Just Puttering

I don't have anything particularly interesting to share with you all today.  I had the afternoon off, but instead of using it productively, I shopped for the ingredients to make an Indian Chicken Curry, and puttered about in my sewing room.

The mess you see in the picture above is the now borderless red and white quilt that had the rumply borders of shame.  I took the darn things off, and now I am just so not interested in this project.  But, I must fix the problem and get the quilt done.  Someone wants it.  Maybe I will focus on it this Friday when I have the day off.

But I want to start cutting out my red and white fabric for the Red and White Snowball challenge.  The swap fabric is beginning to come in!  I got my first package from Melissa today, and did she ever pick cool fabrics.  Totally what we need.  However, when I got her package, I realized that when I mailed mine out, I neglected to do what Allyson had instructed.  I did not put my strips in a zip lock bag to protect them!  I am so sorry Swap Mates!  If my fabric arrived soggy or otherwise damaged, let me know and I will send more!

I spent a lot of time auditioning light fabrics for my Raise the Roof project.  I am using a fat quarter pack of Vicksburg for the darks, but wanted some golden tans for the lights.

Seeing the fabrics in the photo, I think I am not done auditioning fabrics.  Those lighter ones really don't work for me.  I need more fabrics in that mid range golden tan.

So, it's just Sophers and me, hanging around the house.  I am kinda lonely for my husband, but we just had a nice chat on the phone.  It is his dad's birthday tonight and he and Sara are going to their house with Chinese take out for a nice dinner.  The problem is, the grandparents are going on 90 and eat their dinner at 4:30 in the afternoon, and by the time my husband and daughter get off work, commute home, and pick up the Chinese, it will be going on 7:30.  Hope the old folks can stay up and eat that late!

Sophie and I are getting along all right.  We have a lovely routine, where she gets me up at 6:00 every morning by giving me gentle kisses.  I swear that dog can read a clock.  The switch out of Daylight Savings Time didn't phase her one bit.  We used to get up at 6:00, we still get up at 6:00.  I have one of those digital clocks by the bed and I just know she knows when it is time to rise and shine.

She is such a tease.  Hey!  That is my new knee sock from Talbots!  Let go, you bad dog!

  1. Sounds like a lovely way to spend an afternoon to me. I drool over that Vicksburg fabric each time you post a picture….it’s just lovely, so warm and rich.

  3. I swear my Howie can tell time too…he’s never off by more than a minute…dinner time, he starts staring at Andy at 5:29…dinner’s at 5:30 for them. It truly is amazing. Switching the clocks didn’t phase my guys a bit. Sophie is such a cutie!
You can tell from that look in her eye that she’s always ready for whatever is going to happen. LOL!

  5. No, no! Keep the lighter tans! You’re going to need some “sparkle” in the quilt. Otherwise, it will be too dark looking. Just MHO. :o)

  7. Great fabrics for Raise the Roof. Are you sure you want to trade out the lighter lights? I think they will add to the pattern. Sometimes darker lights and lighter darks make a quilt shine. Hmmm will wait and see what you do with this, I think the grouping will stitch up beautifully in this pattern.

  11. Oh, could you please ask your dog how I get my dogs to read clocks??
My dogs were getting into a habit of waking me up at 4am for breakfast… we’d been working on making that closer to 5 and then this whole time change has ruined any progress.
And they start begging for their 5pm dinner around 3:30. Ugh. I can’t stand an hour and a half of begging. So I’ve been feeding around 4:30 and am trying to make it a little later each couple days… I’m sick of it though.
    It’s a good thing they’re so cute.

  13. Tigger tells time too. Animals are so talented these days. He knows when 5:00 is on the dot. His morning routine cracks me up. He knows they eat breakfast when Keith gets up, whatever time that ends up being. So, to move things along, they just come down and wake Keith up. Sooner he’s up, sooner it’s breakfast time. The awakening starts around 4:00am. Keith usually caves around six.
I sent that same Moda Scroll in my swap packages. Sorry guys, you’re going to get it twice. But it’s a good one. You can use it again and again.
Nicole, press on with the red and white borders. You’ll be happy when it’s finished. So will Ahren.

  17. Borders of Shame, I like that description…even though you are mortified by this boo-boo, you needn’t be; everything is a learning experience, and learning from mistakes means that the lessons learned greater. If we never made mistakes, we’d be awfully limited. (Does that make sense? I’m sure someone famous has made this point, only with more eloquence!!) I love your little Sophie.

  21. Nicole, I enjoyed browsing through your updated quilt album this morning. You have so many beautiful quilts. I wish I had started photographing mine from the beginning, but only started a couple of years ago.

  27. My DD’s cat KNOWS the very second her breathing changes as she first wakes and will go sit at the closed door and cry to be let in!
That auditioning looks wonderful. Very classic color combo that’ll look terrific together!
Good luck on redoing your borders–I’m sure you can get those back on in no time and have it off to the quilter again–and off your to do list!
