Time To Get Sloppy

IMG_2315

I am kidding about getting Sloppy.  One of my favorite quilting designers is a woman with the challenging name of Evelyn Sloppy.  Her books are terrific and I have made several quilts from them.  She must have a great sense of humor with that last name.

The book of Evelyn's that I have used the most is called 40 Fabulous Quick Cut Quilts.  I believe I can state that every single one of the 40 quilts in that book is worth making.  I have so many little post it flags on the pages, it looks like an embassy.  The book that the blocks shown above come from is called Log Cabin Fever, which seems to be out of print.  (Sorry–maybe you can find a used one).

I was at a UFO (the name of my quilt group- the initials stand for Unfinished Objects) this past Monday and saw one of my quilting friends, Jenny, working on a pattern from Log Cabin Fever.   The pattern is called Apple Crisp.  Jenny's blocks were so lovely, they gave me the notion to go home and look up the book on my book shelf and see if I had anything around I could use to make the same quilt.  (That is a joke people.  You have my permission to laugh heartily.)

I had a jelly roll of a very nice fabric group called Fresh Air by Chez Moi for Moda that I had purchased last April when Lisa and I were on our Shop Hop.  With some coordinating solids, I have plenty of fabric to make this quilt.  At least I think I do.  I may have to make it smaller, but what the heck.  Now, the quilt calls for 1 1/2" strips of fabric, so I had to cut down all the 2 1/2" strips from the jelly roll, which wasn't very much fun.  But since I am into doing a bit of stash busting (yes, even me– it is about time) I decided to plunge right into the project.  (I also had no recollection of what my plan had originally been for this fabric group, which is one of the draw backs of both getting old and of waiting nine months to do something with fabric that you bought).

The blocks vary in the placement of the lights and darks.  You make half with dark centers and half with light centers, and build around the center squares with the 1 1/2" strips.  The block is a variation on one called Courthouse Steps, which is a log cabin style block construction.

My version of Apple Crisp is going to be so different from Evelyn's.  Her quilt looks very homey and even sort of masculine due to the brown palette she used.  My fabrics are very modern and kind of wild in color(for me anyway!).  Raspberry, teal, burnt orange, purple–this is going to be interesting!

Here is a large scale print from Fresh Air that I thought would be good for the border:

  3. You are sitting on a gold mine, Nicole. I did a search for the book and the cheapest price was $50!!!
Thanks for sharing the digital download link, Lisa!! My printer is busy printing it out right now!
Just wondering, couldn’t you have left the strips at 2 1/2 and made the blocks bigger, or would that have taken something away from the design?

  5. Can’t wait to see this finished. I think your fabric choices seem more suited for this pattern than what’s in the book.
You are really busy — have you done all of these blocks in just a couple of days?

  9. Nicole, It sure is nice to see your creativity flowing…
I’m glad you are not working (outside the home). I mean this in the nicest way possible! Why can’t we get paid for quilting????
I have that book too, and will have to agree with you! Just give me a couple of years to catch up with you! LOL

  11. Oh my gosh, I have that book. Got it in a huge lot of quilting books and magazined that I picked up on ebay months ago for $12 (including shipping costs) I was so surprised when the box arrived and it had about 15 out of print books and about a gazillion great magazines dating all the way from the ’80s to 2006. When I saw your post I ran (well, hobbled via cane) downstairs to check because the title sounded familiar and there it was “Log Cabin Fever”, never been opened. I really need to sit down and carefully sort through this box, just haven’t had time. Thanks Nicole for the jump start this morning. Also, your blocks are so fun. My niece is just finishing her first quilt and she used all Moda retro type fabrics, it is so delightful to see. Those types of fabrics always bring a smile to my face and when a talented quilter like yourself puts one together you just know it is going to take your breath away.

  15. I love the fabric choices you make Nicole. You give me so much inspiration. Now I just need to get off my backside, stop spending so much time reading blogs and do some stitching 😐 hee hee.

  21. I have this book too- a friend made the beautiful star quilt in it – sorry I have forgotten the title of quilt.
I used the book and with help adapted one of the patterns to make the photo quilt I made for my inlaws- ( you can see it on one of my earlier blog posts)
Happy New Year to you and yours,
    Regards,
    Anna

  23. I love your quilts and after seeing the peek at Fall Frolic I had to have the book…there are probably 9 or 10 quilts in there I can’t wait to do. By the way, how is Fall Frolic coming? I can’t wait to see the finished product, the fabric is absolutely beautiful!

  25. I just love your fabric collection. I almost bought Fresh Air when it came out, but resisted the temptation. I can’t wait to see your finished top.
