I have been procrastinating a lot lately. There are several potentially really beautiful projects I have started, and then left off working on. What is my problem? I think it is that I have so many unquilted tops sitting around my house that it seems a shame to start another one. There is quite a pile accumulating. How will I ever afford to have them all quilted? At this moment I have a quilt in hock at my favorite quilters, that I can't afford to pay for.
I feel like a cat that should have been spayed. I keep giving birth to these quilt tops I can't take care of.
My thought process has been that I need to work on smaller projects, like table toppers, wall hangings and baby quilts, that I can machine quilt myself. I did that this past weekend, and managed to complete two table runners. Respectable looking even.
I have turned to layer cakes and jelly rolls in order to save the money I would have normally spent on an entire bundle of fabric. That has turned out to be a false economy for sure. Instead of buying the one fabric bundle that I truly LOVE and can't live with out, I will buy three layer cakes of fabric groups that I have varying levels of passion for. Bundle of Love= $100; Three Layer Cakes= $115. See what I mean?
The project I started last Friday you see pictured above. It is a Schnibbles pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company called Four Corners. Fun easy little block. The problem is, I used a layer cake called Portugal that I cannot even believe that I bought, just because I had it laying around and felt I needed to use up. Do I love it? Absolutely not. Does it go with anything in my house? Not at all. Do I feel any amount of love for this fabric collection? Sorry, no.
My time would have been much better used if I had picked up one of the projects I already have going and have posted on lately. Flowers for Clara, Moor is Moor, my purple batik. They are all there, staring at me reproachfully, wondering why they have been abandoned for these quick weekend flings.
You heard it here first—-From now on I am only going to work on projects that excite me. Projects I will see through to the finish. Using fabrics that mean something to me. I have been promiscuous in my fabric buying friends, and I am turning over a new leaf.
So what will I do with the layer cakes and jelly rolls I have sitting around that I know I will never use? I am going to have a little give away! Comment on this post and there will be three winners this Friday. One winner will receive a layer cake, one will receive a jelly roll, and one will receive two charm packs.

Sorry you don’t love that fabric collection. I have less choice at my LQS and opted for that one in charms. At the time, it seemed like a happier “spring” fabric in brighter colours but like you can’t find anywhere it fits in my house. I second your idea of only working on that which inspires and excites us!

Good morning. I am new to quilting and haven’t set up a blog but have been reading yours for about a year now. I enjoy your beautiful work and your life stories! We are so much alike in so many ways. Thank you for writing often and making my day!

Stop buying fabric that you don’t LOVE. Try to trade projects that you don’t want to finish or start. Someone out there will want them and might be able to send you some fabric that you love. Some of the other blog ladies are trading services and fabric …you might have a finished project that one likes and she might be able to quilt your quilt. Just ask and someone will be able to give you what you really love in fabrics … Bonnie in Tx. [email protected]

Oh my goodness, with layer cakes, jelly rolls and charm packs up for grabs, I certainly want to TRY to win!! Of course I never do, but here I am, at it again!! I just love those things. The only thing is, now I will have to buy more yardage if I want to really DO something with them!!! LOL!!!!

Oh I love the quilt you’re showing! I love the collection and can’t wait to make it into something for myself. But you are right – I don’t like brown’s or black and whites and I can hardly stand to sew those because I don’t like them. It IS hard to remember that you are paying so much more a yard for jelly rolls and charm packs. We do pay for that convenience, don’t we?

Life is too short – only buy what you love and work on quilts that make you happy. That’s what I’m trying to do, too. Our batik challenge quilt was the most fun I’ve had in a while. Great idea to send things you’re not super excited about to a new home. You don’t need to include me in your drawing. I already have too much fabric (Lily says….)

Maybe you could trade some of your quilt tops for fabric that you love or longarm quilting. I did a trade with Heather (quiltinlikecrazy) where she had finished a top that I was going to copy and I had a jelly cake that she really liked. Worked out great for both of us.
Please include me in your giveaway…..I just love the precuts.
Thank you,
Cathy

I’m walking in your shoes. I don’t know how many bundles I’ve passed up in favor of the “cheaper” jelly rolls and layer cakes. Sigh. Live and learn.
BTW, I love that quilt you’re showing on this post. My happy colors!

Cathy’s idea of trading for quilting is a good one! And there’s always eBay.
But I still want to win. :o)

That is *too* funny!! I’m the same way. A number of years ago a gal gave me a tote of leftover fabric. I’ve pulled out I don’t know how many pieces that I really don’t like and worked with them and hated every minute, but then can’t bear to use the ones I love. It’s a sickness, I tell you. BTW – I love the fabric in your quilt! And I’d love to be entered in your drawing!! 🙂

I’m sorry you’re not feeling the love, but I love that you’re turning a negative around to a positive by hosting such a great giveaway! One person’s trash is another’s treasure, I suppose. Lemons to lemonade and all that. I’m a big fan of precuts and would love to be entered into your drawing. Thanks so much for the generous giveaway!

I think the top is very pretty! But I do understand not feeling the love. Have you thought of quilting some of your own tops? I’m sure you have. Maybe you could give it another go.

Hi Nicole,
I LOVE Portugal! Email me, maybe we can cut a deal and I could buy the top from you and you can use the $ for something you love.
I am also on a cut back on spending plan so I buy only collections I love. I splurged and bought fat quarter bundles of 2 collections and I felt kind of disappointed in them. But I will use them anyway. Need lots of fabrics for Opening Day!
Anyway, please enter me in the drawing.

