Hidden Meadows

Some of you noticed this quilt in the background of a photo of my Featherweight a week or so ago and asked about it.  This quilt is very subtle–what they call a "blended" quilt.  All the colors are pretty much the same tones so one print or color just blends into the next, making the individual blocks hard to pick out at first glance.  I loved making this quilt.  The blocks were super simple, and the fabrics were old Robyn Pandolph prints from the days when she worked as a designer for Moda.  It was her fabric designs that got me hooked on Moda ages ago.  These are from one of her "Folk Art Wedding" collections.  I think.  Don’t hold me to that!   If you recognize the fabric, leave me a comment as to what it really is.

The pattern came from a book called Floral Bouquet Quilts from In The Beginning.  I don’t know if it is still in print, but if you can get your hands on a copy, I highly recommend it.  It is absolutely full of one gorgeous quilt pattern after another.  Believe me, you will want to make every single quilt in the book, so it is well worth searching for it.  This pattern is called "Hidden Meadows" and is comprised of four different blocks:  a large floral one patch, nine patch blocks, four patch blocks and five patch blocks.  I made mine larger than the pattern in the book because I wanted to be able to use it on a queen size bed.  The size in the book is 55’"x 67".  The block sizes are 6 inches.  Very shabby chic, yes?  And a great way to use up a fabric bundle.  Imagine how this would look in darker, richer colors.  It was fun to make, and I am sure even a beginning quilter would enjoy this project and be successful.

  1. I believe it IS Folk Art Wedding. I made a wedding quilt for friends from this line using Steps To The Altar blocks in 12″. I’d introduced the couple and was so glad when it “took!”
    Your quilt is lovely.

  5. I think I have that book. Or one of their other’s, I love that book so much. Lots of pretty quilts and lovely staged photos. Your quilt is very pretty. I can’t tell if it’s folk art wedding… I have all my FAwedding set aside for just that ‘right’ project.

  7. That is a gorgeous quilt, Nicole. It certainly stands the test of time! Are those the first collection of Folk Art Wedding? Because if that’s the case, I completely missed out on the yellows! Mine are green and pink and though I usually tire of fabric so old, I still love FAW and I’m also waiting for just the right project for them! I was just able to score that book from a used dealer on Amazon, so maybe this quilt is a possiblity.

  9. Oh My! I have been saving all my Folk Art Wedding fat quarters-all 35 of them- for just this thing. Thank you so much. The fabric is so pretty I haven’t wanted to cut into it until I had the right project…and here it is. Just lovely.

  13. You do it again! I want to spend time with you. I pick out fabrics for my quilts, really like it before purchase and then typically strongly dislike them when I start putting blocks together. What’s the secret? It’s great to see another quilt from you.

  19. Beautiful quilt. I can’t remember the exact name of the line of this line of fabric but it’s not Folk Art Wedding. I personally believe that Robyn Pandolph made a huge mistake when she decided to leave Moda! Her stuff has not been the same since.

  23. At church, we’re handquilting a quilt with Robyn Pandoph fabrics and you can’t see the 4 weeks’ worth of quilting in the fabric at ALL!!! All of us hand-quilters wish the owner had got the quilt machine quilted in a pantograph. THAT would’ve shown up better.

  27. Love the quilt! I couldn’t agree more with Darlene regarding Robyn Pandolph. I loved her line of fabric when she was with Moda. The colours were so rich! I still have yards in my stash that I just can’t seem to cut into! I guess I’m waiting for the right pattern to come along! Thanks for sharing!

  29. This is beautiful. I will definitely look up the book. I have never made a soft color blended quilt but I think there might be one in my future now.

  33. I am trying to find some older Moda fabric by Robyn Pandolph – fabric is called “Secret Garden”. It is a very muted mauvy with strips and small pin dots. If anyone knows where to find this fabric, please let me know. Thanks.
