My posting schedule is all goofed up this week. Reason? I have been sewing and gallivanting. Don't you love that word? Gallivanting? It perfectly sums up what I have been doing.
The quilt blocks you see above are all laid out on the Design Bed. The pattern is Apple Crisp from Evelyn Sloppy's book Log Cabin Fever. The fabric is Fresh Air by Chez Moi for Moda. Cute cute cute. I used two jelly rolls of the print fabric and off whites from the stash. My mission today is to sew the blocks together. I am procrastinating though. You see, I started another quilt this week.
While at the retreat, my friend and mentor, April, was working on some blocks that were so ridiculously cute I had to copy her. Immediately. I had some American Jane fabrics that have been sitting in a tub out in my garage, if you can believe it. I rescued them as soon as I got home from the retreat, knowing that they would be perfect for this new project.
How cute is this fabric? I used at least two American Jane groups–Apple Pie and Cherries Jubilee. The fabric has a retro 40's tablecloth vibe to it that I love. As you may have noticed, I am really into cheery fabrics at the moment. The blocks are so adorable, I can't choose which one is my favorite, but this one might just be it:
That touch of black is what does it for me. Someone told me once that if you want to add some zing and pizazz to a quilt, add in some black or purple fabrics!
Ok, where do you find the pattern for this block? Heather Mulder Petersen never lets me down these days, and I am fast becoming an Anka's Treasures groupie. The pattern is called Gypsy Girl and is from Heather's book Fat Quarter Five. You probably already have the book. If not, go buy it right now. It is full of great patterns (as are all of Heather's books). I plan to make another quilt from this book called Hopscotch, which maybe you will see coming together in the next week or so.
Here is the book:
Here is the pattern:
Seriously, you could use just about any fabric for this quilt and it would be beautiful. My friend Judy showed me her version, done in Fall fabrics, and it was amazing. You make a simple block with two fabrics, then cut the block into quarters. Add on the white strips and you have an extremely cute block. And, don't you love how Heather doesn't let you waste your leftover fabrics, and incorporates them into the border?

I LOVE your blocks done in American Jane fabrics! That material is definitely something I would NEVER buy, but now that I see it in your blocks it is ADORABLE! I may just have to purchase some of that fun fabric.

Both gorgeous and fun quilts. You’re right, Nicole, I LOVE Gypsy Girl! I want it! I want it! I have the book, so now I have to decide what to make it out of from my bulging stash.

Funny, I have this book and have never noticed this quilt in there before. I guess I get hung up on what fabric is in the picture in the book and don’t move on from there. I need to get better at picturing it in my head in a different fabric group.

Love all the blocks, Nicole. You’re really putting some miles on that sewing machine these days.

Great quilts! I have that book too, and have earmarked just about every pattern in it to “make someday” I love Heather’s patterns too 🙂 You are great, and give me lots of inspiration to make more quilts, thanks for that 🙂

It’s amazing fabric selection can change the look of the pattern. Your quilt squares are awesome then you look at the pattern and I don’t really like it. Your fabric selection makes me want to make the quilt but the quilt pattern itself doesn’t! Amazing! You have a great eye for fabric!

Your Apple Crisp quilt is beautiful! I think I have quilt envy, I just can’t get that many quilts done in such a short time…
Gypsy Girl looks great too, fantastic colours.

Nicole, I’m in absolute awe at how quiclky you are getting these quilts together. Also, you have such a great eye for color combinations and layout. I agree with you that the touch of black really makes things ‘pop’. Thanks so much for sharing and I will keep watching for more.

AS soon as I saw the yellow & black block, I knew it would be my favorite, too. And, I too would not necessarily choose retro fabrics but these work very nicely in Gypsy Girl…and I will definitely pay attention to any books by Heather when I visit quilt stores. Thank you so much for sharing yourself so much in this blog. I know it takes time and I, for one, appreciate it very much.

Nicole, I think you need to go back to work. When you worked you didn’t sew as much, therefore you didn’t do things that I absolutely fall in love with and MUST DO. After I saw your Spice Cake quilt, I immediately bought the pattern and more Charisma fabric. Now, I IMMEDIATELY want to buy the Fat Quarter Five book and start on the Gypsy Rose quilt. I love the Apple Crisp one, too! This does not even take into account the books that I bought this summer because of the wonderful quilts that you showed.
Okay, seriously. I’m glad you’re not at a job that you hate. And I love all of the stuff that you do. I guess I’m just doomed to be a Nicole quilt wannabe – which is really not a bad thing.

Yep, she is fast becoming one of my favorite designers too! I have this book, plus several others and I think I want to make everyone of the quilts in them! Have you seen her book, “Favorite Quilts”? Oh my goodness, it is divine! :~)

Love the Gypsy Rose blocks – so simple, but so good! Can you tell me the finished size of that quilt? I’m pretty sure my LQS has it but it’ll be at least 2 weeks before I get there to buy it 😉