Check with a local quilt store or hospital and they will know organizations that are donating quilts – you can donate your top and they will finish it, and it will go to a great cause. Take heart – you can quilt big quilts on a regular sewing machine. I do it all the time. A little more labor, but a lot of money saved.

Hey Nicole! It’s always a bummer to lose your quilting mojo, but no worries – you’ll get it back soon, I have no doubt! I have a similar problem. I buy pre-cuts that I’m lukewarm about when I see them on super-sale. I just can’t pass up a good deal. Right now, I’m trying to turn out a few quilt tops to use up what I have on hand. But I surely don’t mind to replenish the supplies! Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway!

Well, I was going to commment and encourage you about your dillema, but the giveaway is so exciting. What if you do what I think is called an envelope, or is it the pillowcase method? You could then add a hanging sleeve and hang some of them on the wall. What size/type machine do you have? Do you think it could possibly quilt anything bigger than what you have done already? I realize that quilting lines in a straight diagonal are not as interesting as what you have been paying for, but they are easy to do yourself. All you need it some thread and your machine. I have the bottom of the line Singer, and could probably get a queen size quilt in there if I didn’t do anything fancy. My feedogs will not lower, and although I have done some small scale free motion quilting in the past, I’m not really sure how I did it! 😀 The straight line quilting is much simpler. It’s not as fancy, but you would feel better since you would have a finished quilt, that you quilted yourself! Just for the record though, I think that quilt in the picture above is beautiful, and would lend itself well to simple quilting lines. But, that’s just my opinion. I think you are a wonderful quilter, and can’t wait to see more of your work.
Oh, if you could enter me in the giveaway, that would be wonderful!

As a woman who works both outside and inside the home, there is never enough time to quilt…happily, I can and do enjoy quilting and a touch of humor through your blog! Your quilts–even when you do not like the fabric–are lovely and inspiring. Saving on pre-cuts can be an illusion…a bit like buying a bag of mini chocolate bars to avoid calories…you don’t avoid any calories if you eat the entire bag of mini bars!

I think I’d be more excited to win a jelly roll or charm packs – not sure what I’d do with a cake layer. 🙂
Stuff that I don’t love? Are perfect backings!

I know exactly what you mean – when I’m not feeling the love, the project gets shunted aside. Too many things I really want to make and too little time to quilt! About two years ago, I sorted out all my WIPS and tossed the ones that I didn’t like enough to finish. It was a load off my mind and I felt relief, not guilt! And I’ve used eBay to sell fabric that turned out to not be right for me.

Sorry you’re not feeling so great about your projects. I don’t have alot of extra money for fabric right now, so I pretty much have to love something to buy it. good luck with your projects. I always enjoy looking at your beautiful work.

I know how you feel. During the past year I’ve had to cut back alot and only bought fabric that was on clearance. I don’t feel like I missed out on anything that I normally would HAVE to have. When I finally do finish a quilt then I’ll buy the backing, instead of guessing ahead of time how much I might need and wasting money on too much. I’m not enjoying the economy at all, but I’ve learned that I can cut back and it doesn’t hurt as much as I thought it would.
I love the top you made with Portugal. It’s disappointing to spend time on something that you don’t like so much in the end. I’ve started so many things that for some reason I thought would be done in a couple of weekends, but they have ended up in the same place as many others. I don’t know why I think one project will be quicker than the previously unfinished “quick” project!

I would have to agree….don’t buy it unless you love it….we all get overdone at times…it only takes a new project with a new fabric to cure me! Can you, Pick me ,pick me??

My problem is the back. I get the top done and then have no desire to piece a back. Or in the case of two other quilts, the corners. I just need to do four corners and I’m done! Yet I don’t.

One time after working on a brown quilt for a year (hand quilted queen size) I needed something bright to work on. So i bought a quilt kit of orange, green and yellow brights. Finished the quilt but I hate that quilt now. Not my colours. Its folded up in a closet somewhere. Now I only purchase fabric after I have thought how I will fit in our home. I have enjoyed reading your blog. Thanks for the inspiration.

My goal for this year is to finish my UFOs, I’ve completed two so far and have three or four more. I’ve broken my other goal of not buying fabric unless I have an immediate use for it…. It is just so difficult not to buy fabric when there is so much beautiful fabric out there. Good luck with your new plan, I know how hard it can be to keep up with plans.

I have been TRYING to use up a small portion of my BOUNTIFUL stash by making quilts from Bonnie Hunter’s patterns. Doing OK so far but my stash doesn’t seem to be shrinking. So I FEEL your PAIN. Many projects in process and a FEW getting finished. I should probably doing a giveaway as well rather than entering to win more! LOL

I am like you, I just love buying fabric as well, I walk into a quilt store and get overwhelmed by all of the pretty things and walk out of there with way too much. I am just learning to do free motion quilting on my quilts. I can’t afford the extra expense of getting them done by somebody with a long arm, and so I am taking on the challenge to learn on my regular machine. I’ve started by doing tablerunners and small quilts (the scnibbles patterns are perfect!) and so far, so good. I am going to attempt doing free motion quilting on a large quilt next, which I just need to pin together and start. You can do it, it’ll be fun! 😀
I like the fabric you used making that little quilt, sign me up for your drawing 🙂 And go enjoy what you have!

It’s always so hard to resist the pretty little bundles of fabric those fabric stores make up for us. They are enablers! With that is mind, I’d be happy to get more fabric, you enabler.

Start writing them down. Make a list of ALL your projects in different stages and you will be amazed at how close to the finish line you are with some of them. As for quilting, do a big stitch (utility type) with a contrasting perl cotton, by hand and they will be finished. Also every quilt doesn’t warrent fancy quilting, tie the ones for kids. A shame when I hear someone passed away and had 47 unquilting tops, the quilter never got to see others enjoy her/his work. And yes, smaller is great right now!

