What A Difference A Day Makes

IMG_1282

Thanks to the Nancys (Near Philadelphia and In Wisconsin), I got out of my funk regarding Meadowbrook Farm.  Actually, thanks to all of you who encouraged me to starch, press, re-think, finish, send it away, or put it up on a shelf in a brown bag forever.  You were ALL right!  I must admit I was very close to opting for the last suggestion, but gave it one last try.

I got out my Mary Ellen’s Best Press and sprayed the blocks like mad.  I steam pressed them with a hot iron, and that alone made them look a hundred times better than the floppy mess they had been to start with.  Those doggone wovens I used not only stretch a lot, but ravel like crazy after all the handling they have been through.  The back of these blocks look like a bird’s nest, so I won’t be sharing a picture of that!

I had just enough fabric to make a lattice, and it made all the difference!  My idea is to put on a sage green narrow containment border and then add a light print outer border.  The postman should be delivering some border fabric in the next week.  What I ordered was the background print in the first block in the third row.  The finished quilt should be lap sized, and sort of subtle with the light colored low contrast border.  My thought was to have the blocks stand out better that way. No idea where it will go, or how I will have it quilted, but it is indeed on its way to being finished.

Here is a smidgen of my Web Sampler.  The instructions left out the part about what size to cut the corner triangles, so I have been straining my math challenged brain to figure out the formula for making them.  I vaguely recall that to figure it out you need the divide the diagonal measurement of the block by something, then add on a fraction of something else.  I am a dunderhead at math, but I hope I have other redeeming qualities.

I finally gave up and asked Lisa how to do it, and of course she had a link where everything was explained.

Thank heaven for blogging friends!  You all have chipped in to help me out this week!

Oh!  I meant to share this extremely rare photo of Ozzie being a good boy.  Here he is sitting next to his food dish, waiting for his dinner.

  1. Well, I certainly think your Meadowbrook Farm turned out great, at least from this angle! Aren’t you glad you persevered? I have to get some of the Best Press stuff too. And, now you have went and motivated me to get going on my Websampler again. I started cutting out the finishing kit and thought, “yuk” and quit. But I think I might go back to it this weekend. And, Ozzie, how could you not love little Ozzie???

  7. Meadowbrook Farm is just wonderful…I love that Mary Ellen’s…does the trick for me every time. You’re doing the same finishing kit that I am for WS…I’m tearing my hair out with those directions…I have one more row of blocks to sew together and the middle will be done…then I’m going to hold my breath for that triangle border…oh I hope it fits.
Love at that sweet Ozzie boy!

  13. I didn’t know that you had to know what you were doing with a quilt in order to make it!!! I have so many quilts that I’ve made just because I wanted to. They all seem to find a home.
You must need to start more projects. You have empty containers! How many quilts have you finished in the last few weeks? And they’re gorgeous too!

  23. It looks great! Trust that Nancy near PA to come up with a way to salvage anything. Was it bias edges that caused a problem?

  25. Well, it sure was nice to see a picture of Ozzie being good. Thank God we don’t have to set up cameras on the floor with blasting powder in a trough to produce a flash!! He never would have had the patience for that! Have a great Independence Day!!

  27. Hi Nicole,
Meadowbrook Farm is a gorgeous quilt- you have been one busy girl to get so much accomplished.
Ozzie is one smart dog- He recognizes when he needs to behave- dinner is a pretty important time to do so- also when his master is having troubles elsewhere- it might not be a good plan for him to raise havoc and mayhem too LOL
Pets are so much fun- they make us laugh regularly in our house too..
So what quilt is next on your list???
    Regards,
    Anna

  29. Hey Nicole,
Fons and Porter make a really cool ruler that takes the math out of setting triangles and corner triangles. I love using it, though not a much as I love your quilts! Thanks for sharing them.
    All the best, Amy

  35. Congrats on finishing the top. Although I’m a little disappointed. I was hoping you’d send it to me! LOL
Ozzie is an angel compared to my boys. They’d be hitting the bowl with their nose so it would be wobbling (to get our attention).

  37. The quilt turned out great.. nothing like a good press to turn things around. Love little Ozzie, he looks so cute!
Smoke cleared out here for the most part. But it has been awful, last week was a mess.We were in Monterey last night and it was the clearest over the bay ever, it was dusk and the water was so stinken blue it was like a postcard. I don’t think it was ever so pretty when we’ve been there, and we’ve been a lot. Thought of you being in your stomping grounds.

  39. Beautiful quilt and story of sticking with it!
You know…Ozzie is looking at the bowl and you like that because he has heard the news that Remy is over there at Sara’s eating food from Le Cordon Bleu at Home! Sara and I were giggling about how jealous Ozzie would be if he knew that Remy, Pippin, and Vash were all eating in high style…LOL.

  41. That dog is so SMART!
Also, I really like your idea for MB. Look forward to seeing what direction you head with that.
And Nicole, your fabric for the Sampler is perfect!

  43. It’s beautiful! I really like it a lot. The fabric is really gorgeous. I just finished my first quilt and I am looking for another one. If you didn’t think it was so difficult I might have kept it in mind for myself, I really like the pattern though, I might want to adapt it and try it. Anyways, I love it a lot!
