There you see the last stitch in my binding for my Fall Sunflowers quilt. I challenged Lisa to get one quilt bound by Sunday night, not so much to push her into finishing one, but to push myself! It is such a good feeling to put that last stitch in. I find any kind of hand work to be a peaceful activity, so I can’t say why I procrastinate with bindings.
So Lisa, how did you do? We both had busy weekends, with house guests, lots of cooking, decorating and errands, so I can understand it if hand work wasn’t the highest priority!
Both my daughter and son were home for the weekend, and we had lots of catching up to do. My son just started graduate school at Cal Poly, and has already been asked by one of his professors to be a teaching assistant. He is getting settled into his new apartment and is referring to new acquaintances as "my friends", so I gather things are going splendidly. My daughter Sara is trying to find things to fill her time, as her wine maker husband is deep into Harvest, as they call this time of year in the wine industry. She phoned her dh at 8:00 Sunday morning to say, "Good morning, sweetie, are you up and about yet?" After a ten second silence he replied "Um, I’ve been at work for two hours already…" She calls this season the "Wine maker’s Widow Time".
We ate lots of lovely fall foods over the weekend. I made a butternut squash soup, a pork roast with lime/chipotle/honey glaze, roasted vegetables with fennel and a moist apple cake that was out of this world. We ate it all up before I got a picture, but here is the recipe anyway!
Moist Apple Cake
4 cups thinly sliced apples
2 cups sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 350, grease a 13 x 9 inch pan.
Combine the apples and 2 cups of sugar in a large bowl. Add the flour, cinnamon, and salt, stir well. Beat the eggs, oil and vanilla in a medium bowl. Combine with apple mixture, mix well. Stir in the nuts. Spoon into the prepared pan and bake for 50 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

I finished a binding too. And I am very envious that you have your kids home for the weekend. I am desperately missing our girls who we haven’t seen since August and won’t see until Thanksgiving. Enjoy.

I wish I were one of those who loved to bind, like so many of my friends. I made a similar comment this weekend to an online group that I belong to. I’ve secretly made a quilt for my DD who is away at college. She’s coming home on Friday and I just HAVE TO have it completed! I’ve got the binding strips cut and pieced, but still have to press, sew and stitch down. It’s a large throw so I’d better get busy. Maybe I’ll put in the six hour version of Pride and Prejudice tomorrow. roflol!

Congratulations on finishing the binding! I always feel like I’ve really accomplished something when I bind a quilt. Feels good, doesn’t it? How nice to have your children home – I’m sure you enjoyed your time together immensely!
Thank you for the Apple Cake recipe – I will be sure to make it this week!