I know how you feel. I have a TON of tops… yet I still start new projects. I haven’t been feeling the love for my started projects either. I just bought 30 yards of fabric from one line (thousandsofbolts though so it was like buying 10 yards of fabric in price) and started that project. Part of my problem is I haven’t been really able to quilt lately due to a hectic schedule. But I would still love to have some more fabric to oogle.

I say donate! I just donated two quilts (unquilted, but tied anyway) to a group and they were most grateful. And not only was I relieved, I did something good!

We must have the same disease. I have several tops not quilted, yet I always want to start on something new. Thanks for getting me motivated!

I know what you mean “not feeling the love”. I am working a quilt someone is purchasing from me and am not motivated to finish it because “i’m not feeling the love”. I want to finich it thought to get my $$ to purchase fabric for projects that I love!!!!

Personally I like the quilt. Portugal is one of my favorite fabric lines but sadly, I couldn’t afford to buy it when it was available.

Good point about the 3 layer cakes, versus the fq bundle. I’ll keep that in mind next time I’m trying to decide what I want!

I know money is tight for many of us and having so many completed tops can be overwhelming. Hon, have you thought of quilting them yourself? You might even want to tie them.
I enjoy making a quilt top, but my true satisfaction comes from completing the quilt. I never feel “fulfilled” until I have it ready to use or to give.
Have you thought of just using your walking foot and doing straight-stitch quilting?
As much as I love the fancy quilted (long arm) designs, I just can’t justify spending that kind of money.
Perhaps you can trade off quilting for another service. Would the person who does your quilting be interested in that form of payment?
Don’t give up. I just know there is a solution for you out there.
I’ll be thinking of you.
Hugs

I enjoy making a quilt top, but my true satisfaction comes from completing the quilt. I never feel “fulfilled” until I have it ready to use or to give.
Have you thought of just using your walking foot and doing straight-stitch quilting?
As much as I love the fancy quilted (long arm) designs, I just can’t justify spending that kind of money.
Perhaps you can trade off quilting for another service. Would the person who does your quilting be interested in that form of payment?
Don’t give up. I just know there is a solution for you out there.
I’ll be thinking of you.
Hugs
You do find the prettiest fabrics – I love the quilt you have up now! I’m in the same boat, I’m afraid, and here I am hoping to win more. I actually met a quilter once who was having panic attacks about all the projects she had started – not there yet, but I can see it happening. I’ve started quilting some of the smaller (lap-sized being “smaller”) ones myself using just straight lines with my walking foot, and donating them to a woman’s shelter here – they’re thrilled to get them. This hobby should be relaxing and enjoyable – why do we do this to ourselves? I’d love whatever you choose if I win. Love your blog, and your puppies!

I have done exactly the same thing. I buy these jelly rolls and charm packs and then have nothing to do with them. I would have done better to just bite the bullet and buy the whole fat quarter bundle. I just love fabric. I’m addicted. But I want to stay addicted.

I feel like that commercial, you know the one with the stack of money with eyes…. Following you everywhere…. Except mine is a whole pile of unfinished quilt tops… Just blinking at me… I also feel guilty when I start something new…. Hang in there… You can always give it away as a gift… There is always a fellow quilter who would love to get an unfinished quilt top….. I enjoy your blog it is on the top of my favorites list….

I just typed a long comment then deleted it by mistake – probably a good thing as it was just needless chatter!
In a nutshell work with fabrics you love! Give Portugal to a charity?

P.S. What breed are your dogs? Adorable!!!

Everything I’ve seen of yours has been wonderful. It is frustrating to not totally love a project you’re working on and trying to muster up the gumption to finish it. Especially when there are so many other ones you want to start. I have a ton of UFO’s and it used to eat at me. Finally I just resigned to the fact that I love quilting, starting new projects and even finishing old ones, and without the pile of UFO’s, none of that would be happening.
I love the notion of only buying fabric you love. My only problem is that there is so much fabric that I love. And I work in a quilt shop! How’s that for evil? When I unearth some fabric that I don’t like (and wonder WHY ON EARTH?), I like to challenge myself to mix it up (read: hide) with other fabrics to make something I do like.
Good luck! I haven’t seen any quilts of yours that I haven’t liked so far.

I feel for you and can relate also. Some how doing something we don’t truly love always winds up costing us more!

This is why I love your blog! Just when I think I’ve gone over the deep end in fabric, I see that I’m not alone! Nicole, you have such a wonderful way of articulating our quilting vices and triumphs! You are a breath of fresh air in these tough times (and seriously, an awesome writer). I love the idea of a fabric exchange – but for now, I am bundling mine up for a garage sale in May. Perhaps I will post it on a blog first… In any event, like you, I have more quilt tops to quilt than I have time or money! I am going to steal your mantra – if it doesn’t excite me, I’m moving on!

So sorry you aren’t excited about some of your projects. I personally think the quilt you posted above is gorgeous. Maybe you could do as others suggested and try some straight line quilting on your own machine and then donate it to a charity, or sell it on ebay or etsy (and use the money to buy more fabric that you LOVE).
Thanks so much for the giveway – I’ve got my fingers crossed 🙂

It’s easy to get sucked into buying those pre-cuts, because they’re “only” $9, $35, $40, whatever, instead of the whole bundle. That’s what they’re supposed to make us do.
Personally, I love your Portugal top, but I certainly have my share of fabric I don’t love!

