Antique Stars–Now For That Lattice

IMG_1491

I took all my blocks down and started over with arranging them on the design wall.  I was more random in my placement and just decided to let The Force be with me.  I can't spend anymore time worrying about what goes where.  It is going to be ok.   Now, time to get that lattice on.

What a lot of cutting!  98 short 6 1/2 inch lattice strips and the long lattice strips all had to be cut the length of the fabric, not selvege to selvege.  When the directions state "cut two strips 99 1/2 inches long, two strips 77 3/4 inches long", etc etc, you know you are in for a lot of fabric wrestling.  It took me awhile (an entire Eva naptime), but I got those darn things all cut out.  Setting triangles and borders too.  Let's go!

IMG_1495

This is going to be one large quilt, that's for sure.  I can't fit the sections on the design wall anymore, and have had to resort to the floor.  Lucky I rearranged my furniture recently, as now there is actually room on the floor.  Don't the blocks look different with the lattice?  I love the red setting triangles.  It gives me that extra pop of red I was craving.

So, I want to share with you a little tip.  Slapping these lattice strips on isn't a complete piece of cake.  You want to be sure the strips line up and are not wonky.  See how I am pinning some markers on my long strip, where I want things to line up?

You want to be sure to do this so you get results like this:

The strips should line up perfectly.  Not like this:

A little bit off is very noticiable and not a good thing.  Yes.  Pins are your friends.

  4. I’m oohing and aahing over here; love this one!
When your lattice doesn’t have cornerstones, that lining up business can be tricky. I use pins too.

  7. What a gorgeous quilt! Love the fabric and the time consuming process of attaching the sashing is what makes this design come alive. Enjoy the journey

  13. Looking good girl. Love the setting triangles. They really set the blocks off! I am sewing vicariously through you these days. still in the moving process which seems endless, difficult, and totally unorganized all the way around. I need law and order and my sewing machine desperately!

  16. Wow … that is going to be one absolutely gorgeous quilt!! I love it! I sewed garments for 15+ years before I started to quilt, so pins are definitely my friends … old habits die hard! 😉 I have to say, though, that I think I would have to piece my sashing … I’m not sure that I have the space or patience to cut/wrestle with such looooong strips. 😉

  19. Way to go! Your stars are wonderful, the lattice looks great, the red setting triangles are the perfect added touch, and that tip for marking the lattice so it lines up is stellar!! You’re wise to let the Force guide the star placement, too. A lifetime can be spent arranging and rearranging scrappy blocks!
As this quilt grows, you’ll continue wrestling fabric, but what a glorious quilt you’ll have as a reward!
    Hugs!

  22. I had no idea the stars in your quilt would look so “punctuated” with the sashing. The red adds a lot of “wow.” Great quilt Nicole, from little stars to real punched up color and proportion. I love it.

  25. I know I sound like a broken record, but Holy Smokes! is this a gorgeous quilt! And thanks for the pinning tip. You’re again making me want to pull out another pattern from my stash. I don’t have fabric for this one though.

  28. Nicole, this is coming together fabulously. I love it, great pattern and great fabric choices. Red and brown, probably my favorite combo of all time. Thanks for the pinning tip, I sometimes just eyeball those seams, but measuring and marking is a smarter approach.

  31. I never understand how a quilter can cut so carefully, stitch so carefully and press so carefully, then have seams that don’t line up. But it happens and it drives me crazy! I’m glad you’ve figured out how to overcome this problem. The extra effort is worth it, ’cause your quilt looks marvelous!

  34. Nicole, I tear my long strips. It’s scary to do at first, but they tear straight and true, and the little bit of distortion that occurs at the edge of the fabric is well within the seam allowance. It takes all of five minutes to get your long strips. Your quilt is wonderful.

  37. Wow! The stars on their own were nice. But with the lattice they’re stunning. I love the brown. And the red setting triangles are perfect. Thanks so much for the tip on pinning. I wouldn’t have thought of it, but it makes perfect sense, and makes for a perfect quilt.

  46. Thanks for the tip on getting the lattice strips lined up properly. Perhaps now mine will look closer to “right on target.”
I agree with the comments regarding the red setting triangles and brown lattice—they have a rich look.

  49. As usual you’ve created something beautiful! I sure like the red setting squares, they seem to make it pop. I recently saw a similar tip regarding lining up blocks. (I am embarrassed to say I can’t remember her blog.) She used a pencil and ruler to “tick” a small mark in the seam allowance. I tried it with a disappearing marker and was very happy with the results.
Can’t wait to see this quilt finished. Thanks for the inspiration.
