Since Thanksgiving is over, I figured it was time to get out some Christmas decorations, including Christmas quilts of course. The quilt pictured above is one I got back from the quilter just before last Christmas. I put it out, but in all the holiday hub bub, didn’t get a chance to really study it carefully last year.
So, it was with pleasure that I unfolded this quilt and draped it over the back of a chair in my family room. I love the symetrical design, the muted greens, the crisp red. I am so proud. The piecing is perfect, the quilting divine, but hold the phone….. What’s that? Are my eyes playing tricks on me????? Let’s have a closer look.
No. It isn’t possible. Not me, not in MY quilt.
Yes, my friends, this is what we call a Humility BLock. Is my quilt ruined by having one block completely turned ’round the wrong way? I don’t know–the mistake could not be more central to the design.
Am I disappointed? Yes. Is this a good lesson? Yes. Just when you think you are hot stuff, something happens to set your feet right back on the earth. I am not perfect, and this quilt will always remind me of that. Sure I have my good qualities, but when all is said and done, I am human after all.

My eyes did not see it and after reading your post I had to look to find it. It’s a really pretty quilt.

You know, don’t you, that sometimes something that is a little bit off is worth more because people just love to find the little boo boos in things. This could be some huge Collector’s Item someday…like those stamps that are issued with the wrong date or something on them. Or maybe it could be your signature piece…one little thing awry in each quilt…LOL. People have to look very hard to find it, etc. Like Spielberg putting in a cartoon in each movie, etc. Okay, I am just trying to put it in perspective for you…make you feel better…make you look at it in a different way. Any way you look at it…it is absolutely gorgeous in design and color.

Beautiful quilt. I like the backwards block. It adds character and like you said reminds us of our humanity. This is just a beautiful quilt. If the boo-boo bothers you to much I won’t hardly even notice it in my house.

Oh Nicole, that quilt is just stunning. But the best part is – YOU’RE HUMAN! I love the Humility Block! Love it!

I don’t think I would have noticed it unless you pointed it out – but I can hear your agony. When I hung my trees on the wall the other day, I had a moment when I thought I had turned a block the wrong way and it was all quilted and bound and what would I do? One day, someone will wonder if you did this on purpose.

I too had to really look so my guess is no one will notice. It is beautiful. Just fold it a certain way and throw it over a chair! That’s what I do and there are lots of humilty blocks in all of my quilts.

I never would have found what you were talking about unless you had pointed it out. What pattern is that, I love it. Good job Nicole.

I totally didn’t notice it till you had that one closer up picture.. my eye was drawn to the red. Anyway, funny that it should be the log cabiny part. My big first bedsized log cabin also has a turned block that I didn’t notice, my husband who double checked didn’t notice, nor did my friend the quilter. It was when I threw it on the bed that I noticed my eye couldn’t follow the design.

I didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out. I’m sure most people wouldn’t. Easy for me to say, I know it’s probably annoying to you to find that mistake in it.

Well, I finally saw what you’re talking about, but it took quite a while for me to find it. And if it took you a year to see it, I don’t think it’s much of a biggie. Forget about it and enjoy your quilt. But if you think it’s just too horrible and embarrassing to leave in your house, send it to me. I’d love the have the pitiful old thing. Just kidding, of course. It’s an absolutely gorgeous quilt.

Oh man!!! That happened to me with my pink and brown quilt. I got it back from the quilter and the first time I laid it out …. BAM! … humility block. How did I not notice that before. RRRRGggggg!!! But really it is subtle and I wouldn’t have noticed it unless you pointed it out. But I understand, I would be bummed too. I was bummed with mine.

Nicole, I think it is beautiful. I studied it and I never found it until you pointed it out! Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are the only one who will notice it. Nancy

Oh those little buggers are good to bring us back down to reality, aren’t they? I’m sure we all commensurate with you. And you know we all love the quilt – even more – with the added mistake. 😉 Humanity Love, *karendianne.

It is still a beautiful quilt!!! And I didn’t notice the flipped block until you closed in on it!
If it really bothers you, just go ahead and mail me the quilt! I will find a way to live with your mistake!

I love your quilt. It’s very “artsy”. I actually think it looks as if it was done intentionally by a very creative person!

I didn’t see it unitl you showed it. Besides I think these things add character and interest…at least that is what I tell myself.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I didn’t even see it until the third picture. The red draws the eye, so it’s really not noticeable.

Love that quilt, I think made one just like it. Is it a Lynn Mann pattern? I really didn’t notice the block, most people see the quilt as a whole piece and don’t dissect it. That is what quilt shows are for. It’s beautiful.

I KNEW you were human and now you have proven yourself. LOL!!!! I think that quilt is beautiful. I love red and green quilts.

This is a beautiful quilt whether it has a humility block or not. Someone said it will probably be an heirloom. Yes it will, and unless you put a label on it stating why it has this block, it will always have a mystery attached to it, lol.

I couldn’t see it at first. I was to busy looking at the colours…that red is perfect. Hope it keeps you warm over the holiday season..humility block and all. :o)

That quilt is beautiful and I didn’t notice it until you pointed it out. Isn’t that what we always do, point out our mistakes, LOL when no one would probably ever notice. Your quilts are always stunning.

It’s lovely and maybe more so, because of it’s imperfection. I don’t know that I would have found it if you hadn’t mentioned it!

I couldn’t figure it out until you said. You know, in many cultures quilters do this on purpose to remind themselves of their humanity. Neat, huh?

I didn’t notice the mistake in the first picture. As I followed the written text I thought you were going to say there was a stain on the quilt or something! I can understand how mad you are with yourself, but what is done is done. Creatively fold it and enjoy 🙂

Okay, missy! This is my 2nd comment, because the first got lost in the typepad mumbo-jumbo. I could NOT find your supposed boo-boo when I looked the first time. Once I found it, I didn’t think it took away from this stunning quilt at all! It is absolutely gorgeous, Nicole, humility block and all. I want to be a quilter just like you when I grow up, and that’s the truth!! It makes me feel good to know that you ARE human!

Oh well, don’t point it out and no one else will notice! Enjoy the quilt. Once my friend was admiring the design of a baby quilt and how did I come up with it??? Well, when I laid it out – those 3 yellows were certainly NOT in a row!

It may be a humility block — but it is still a beautiful quilt. Don’t let your “mistake” take away your joy in it or your sense of accomplishment. I like the quirky better than the “perfect”. It shows that it was made by a person — not a machine!