I think those precuts are so easy to get sucked into…we just don’t feel like we’re spending so much money…it’s more of an impulse buy than really thinking about the bigger bundle. You’re not alone in this one!

rofl Don’t think I have ever heard anyone liken their quilting habits to an unspayed cat! That is descriptive, for sure! 🙂
Is there a long arm/mid arm in your future? Simple used ones often can be had for a good price. In the meantime, use your lovelies. Drape your favorite tops over a stair rail or a “whatever”. Enjoy them! Take the ones that you don’t love and do minimal quilting on them and donate them. Move ’em out! Then you will have less clutter and MORE room for the new things that you really do love.
–my 2 cents for today.

Like you, I have had to restrict my shopping! I have been known to buy something and then by the time I get around to sewing it up I don’t like it all that much! I also have been going towards smaller projects. But then again – how many totes can one person use? I would love to win one of your prizes – since I haven’t bought anything new lately. 🙂

What a wonderful giveaway. Thank you for the chance.

I like the top. BUT, I know how different collections speak to each of us different. I am sorry you feel a bit in a rut. I’d love your fabrics, if you’re giving them away. Thanks for the thought.

I would LOVE to win any of the fabric you don’t care for!!! When I recently participated in the OP challenge, I didn’t especially care for my orange fabrics either…at first. Now I love how it’s turning out–still not finished putting the backing on so I can post a picture, but I’m excited that I found some orange polka dot flannel on sale for $3/yd for the backing!!! That makes me love it more. 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway – enter me please. By the way, I think your Blue Stella quilt is beautiful!

You have probably just hit a lull……your passion will come back. It does get overwhelming sometimes looking at all that I have and want to do. Working full-time sure gets in the way. Would love to win one of your fabrics.

I know what you mean. I feel the weight of all those unquilted tops just hanging over me at times. But, lots of times I put something I’m not thrilled with away for a while and then when I come back to it I “rediscover” why I liked it in the first place. I say, just work on what you like and let the rest go.

I have reached the exact same realization you have … I am only going to work on things I love. However, I can’t seem to let the “non-loved” fabric I have go. You are much stronger than I am with this give away! 🙂

I think many of us struggle with balancing the allure of new fabrics/patterns/stuff with what we can realistically use/afford/need. I enjoy your blog – thanks for sharing your ups AND your downs.

Good for you – this post shows maturity and wisdom born of experience – after all, quilting is supposed to make us happy, not make us feel guilty or encourage buyer’s remorse!
Best wishes as you work with your most loveable projects!!

Isn’t it awful to try to save money and wind up with something you don’t like. I do the same thing and wish I had just gone with my first instinct and would have been better off.

The quilt is lovely, but I know exactly what you mean about not feeling the love…it is SO hard to work on a project that you are not loving! I’ve been working hard lately at not getting myself into projects that I don’t love, afterall, this IS supposed to be fun!!

Another thought – if you have tops that you’ve finished that you really don’t love and have no intention of having quilted for yourself, why not consider donating the flimsies to the Heartstrings project (Mary in MN – http://heartstringsquiltproject.com/). They have a network of volunteer quilters who finish out the tops and then donate the completed quilts to lots of different charitable organizations around the country (i.e. Quilts of Valor, breast cancer survivors, children in Appalachia, etc. etc. etc.) Just a thought…
Oh, and there are also a number of orgs like Project Linus and/or ConKerr Cancer that accept fabric to make quilts/pillowcases for charity/sick kids. Gives you a warm fuzzy for sharing, gets the unwanted fabrics out of your closet, possibly a tax deduction, and frees you to work on what does give you pleasure.

Aaww, sorry you are not happy! It is nice of you to do a give a way! I would love to win!

Definitely stick to buying fabric you absolutely love, especially if money is a factor. And if youre really not keen on a particular quilt, maybe someone you know would love it to bits?
My attitude to buying fabric is to buy for particular projects; its just too $$ here in Australia to buy things “just because”. If I’m going to spend my hard-earned money, I want to love the fabric 🙂

I enjoy your blog and seeing the fabric goodies that you sew. I would love to win one of your fabric jelly roll, layercakes or charm packs as I have never gotten fabric this way as I buy for the project as the present time.

A friend and I swap quilting services with each other. She pieces, I quilt. Do you have a quilt buddy to swap quilting with?

I really do try to only buy collections that I love!! I have a few ufo projects that no longer excite me but who knows my mood might still change. Perhaps the ones that you no longer love will eventually find their way to someone who will cherish them….or maybe you could make a trade with your longarmer and get your quilt out of hawk!! I am a longarmer and I have an arrangement with one of my friends that when I have too many projects on the go she pieces for me in exchange for quilting.

My epitaph will read ‘when she gets to heaven may she find all the quilts she was intending to make”. Pick me, may as well add more to the pile.

Is it anywhere near feasible for you to buy a mid-arm quilting machine, like the HQ16? That way you could quilt your own tops and maybe a few for others. Just a thought. I know I sure do love mine and don’t regret getting it for one minute. So far I have only been doing some meandering and some pantos, but I am ready to start trying a little more free motion stuff now. As talented as you are, I think that you would be a fantastic machine quilter.
You could also take some of these projects that you are not absolutely in love with, finish them, quilt them yourself and donate them to a charity. That way you still get to do what you enjoy and help out someone else.

Is it possible you just don’t like the fabric with this pattern? After 9 years, I still am terrified that I won’t like the end product. but I’ve learned that I love the *process* just as much. If I get a great quilt I love in the end, terrific. If not, I fling it lovingly to someone who will quilt it and donate it to charity.

