The Weekend Is In Sight…

Not a heck of a lot of sewing going on this week.  My hour a day plan has been temporarily derailed, but I plan to get back on schedule this weekend.  My two jobs have eaten into my free time this week, as I have been putting in some extra time at one of them.

I have gone back to the Prairie Paisley challenge, which Lisa and I were working on together.  She finished her quilt top already (check out her post of June 9), and I am only on the third border.  Love this fabric line!  The pattern is from a Quilt Sampler magazine of a year ago.  Check back on Monday–surely I will have more to show.

This is my design dresser in the sewing room.  There is not a bit of wall space to use as a design wall in the room, so I sometimes hang blocks or portions of quilts on the dresser drawers as inspiration.  I have got to figure out a way to hang some sort of flannel or covered wall board on the closet doors.  Every time I tape a big sheet of flannel on those doors, the weight of the blocks causes everything to crumple down into a big heap on the floor when I turn my back.  A project for Some Day.

Hey, I discovered a wonderful blog this week.  I believe I may be the last person on the planet to have heard of The Pioneer Woman .  I can't remember whose blog I was reading, but they mentioned a giveaway the Pioneer Woman was having and how 20,000 people made comments!  I thought, wow, I need to check that one out.  Evidently she was giving away a KitchenAid mixer!  She occasionally holds great giveaways–a pair of expensive cowboy boots, a camera, etc.  I don't even know why she bothers with giveaways, she is so popular.  Her blog is sensational.

The woman who writes the blog, Ree Drummond, is absolutely amazing.  She lives on a cattle ranch out in the middle of the country with her gorgeous cowboy husband (think Paul Newman/Steve McQueen) and her four children, whom she homeschools.  She cooks, she is a cracker jack photographer, and she writes about her life.  I got lost in reading her blog yesterday and before I knew it the day was nearly gone.  You have got to check her out.  Or maybe you already have.  Like I said, I am probably the last person in the world to have discovered her.

  1. I love how this is coming out. I’m like you, I don’t have a dedicated design wall. Well in as much as a dresser or bed can be designated. I’ve tacked up a vinyl tablecloth in the hall and use that. Not optimal by any stretch of the imagination. I put the tacks in right where the wall meets the ceiling so when I take it down it doesn’t show.
You always amaze me with your accomplishments.

  3. Yay, you are human. I was feeling kinda bad that I couldn’t squeeze in that hour a day due to work/family things eating up every minute of the day. I hope to get happy with it this weekend. I never saw the blog you mentioned either so you are possibly the next to last person. Do I dare? If I get lost in her blog I might have less time to sew this weekend. Yikes!

  5. Yep, you may be the last person to discover the Pioneer Woman… her blog is great – she has amazing pictures and great recipes, and she gives away amazing stuff like Kitchenaid mixers and fancy knives very frequently – not like a have a snowball’s chance in you-know-what of winning!

  7. Ditto to Lisa’s comment ~ you really are the LAST person to hear/read about Ree… except that Taryn hadn’t heard about it either. 🙂
And you’re also right that if you start reading her blog, you lose track of time and a dozen hours later ~ having printed out 23 recipes, 6 tutorials, and laughed so hard you thought you were going to hurt yourself ~ you wonder where the day went. But, gosh… even I’m in love with the Marlboro Man’s forearms and his little half-smile. 🙂
And it was that little Bunny Anne who wrote about the 20,000 comments for the three pink Kitchen Aid mixers. There were almost as many comments entering the drawing for the Nikon D90 she’s giving away today.
By the way, “Moor” is awesome! Beyond gorgeous… way better than the original pastel quilt. #(*$#*&!

  11. The first thing I do every morning, cup of coffee in hand, is to read you and the Pioneer Woman. Quilting inspiration and a hearty laugh or two…who can beat that? I love P-Dub…she is amazing. I found her through Heather Mulder Peterson’s blog. She was all wrapped up in Ree’s tale of how she met and married her husband, Marlboro Man, and I decided to check it out. Now THAT is a great read….but you’ll need a few days to get through it. Her recipes are delicious…her humor infectious, and her writing will sweep you away. Glad you found her!
Now…have you considered buying one of those foam sheets they sell at Home Depot to use as a design board? You could just prop it up where you wanted it….and mabe slide it under the bed when you didn’t!

  13. Okay, great post. Love those blocks hanging there on the design dresser. Pretty! I’d like to do that here but I think the cats wouldn’t be kind – you can imagine. I’m off to check out these links you’ve shared.

  15. Nicole, I have just spent the last several hours wrapped up in the Pioneer Woman blog, and 1/2 a tissue box later can’t remember what I was supposed to be doing tonight. I officially was the last person who didn’t know about her site… thanks for sharing!

  17. Great idea to hang the blocks from the dresser drawers. I need that dresser it’s mission style would match perfectly in my bedroom. Have a great weekend, hope you get lots of sewing done.

  19. Be sure to read her epilogue of her courtship and marriage. It will surely take you away into another place, but it is well worth reading. Just don’t plan on reading the whole story at one time. You will be in glued to the computer for hours 🙂 It was because of Ree that I started blogging.

  21. I love your Prairie Paisley quilt. I don’t have a design wall either…hopefully someday! And yes, I love the Pioneer Woman blog…she definitely has a way with words and photos!

  25. I don’t have a design wall either but love your design dresser! Both blocks are gorgeous–and the border coming along so prettily in that fabric line. Very very attractive. I know how jobs can eat into your quilting time–my three pretty much leave me to weekends only 🙂
P.S. I never heard of P.W. until I read it on Bunny Tales earlier this week, like you! I’m afraid to go there yet, I have too many things to do this weekend…

  27. So many great blogs, so little time! I had not heard of The Pioneer Woman either, now I’m hooked! I limit my blog time to 30 minutes in the morning with my coffee. It’s almost a relief when someone doesn’t have a new post so I can move on down my list of favorites.
    As always, thanks for sharing

  29. I also don’t have wall space for a design wall and use a “portable” wall. You need a folding dressmaker cutting board (Wright’s makes one that measures 36 x 60- from Joann’s), a piece of felt or flannel to cover it. I attached my flannel to the board with staples along the edges and it folds up nice and flat. Now you need a pair of the old cheepo white curtain rods that will expand to the 60″ and some bulldog or large binder clips. Open the curtian rods and clip the cutting board to the curtain rod along the long edges and you have a design wall. It isn’t huge, but it sure is handy – and is very easy to store – and inexpensive! Now, off to check out The Pioneer Woman…….

  31. I just discovered the Pioneer Woman blog, too. Your Prairie Paisley top looks great. I stared at the pattern the magazine many times, but knew that I didn’t need to begin another project. It’s one great looking quilt. Enjoy:)

  33. Gorgeous blocks. Yes, Pioneer Woman is great…I love the way she shows everything she does. She is for food blogs what you are for quilting blogs!
