American Pie: New Quilting Project

IMG_6519

This is American Pie, a pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company from 2003.  I made the quilt in the photo about 12 or 13 years ago, and gave it to my daughter Sara.  I used a collection of 1930s lavender prints, which give the quilt such a lovely old fashioned "bleached by the sun on the clothes line" look.

I rarely re-make quilts, but after all this time, the pattern still appeals to me and will have a very different look with the fabrics I am using for the 2018 version.  Jo Morton is one of my all time favorite fabric designers, and I have a very nice collection of her fabrics from over a period of years.  I need a lot of prints for the scrappy look I want, and so far I have gathered 77 fabrics that I think will look wonderful in this quilt.

After the super intricate piecing my recently finished red and white quilt entailed, I am ready for an easy one block quilt that will pack a punch.  Each block is made with four colored squares and four smaller background squares that are trimmed with a folded corner type ruler.  I will demo the method in an upcoming post.  Unfortunately, I do not think you can purchase the pattern any more, but the instructions can be found in a Miss Rosie quilting book called "Miss Rosie's Quilt Collection", which you can buy from used book sellers on Amazon.

If you are interested in seeing some other amazing versions of American Pie, check out this red and white version  I found on Pinterest, and Thelma's version (cupcakesndaisies.com), called "A La Mode".  She reduced it to a fancy border for her basket quilt, but how gorgeous is that?

Hope you all are having a good week.  I have a couple of book recommendations and some recent tv shows I want to share with you tomorrow.  What are you reading now?  I always love to hear about it.

  1. That Thelma always makes a winner, doesn’t she. Your lavender quilt is also beautiful, and I love your words ‘bleached by the sun on the clothesline.’ So true! Always inspiring to see what you are sewing.

  13. Following your recommendation I got “Silent Companions” from my library. I haven’t gotten that far into it but it is creepy and I am enjoying it.
I also got “The Thirteenth Tale” from the library on CD and look forward to getting some “reading” in while I am sewing.
Lovely quilts. . . and the colors for the new one look great.

  16. You can never be wrong with Carrie’spattern they are amazing and never get old!
Do you know that Carrie is putting the sew sampler box for this month together? I didn’t get the box for a few month becuase I didn’t care what they put in there but I’ve signed up immediately after reading that Carrie is the designer. Can only be good!
I’v ejust finished the newest book for Nalini Singh ‘Archangel’s Prophecy’ and it’s not my favorite book of the series. Nalini is the only paranormal/romance author I read and she’s one of my favorite authors but this book … not so much. I’m looking forward to the new Joanne K. Rowling book next week and the new Janet Evanovich.

  19. Your American Pie is going to be a beauty, and what a perfect time of year to work with those Jo Morton colors. I should make a whole American Pie quit, but it does make a good border! I just finished The Library Book by Susan Orlean, if you like libraries you’ll you enjoy it. I found it fascinating and a nice change of pace from my usual reads,

  22. I just love the soft, crinkly American Pie quilt’s colors on the bed. It’s going to have a completely different vibe in the ‘new’ color palette & good for you doing a re-make on Miss Rosie’s pattern!
