Look and Learn

Back in April, when we were on our quilting retreat, my daughter Sara created the cutest quilt using two charm packs and some additional white yardage for lattices.  While she was away in Japan last week, I decided to try out her pattern with the new Look and Learn charm packs by American Jane for Moda.  I did everything just as Sara did, using 90 charm squares and some creamy muslin that worked well with the fabric line.  It went together in no time, and the result is kind of sweet.  It would be wonderful in a child’s room, as some of the prints are somewhat juvenile.  On the other hand, if you bought three charm packs and left out the juvenile prints, your quilt would have a great 40’s retro look.

The charm packs of Look and Learn are available now, but the fabric has not yet been released for sale by the yard.  I would like to add some sort of border once I can buy larger cuts of the prints.  Here are some close ups of some of the prints in the line:

  1. Those fabrics are fab! I have some oriental charm packs that I got for my birthday and I might just put them in a quilt like you did..so simple but effective.

  3. I remember Sara’s and thought it was adorable. Simple quilt with stunning results. Every quilt doesn’t have to be complicated and full of 1/2 square triangles – sometimes it’s just fun to do something like this.

  5. I love the simple design of this that lets the fabric shine through. I’ve started collecting interesting boy and “I Spy” fabrics to make a quilt like this for my grandson when he is a little older and can pick out the pictures in the fabric.

  11. That is a cute quilt. I just bought 5 charm packs from Connecting Threads. I might have to “borrow” your idea.
Your applique is great. I’m taking an applique class in a couple weeks. I can’t wait.

  13. Oh thanks now I have to buy those charm packs. I’ve been waiting for them to arrive. I just said I wouldn’t buy anymore fabric for awhile. Guess awhile is over. LOL
Great quilt by the way. Any child would love it.

  15. What a super way to use charm packs! Your quilt is wonderful–and “charm”-ing! Love the simplicity of design and all the with making windows or frames for each different square. The prints of the fabric squares are so sweet! Happy Days to your & yours! :o)