Wow, can I ever relate to this post! I have so many tops waiting for their chance to become a quilt. Some I could manage to quilt on my machine, others will have to wait until I have the money to pay someone else to do. And I also flit from project to project. But my downfall is not the fabric so much as the patterns. I have many that I have purchased that I will likely never use, as well as a collection of downloaded freebies off the web. I liked them when I bought them, but now other ideas seem more exciting.

I like the block pattern of the quilt you don’t love, and even several of the fabrics.
I have never used a jelly roll or such before, and I generally just buy for the project I want to work on at the time, although there are, of course, so many beautiful fabrics I could get. Would love to be entered for the fabric you are giving away!

I also sometimes get caught up in buying fabric that is cool but not my style. Those fabric merchandisers are too good. LOL! Having said that I would love to win one of your castoffs. I love reading your blog as I used to live in Monterey. They must have built the Pottery Barn right after I left.

I’ll bet there would be some guilds with charity projects that would love to take some of those tops off your hands and free you to move onto some projects you love, guilt free.

I’d love to be entered in your give-away! And I second the suggestions above about donating tops you’re not thrilled with to a group that will finish them for women’s shelters, vets’ groups, hospitals… and/or using fabric you’re not excited about to make quick baby quilts to give away, too. They’re always appreciated.

I hear you! I got hooked on bidding for fabric on ebay. The thrill of winning blinded me as to whether or not I really needed the fabric or even liked it.
Needless to say, I’m making some very unusual quilts lately. Do I like them, no, but feel the need to use up the fabric.
I totally agree — I now have to be “ga ga” over a line of fabric before I buy it. BTW I love Portugal. Perfect for fall in the midwest.

Hope you find some quilt projects that you love! I’m a new quilter so I have the opposite problem of yours… not enough fabric or stash. I’ll take a lesson from your experience. Thanks. Smiles

It isn’t much fun to work on something we don’t feel passionate about. I look at my fabric stash, and see things that I wonder what was I thinking to bring them into the house, never mind actually spending money on, but after making a few scrappy quilts, they have been disappearing so that I too, can work with fabrics I love. Good luck with the resolution.

Maybe you could donate some of those unquilted tops that you don’t love, like the one pictured, to Quilts of Valor, Project Linus, etc. They will quilt them for you and give them to someone that will feel honored to receive them.

Some fabrics I really love too, like KT Wildflowers II, I just love that fabric line. Some fabrics I have from a fat quarter of the month club that I haven’t used yet because I don’t know what to use them for. For me, if I love the fabric I’m more excited about working on it and love the finished project. I would like to be entered in your drawing and thanks so much for doing that, you’re giving me an idea to maybe do that too on my blog.

Unfortunately, the “malady” that you have is contagious and running rampant in the quilting world! I have more UfO’s and projects to start than John saw. And John saw a multitude. (old saying of my Dad’s). Anyhow, enter my name in the contest even though I’m infected and attempting to change my ways.
By the way, if you don’t like the quilt top, see if someone from a local guild or machine quilter would help quilt it and donate it as a raffle quilt for a local charity such as Relay for Life. My BFF and I make one every year for our local chapter to raffle off. We also make quilts to give away to people that have had something happen in their life such as a death, trauma or disease and need a warm hug of love to wrap themselves in.

I certainly know how you feel. I have so many unfinished projects…too many quilts, too little time, as the saying goes. But having recently discovered the pre-cuts, I would love if you would enter me in your give-away. Maybe I’d win a project that I will finish! (lol)
Thanks for a great blog (and give-away)!

I would love to win some fabric. I would use them for my church’s Hugs Ministry. We make quilts and pair them with stuffed animals and give them to the local fire and sheriffs departments for kids in crisis situations. Thank you for this opportunity. Take care and God bless, Cory

Wow, 94 comments before I got here. I have made a couple of quilts that didn’t fit into my house but they have found the perfect homes with family, friends, and/or people in need. The good thing is that this has challenged me to work with colors and fabrics that are out of my comfort zone. and, by the way, I really like the little quilt of this post.

The good thing is that this has challenged me to work with colors and fabrics that are out of my comfort zone. and, by the way, I really like the little quilt of this post.
I agree. Only buy fabrics that you are passionate about. I can’t sew projects I don’t love. I feel bad that you are discouraged. I love this hobby but wish it wasn’t so expensive. I think it is great that you are sharing your layer cakes/jelly rolls with others instead of leaving them sitting in a drawer.

I’ve seen a lot of bartering going on lately. And lots of places to donate finished tops or blocks. I’ve never bought the pre-cut packages. But it is very tempting!Would lo0ve to try one out,LOL!

Would love to be one of your winners. Have bought Charms packs, but never a jelly roll or layer cake. Have been keeping my eye open for a jelly roll with fabrics like your spring quilt. Happy Saint Patty’s day.

I have the same problems you do but can’t resist a chance for more. That’s’ my problem ” I can’t resist fabric ” Last week I called my friend from outside the quilt shop and said talk me out of that fabric I’m wanting to buy. I’m a fabricholic and I need help.LOL

Absolutely! Only projects that make you happy! …Hmm…wish I could make that resolution. I am always taking orders from other people, it seems. …But as far as leaving projects unfinished…I say…don’t be so hard on yourself. They say Leonardo Da Vinci never finished anything either. 😉

I’m in your corner with fabrics that I bought on a whim with the hope of finding time to start yet another top. Fabric is eye candy to me….makes me behave like an irrational cat nearing catnip. The fabric that I fall out-of love with usually ends up in a philanthropy quilt or is donated to the quild.

If it makes you feel any better, I have about 30 tops lying around, and I have a longarm. I keep thinking I’ll have more time next year!

