Bindings

I’ve been working on bindings this week.  So many quilts with just the bindings to do.  I have no idea why I procrastinate completing this last step in my quiltmaking.  I have just a bit left to do on the quilt pictured above, then I plan to start on getting the binding on my Halloween quilt.  Wait til you see that one, it is so cute!

When I began making quilts, my bindings were a gigantic 2 1/2 inches.  I went through a binding width reduction phase, first trying out a binding that was 2 1/4 inches and really liked the look of it.  Now I am only doing my bindings in a 2 inch wide strip of fabric, and much prefer that look.  There is something nice and tight and tidy about a very narrow binding, in my opinion.  Another bonus, is that it takes a lot less fabric!  I  do have a guilty confession to make though.  I rarely do a true bias binding!  Oh, now and then I do, especially if I want the look of a diagonal stripe or something, but typically, a straight cross grain binding does just fine for me!  How about all of you?  What do you do in regards to your bindings?

Ozzie update:  Sigh.  See for yourself.  I still love him though.

Those were my favorite wear-everywhere-with everything shoes.  Bad dog.  I think he looks sorry, don’t you?

  1. Yep. Sophie destroyed one of my favorite shoes (Merrells) when she was a pup. Ozzie is saying, “Sorry, Mom. I couldn’t help it. I have a monkey on my back and its name is CHEW.”

  5. Oh no – a shoe casualty! Poor Ozzie looks truly sorry, though!
I also procrastinate on my bindings. It’s horrible. I have 5 that need bindings. Five big ones. I’m trying, I’m trying! Your challenge to get one done by Sunday is spurring me on and I hope to meet the challenge.
I’m still doing the huge 2-1/2″ binding. It’s taken me so long to get the technique done just right for the joining of said binding, I don’t know if I dare make things smaller at this point. I almost always do the straight grain binding, too, unless I’m using a stripe and want to do it bias, but that doesn’t happen often.

  9. Had to chuckle at the shoe. I think anyone with a puppy has been there! I too like 2″ bindings but always get them done quick,’cause that means the quilt is almost DONE!

  11. I too almost always do strait bindings. I even try to look for stripes/plaids that are printed on the bias if I want that look, but most of the time when I get to that point, I don’t care – I just want it done.

  15. that is not a repentant dog! he enjoyed that shoe way too much! On bindings, like you I almost never do bias. Only when I want the pattern on the diagonal.

  17. Straight of grain bindings for me!! Unless, like everyone else, I want the diagonal plaid or stripe. I am still doing the 2 1/4 inch. I am working my way down to the smaller ones.

  19. Bindings are not my forte yet but I’ll get them perfect one of these days – if I keep practicing! Ozzie doesn’t look repentant – I think he’s looking for the other shoe! ~Adrienne~

  23. Ozzie looks proud of himself. you should give him an old shoe of his own and when he goes to get one of your good ones tap him on the nose tell him no and give him his shoe he will soon learn that this is his toy and he is not to touch the othersthats what I did with my dog Hamish and it worked for me. try it.

  25. Ozzie sure does look sorry…bless his heart. Zack chewed one of my mom’s shoes when he was little..of course it was one of her favorites also. She thought it was so cute and I was mortified…if it had been my shoe it would have been fine. Zack replaced her shoe for Christmas that year.
It was after that episode that we got the Bitter Apple spray…never a problem again. I sprayed anything and everything except his stuff and all was well.
I like skinny binding also…no more than 2″…I always do straight grain binding unless it’s a plaid or stripe, then I do bias.

  27. I like a 2 1/4 inch binding, maybe that makes me lazy. I’ll have to try a two inch and see how it goes. I like my corners nice and pointy and I cut on the straight of grain unless I have curves or something like a plaid or stripe.
And Ozzie, nope, doesn’t look sorry. Looks mischevieous! And super cute!

  29. Ozzie does look sorry, and he is so cute you just can’t get mad at him I imagine! I like my bindings cut 2 l/2, then cut batting and backing l/4 larger than the top. I do quite a bit of bias.

  31. ahhhhhhhhhh Ozzie is very sorry mom! 😀
I like the extra give of a the 1/4″ on at 2 1/4″ binding personally. I tried a 2″ for a while, but got frustrated with the miter corners and no give to make them turn right. I too like you let my bindings sit as well – it’s the hand work part I just dread. I should learn how to do them properly on the machine, but I don’t like that look.

  33. I have actually gone larger on my bindings over the years – mostly because I don’t like having go ease the edging under as I hand stitch the binding down and try to miter the corners. But I like the look of smaller. I just needed to do whatever it took to actually get the binding on because I too procrastinate on that task.

  35. Poor puppy. He really does look sorry. 🙁
I usually do my bindings right away, but as I say that I have a quilt in my cupboard that has been waiting for a binding for about a year. I do either a 2 1/4 inch or a 4 1/2 with mitered corners which makes a nice wide finish to the edge. I only do bias if the edge has curves.

  37. Ok, so, I can’t decide if he looks really sorry and hoping for forgiveness or if he looks smug! LOL! The very same thing happened with Jack! And, although he chewed one of my absolute, all-time favorite shoes, I forgave him, and that was the very last of the “shoe-chewing.” Here’s hoping that’s the end of it for you, too!! He’s adorable! 🙂

  39. I seem to procrastinate on the bindings, too. I like the look of the 2-1/4″ binding – the 2″ is too small for me. Must be doing it wrong! I don’t do the bias binding, either. Too much work!
Love the costume and the cake – amazing!!
Poor Ozzie – he doesn’t look sorry at all, does he? But then, they never do – they just look cute!

  41. And then there’s Gator, one of my current miniature schnauzers. Hint: her nickname Gator is short for “The Annigator” which is what my stepson nicknamed her when she was little instead of her real name of Annabel. She has eaten (we estimate) about $600 worth of shoes in her 8.5 years, hence the nickname. Best to nip this in the bud!

  43. I always cut my bindings at 2-1/4″ and in the last few years, I’ve nearly always cut them on the bias. I never could see the point before, but once I started–and I can’t remember why I did; maybe for the effect of the fabric print?–I just found I loved the way they laid flat and nice on the finished quilt.

  45. I’m still at the 2.5″ straight edge binding for most projects. I’ll have to looking into doing a smaller one and see how I like it. Ozzie does not look sorry to me. Actually, there appears to be a smile on that adorable little face!

And I love your sisters Halloween costume. That is amazing. I tried to comment on that post but it wouldn’t let me for some reason.

  49. I think Ozzie is just sorry you found her before she got the other shoe, lol. I enjoy doing the actual handwork on the binding, sewing it on the quilt is the pits though! I also do a 2 1/4 inch binding and I use Dream Request in all my quilts, so it is nice and thin and breathes.
