of having a Christmas quilt on every bed in the house!

One of the projects I forced myself to finish this last long weekend was to get the binding on my most recent Christmas quilt.  The pattern I used was Opening Day by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company, and the fabric line was Roman Holiday by 3 Sisters for Moda.  Delightful pattern, gorgeous fabric.  A sure fire combination for a dynamite quilt.  Don't you love how the flying geese perfectly surround the rectangular dimensions of my queen size mattress?  Now that is the sign of a pattern designer who is thinking things through.

I don't have any other decorations out yet, but this is my first step towards full blown holiday regalia.  My son has invited his long time pen pal to visit this holiday season.  She is coming all the way from Ireland, and I want to make a good impression.  More on this delicate subject very soon.  I am hoping that next weekend we will get a tree and get started with the usual holiday hoopla.  I will be getting out all the Christmas quilts and making the important decision as to which quilt goes on the bed in the guest room.  I should have a regular Sew and Tell and have you help me decide.  A lot could be riding on this.  Good idea, Nicole.

As I was trying to write this post, my trusty side kick made an appearance.  She sure does know how to get in a person's face.  "Hello Mama!  Let's get going, shall we?  Enough of this computer nonsense.  Let's go for a walk!"  Those would be my knees she is sticking her head between and the lap top is just above her head on the desk.  Ok ok.

  3. I love this quilt! I recently bought the pattern because I fell in love with the stars surrounded by the geese. When I was able to find a way to make those geese without tearing my hair, I jumped at the pattern. It looks more beautiful made, on the bed than in the pattern pic (and that one was pretty awesome). Congrats on that beauty!!

  7. Nicole, your quilt is absolutely perfect on that bed! It is stunning and makes a statement. Those geese on the edges are PERFECT!! Love it. Why didn’t I get some of that fabric line?!!! I have the pattern…do you know if that fabric is still available?
Oh and Sophie….I love when you quote what they may be thinking. I do that with the animals that visit me here too…my family thinks I have lost it!

  9. How funny – I just hung my Opening Day/Roman Holiday quilt in my dining room last night! It’s my only real “Christmas” quilt – I’d best get to making some more, especially since I usually host Christmas dinner!

  11. Beautiful Christmas Quilt! I love the colors and yes it’s awesome that the flying geese fit perfectly on the outer edge of your Queen size mattress. Your little dog is so cute.

  13. That is one beautiful quilt – great pattern and fabric choice. And you are so right about the pattern designer thinking about the placement of the flying geese units around the mattress. I’ve had more than one pattern disappoint me with that lack of detail. Must check out a Miss Rosie pattern soon!

  17. What a beautiful quilt! And I love the size of it too….lots of patterns don’t accomodate a queen-sized bed so beautifully. I will have to try this pattern.
Can’t wait to see your choices for the “sew and tell!”

  19. I think the Roman Holiday quilt is one of my favorites. I wish I wouldn’t have missed out on that fabric. I have the pattern, just no Roman Holiday fabric. I am going to be starting a Xmas quilt called “Remembering Xmas”, a pattern by the Country Sampler but it won’t be done in time for this Xmas. I can’t wait to help you pick your quilts out!

  21. That’s a beautiful pattern and fabric. I just finished a quilt from Peace On Earth which is like Roman Holiday in many ways. Red is so cheery this time of year.

  23. This quilt is spectacular! I love the Roman Holiday line, and I love this pattern. Now I’m sure I want to make it in Christmas fabrics! Oh, and can’t wait to see the rest of your Christmas quilts!

  25. Beautiful and impressive quilt that is.
Ah, a pen-pal from Ireland? This wouldn’t be the friend your son wants to give that one quilt to, would it? If so, put that quilt on the guest bed then give it to when the timing is appropriate. Otherwise, I vote for show-and-tell. I love looking at your quilts.

  27. Fabulous quilt! I got my backing ironed and batting cut so I can get my Christmas quilt layered. You’ve inspired me even more!