It’s a bummer when you don’t like the project you’ve just spent hours on… I’m thinking most quilters have a few of those in their life time. Every once and awhile I buy fabric and regret it.. know it won’t get made into a project. Your giveaway is a great solution! Thanks for the reminder to work on things you love… life’s too short!

That quilt is beautiful! I’m working on my second quilt ever right now, and I can see that buying fabric and making quilts can be very addicting! 🙂

I love your quilt top, but I understand about colors not matching. I always look for the fabric that makes my heart sing.
Thanks,
Linda Nichols

I think we all have UFO’s stashed away that we are no longer in love with. I have given myself permission to give away or donate projects that I’m not in love with anymore. Then I know that someone is really enjoying it even if I’m not! Thanks for the generous giveaway.

I can totally relate to the “in the mood quilting”. Many have asked for me to do special orders, whereas I only like to do what I like to do and nothing twice. Keep plodding along, the projects will all get finished eventually.
Happy quilting,
Jill

I have cut back too. I am working with stuff I already have and am trying so hard to stay away from all the gorgeous fabric coming to market. But I’m more than willing to lighten your load for you. 😉

I always love your projects, Nicole! You get so much done and your piecing is wonderful and such an inspiration. So far I’m keeping up with my goal to be a more accurate piecer this year. Thanks for entering me in the drawing. I think we all suffer from the “better get a little of this and that” or it will be gone and we will be sorry because fabric availability is so fleeting.

if only I had your discipline and resolve, and there are some ufo skeletons in my closet as well.

I am there with you! I have blocks and tops, some I no longer love. There they sit.
I still cannot bring myself to buy a jelly roll when I know I have fabric at home to use.
I look forward to reading your blog every chance I get. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

I’m also swimming in UFO’s. Oh well, I have to say that it is my goal for the year to buy only the fabric I absolutely LOVE and spend my money on sending off quilt tops to be finished!

I am always so inspired by the pictures of the quilts you create. We all run into a speed bump every now and then. You could always donate that particular top that you don’t care for to some worthy cause, maybe a womens’ shelter or something? Perhaps having a reason to finish it, knowing it will be blessing someone else, might motivate you to finish. I’d be thrilled to lighten your load, by the way. Please count me in!

I think doing a restock of fabric collections and UFOs and WIPs or even quilt tops is healthy. Our tastes change over time, and I refuse to feel guilty about those things started that no longer inspire me.
I’m lucky – can usually pass ‘blah’ projects and fabrics on to my Mum, who is retired and has a lot more time. Sometimes she finishes them off, or they get a bit ‘blah’ for her, and they come back to me.
What she doesn’t want I sell or more recently, I did a major cull of fabric and quilt tops and donated them to a quilt drive for Victorian Bushfire Victim and to a local project, teaching female prisoners quiltmaking.

I always love reading your blog. You create the most wonderful quilts! I am sure that part of the reason for those great quilts is because you love the whole collection. Having a bundle gives you enough fabric to make those beautiful quilts. You are doing the right thing by giving up those precuts and spending your funds on fabric bundles you love. By the way I really like your dogs, they are so cute!

Well, Nicole, what can I say??? I know exactly what you mean when you talk about working on only projects that excite you. It took me 3 months to make a batik quilt top that was soooooo simple it could have been done in a weekend. 15″ blocks each with only 3 strips in it, one 5″ one 8″ and one 2″ all 15″ long. Sew the three strips together, you have a block. Sew 30 blocks together, add a 2″ border, a 10″ drop, you have a quilt top. I hated it for 2 reasons, the fabric was dull (due to my bad choices) and the pattern was too easy after the technical quilt I had just finished. Lord!!! I had a terrible time working on it, but I finally made myself finish it before I could work on anything else. My grandson loves it so it worked out but I will never, never, ever again, work on a project that I’m not enjoying. There are too many wonderful projects and beautiful fabrics out there to work on things we don’t have fun with. One thing I have found though, that is a little different from your feelings. I believe that every fabric collection can be beautiful if we choose the right project for it!!! It’s just that often times, I can’t put the right ones together…Hang in there. By the way, I love your table toppers, they are so fun to make.

Hi,
I always love it when you show patterns by Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company. I need to get myself some of them. You might not like the material but i think it’s cute in the photo.

I love your blog. Your quilts are beautiful and I have to admit I have copied some. I would love to take some of that fabric off your hands, please enter me in your drawing.

I would so love to win one of the giveaways. Not that I need the fabric, just because I love collecting fabric and projects.
And I have never won anything ~~~

I find that I buy certain fabrics depending on the mood I’m in. I look back later and can’t understand what possessed me to buy it. Sometimes I hang on to it and find it’s just the perfect fabric to use in a different quilt, but more often I use the fabric as a pieced backing. I usually don’t do this with jelly rolls and charm packs, just cuts of fabric. I know it’s terrible, but I am so glad you quit your old job and have a new one because your blog has been put back at the top of my “must check” list. You always have something new and inspiring to show. Thank you for sharing!!

I also know exactly how you feel!! I have only been buying fabric that I LOVE for a little while now. Sometimes I do fall off the wagon, but I try really hard. I also have piles of quilt tops finished and ready for quilting, but don’t you think all quilters have those? I have about 6 from a great grandmother so I know that it happened even in the old days.

I have always wondered why we buy fabric we are not in love with?!? One idea is to give the quilt to some one who would love as it should be loved. There are several places that would welcome a quilt donation :)This lets us feel good about those we do not like as much as others while still feeding our addiction!

Worst case scenario, you can use “less than successful/favored” tops as backs…

Hi girly! I wanted to kae a suggestion, but I KNOW you’ve considered this. Quilt them YOURSELF!! I have learned and do quite well now. Some quilts I eve tie them with purl cotton(soooo shabby cic and pretty!). I have a midarm quilting system but I still quilt some sitting at my machine. 3 or 4 a year are so neat that I pay the L.A quilter. Same me $$$$$$$!
Anyway, this penny pinching is fun in away in that itforces me to shop MY stash instead of the quilt shop’s :o) Hugs to you and the puppies, Amie and Hannah

I know one I have been dying for you to finish, and that is the pink and brown one your puppy peed on. I LOVE that quilt.
I buy things that I THINK I love in the store, but then I get them home and find they just aren’t me. It is better for me to go window shopping first, come home and contemplate for a week or 2, and then if I’m still totally in love, I go back and buy. OFTEN when I go back, I find I really don’t love after all. Quilting fabric is just darned darned expensive for me not to totally love.

I could use any and all fabrics that are given to me to make charity quilts. I love them all and rarely try to match or use collections.

I know what you mean about not feeling for certain fabrics. I haven’t purchased fabric in awhile since I have so much and need to use that up first. Plus, being retired I can’t splurge like I used to…..Oh the life of us Quilters….lol

sounds like a good idea to me. Good luck with finding the excitement, I’m sure it won’t take long when you find the right ingredients.

Amen to not buying anymore fabric that we are not in love with. When charms and jellys first came out, I was so intrigued, I just bought…now what? I too am going to stick with fabric lines that I love. Then maybe I will get projects finished!

I have that dreaded disease. I have so much it gets overwhelming to me at times. Then I think I will donate it all and start fresh and just have what I need, when along comes a project that has me digging in my stash. I am working on a quilt from 15 years ago that I haven’t felt like quilting on in all this time and then all of a sudden, I had an intense desire to finish it. Now in the middle of that, I switched and I’m working on 291 baskets for a quilt. Who am I kidding? I know I won’t get either one of these done and will start on something else I have setting around, like BOM’s as I never get caught up on those. It’s a mood thing too. Some days I want to cut, some days I want to sew, iron, whatever. I do love the Portugal line of fabric and I have Schnibbles pattern that uses that but no Portugal. Have a great day! Nancy in WI

I love the quilt you have shown! However, I do know how hard it is to finish something that just doesn’t ring your best. I hope I win something! Quiltingly, Shelley

I’ve been reading your blog for quite a while and I love all the things that you have made, including your most recent quilt. I’m sorry you don’t love it after putting the work into it. I think if I didn’t love it, I would use it to practice machine quilting on it, sometimes it is just what a quilt needs to make it a thing of beauty.

Know what you mean about the mulitple projects. I have a few that need attention. The smaller projects are appealing to me lately. I have a top in that fabric you’re showing that’s finished but waiting for borders.
Count me in for the drawing please.

I hear ya – I’m in major money saving mode myself. It has actually helped immensely to not even go look at fabric. I used to browse the online shops and stores for fun, just to see what was out there – and ended up buying just to buy. Staying away and focusing on what I do have has kept me from making those little purchases that add up so quickly …

I have several quilts worth of fabric currently living in my closet. I really shouldn’t buy any more until I make a few things.

I recently made a quilt that I bought as a kit at the Houston Quilt Show 2007. The reason I bought it was because my friend & I bought some nice thread that was being discontinued (a 2000 yd spool for $7.00). We were in Houston all of 15 minutes & I’m not even sure it was that long. We both bought the thread & were walking around and found this kit that would match. So last month I dug the kit out and look at it and said what the heck was I thinking(that’s the cleaned up version), but I have desided that this will not happen again. By the way my friend still doesn’t think she bought the kit, because the thing is so bad looking. Going forward we have told each other that we need to look closer to the fabrics in the kits and really make sure that this is what we want. With the cost of fabric going up I’m ok with buy things that I really like, but I think I’m going to be more careful with the fabrics I’m buying.

Oh my goodness… I think that the obligation to use unloved fabric has plagued us all. You are so right to make that pledge to love your projects– otherwise, what’s the point? Quilting is an art and a labor intensive hobby– you’d better love it is what I say. For the record, however, I think your Portugal Schnibbles project is lovely and it will make a super gift for someone– maybe the happiness it brings another person will make up for the blahs you had while making it :).

He, he, it looks like all quilters have the same problem. At this moment I have until 5 quilts in process. BUT I have to say , since I follow your work , some months ago (indeed you are in my links in my blog ) I have surprised how quick you are finishing , so don´t worry , girl, sure they will be in the way for quilting soon. This what I like from you, you are always showing new things to do and giving me new ideas, lol. So , since I bought the book for jelly roll quilts, I would loooooove to be one of these lucky girls!!

How about donating the top that you don’t love to your LQS and have them finish it up for a charity of some sort? Unloved fabric is a terrible thing to waste, I would surely give it a good home.

Nicole, I know exactly how you feel. I have often when depressed ended up purchasing a huge amount of fabric on sale that doesn’t always play well with my stash instead of just getting the one that I LOVE. Problem is there are so many lines coming out that I do love. Although,I have noticed that they are going on sale quicker lately, so that helps me finally. My stash though is as big as a small store.
You can do quilting of larger quilts on your domestic machine, take your time and enjoy. I have done a 120″ square customised fan. Don’t be critical of yourself too much and stand back to look, it makes a big difference than the view of being right over the top when you are manipulating it under the machine.
I really enjoy your blog, and find it inspiring and informative.

I’m with you. I’ve got more UFOs than finished projects. I like to make bed size quilts and recently, I figured out that I haven’t finished them because they take so long to complete. So maybe alternating between big projects and little projects will help get those quilts done.

I have been working hard on finishing up UFOs this year…with some luck – 2 done already! Maybe there is someone you can trade piecing for quilting with…anyone who has a longarm or frame and loves that part, but doesn’t love the piecing? I just got an HQ16 last year and I am doing some trading off of hand sewing binding for quilting…gives me practice and helps someone else get tops quilted!

I know just how you feel . . . I am trying to limit myself too . . . and so my new rule is . . . NO new fabric unless I already know what I am going to make with it!!
I actually went to my favorite quilt shop over the weekend with my quilting friends and only spent $30 . . . on PATTERNS . . . for fabric I already own . . .
That seems to keep the excitement up for me now . . . and I am finishng things!
I have 2 quilts at the quilters right now . . . and by saving about $25 a week I will actually have the money when she finishes them . . .
I would have spent more than that every week buying fabric . . .
Hope this helps . . .

I always enjoy reading your blog ….. always so well written & usually gives me something to think about. I know how easy it is to get caught up with all the new fabrics that comes out & the pre-cut fabric is so enticing & really not inexpensive. Only sew with fabric that you enjoy working with. I would love to be included in your very nice give away.

i think your quilt looks great .. sorry your not in love with it .. i totally agree with you about making things you love though and not just doing stuff to use it up .. i have been trying to apply that to my projects .. there are just too many projects to do to spend time on the ones we are not in love with 🙂 … karen ca

Tough having a quilt in hock…I am too cheap to send mine out so the big projects are hand quilted. Needless to say, it takes a while. Therefore, I do table toppers and baby quilts for the satisfaction of completing something!

Nicole,
I bought my first jelly rolls and charm packs to do a quilt. When I finished the quilt top I was really disappointed. I mailed the top to my mother for her to quilt. She really liked it. She gave me one of her quilts which I really liked. It worked out great. You are a fantastic quilter and an inspiration to lots of people…don’t get discouraged. My husband told me one day, “you’re probably not going to love every quilt you make, but that’s ok.” Keep on quilting!

oh – I was going to comment and then I scrolled down and saw about your give-away. Your line about the – cat – giving birth to projects I can’t take care of – sums up my problem too. Oops – don’t let that stop you from picking me. I am getting better at finishes.

I know what you mean; it is far better to buy what you love cuz you know you’ll find a use for it and be excited to work with it! Even so, the problem is I have less discriminating taste… I love it all I enjoy reading your blog, prarie queens got me started last summer. Thanks so much, please count me in. Nurse Payne

Just working with a jelly roll for the first time. Would love to win another to keep up the learning. I can relate to not liking all the colors that come in the roll. Seems there are fewer of those I really prefer.

i love your quilt! i think the polka dots are the clincher for me. i do love the amazing choices with the jelly rolls, layer cakes, turnovers, etc. like their culinary namesakes they are so tempting – but so far i’ve been strong and resisted – and satisfied my sweet tooth with the charm squares. i’ll be rooting for you to get those projects across the finish line!

I have always admired your projects and how you blend your fabrics. You always seem to choose just the right pattern for the fabric! If you draw my name, I will make a quilt using the “Sister’s Choice” pattern. I have been dreaming of making one, one day, and this would be the perfect fabric!

I love to read your blog even if you aren’t having a giveaway! I have gotten so many quilting and food ideas from you! I would love to be the recipient of one of your giveaways – I have never bought a cake layer or a jelly roll – but I am guilty of having way too many projects and stacks of fabrics. However, I would not turn down another!

That phrase just cracked me up…”I have been promiscuous in fabric buying…” I too have been wanton with my buying habits. I am going to try taking a page from your book and “clean up my act”.

This makes me sad to see you have worked so hard on some projects that don;t bring you joy. I hope you can put them away for awhile and maybe you will enjoy them in the future. Or perhaps donate some of your unquilted tops to a worthy cause.

Regarding “Not Feeling the Love”: I am feeling your pain. I know how you feel and your analogy of a cat that should have been spayed was perfect! LOL! Please enter me into your drawing… I have a Miss Rosie’s pattern to try out also:)

Oh I know how you feel! My $ is also limited and I really have to justify each and every purchase now! I have to think long and hard about each project, which I never did before. I used to “love” something and just buy it, but now I have to “really, really love it” before I buy it.
Thanks for sharing your stash with us! I love everything that you have and do!

I am just getting in under the wire on this giveaway but it sounds wonderful, so please count me in.
If you have quilt tops that you really do not like all that much and you don’t want to pay to have them quilted, why not contribute them to some of the excellent programs around now – like Quilts of Valor or the various quilts that are being given to people in Australia.

I have a new layer cake to try out, but I think it’s important to have the perfect layer cake pattern too. I like the portugal-so bright and cheery. You could try minatures too, they are lots of fun and faster than a big quilt. Betty

Personally I think the quilt top is ok, but don’t quilt it. Put it away, buried somewhere like hanging in a closet with a cover. There will come a day when you need something to quilt for a cause and you will be half there. Then you won’t hate it. I haven’t seen the Oprah shows but for some reason I have started to declutter my house. I have been working on my sewing room. I am going through stuff 1 at a time. So far I came up with 9 garbage bags of fabric, scraps, patterns, etc that I have donated to freecycle. I think we all need to ask ourselves…why do we continue reading the book if it sucks…work on a project that doesn’t give us joy…we need to nurture ourselves. We need to give ourselves permission to just say NO to bad quilt tops! Oh…can you enter me for your giveaway? Big hugs, Elaine

I’m sorry you’re not in love with the fabric, I think it looks wonderful. Have you considered giving it to charity or doing a raffle for it?
