Around the House in Late August

Time to get out the end of summer, transition into fall decorations people.

I just bought this cool plate at Williams Sonoma and have it displayed on my "Bird Cage".  I bought the Bird Cage about 20 years ago and paid for it all by myself.  It was such an extravagance at the time, mainly because it is a piece of furniture that has no function what so ever.  It is purely decorative, and takes up a heck of a lot of space.  I love to decorate, and this thing-a-ma-bob is just the ticket for seasonal displays.

This is End of Summer, with the new Tuscan plate and the Italian rustic bowl full of small apples.  It makes me happy to switch things around, and this piece of furniture lends itself to that perfectly.  The bottom section, under the bowl of apples is a wine rack.  The upper part, which is out of the picture, is kind of a cupola thing, with a brass doohickey on the top.

At Christmas, I have my Murano glass tree collection displayed on it.  At Easter, the bunny collection comes out.  I have a lot of fun with it, despite its inherent uselessness.  In my present house, there is a deep niche between the fireplace in the family room and a built in desk, where the Bird Cage fits perfectly.  I was going to tuck in this arrangement of Teddy Bear Sunflowers, but I opted to put them on the bookcase across the room instead.  Gosh, decorating is fun.

  1. Anything with sunflowers and no roosters is awesome! I wish, wish, wish I had space for such decorating…no craft fair would ever be safe! Teddies and sunflowers…hmmm I think I must find an applique pattern of this…

  3. I’m so glad you’ve had time to so some pre-fall decorating, it does do our souls good. I saw some leaf shaped, suede place mats last week in different colors and shapes. I bought one red, one gold and one sage green mat and have them going down my kitchen island. Just a little hint of fall in my house, it perked me up and kept me motivated to keep the island clutter free.
I LOVE your bird cage knickknack rack…..it’s ready for any decorating style.
BTW…what happened to the black crows….did they stay or did they go?

  5. I have just clicked through all the quilts photographed in both your Friday album and the regular one. What a treat! I find that my tastes run very similar to yours, i.e. I have several Carrie Nelson quilts planned, plus several others that you have featured.
I have just retired, so am anxious to get revved up into high gear and begin the many projects awaiting me! Thanks for the inspiration!

  7. I forgot to mention the Tuscan plate! I have a 10-year love affair with all things Italian, and have decorated most of my house in an Italian/European style. We (my husband and children) have all been to Italy at least once, and some have had multiple trips. I have been to Murano to see glass makers at their craft, to Tuscany to see the beautiful hillside towns with towers dotting the horizon, as well as countless other unforgettable sights! Your plate is delightful!

  9. I love the “bird cage”. I don’t like to decorate too much for seasons or holidays. I just never know where to put stuff and I don’t like to move my regular decorations. Once in a spot, they are there forever! Something like this is just perfect!!

  11. I hate to inform you, but your decorating is going to change drastically when you have grandchilden. And don’t think you won’t. My son a bit ago let us know he was never getting married and never having kids and now he’s married and the father of 2 precious boys. My decorating has changed. I do love fall decorating and can’t wait to get it all out but right now here it’s 93 degrees.

  13. Ha ha Thelma, I too, have wondered the fate of the crows. They’d be great for decorating this time of year.
Our trees are just starting to turn color. It’s been a great summer, and I welcome all that fall brings….fuzzy socks, warms soups and stews, orange and brown decorating themes and crisp mornings! Oh, and more time to quilt.

  15. Hi Nicole! I came across your blog when I was doing other research for our Guild Quilting Retreat. I was hooked! I spent the afternoon reading your blog and thoroughly enjoyed your adventures with those adorable puppies. Yours quilts are so inspiring! An hour a day would surely help finish those UFOs, right? Right. I’ll try. I am also looking forward to fall, as our province has been on fire for most of the summer. Love your decorating and your organizing tips. Thank you. 17. How pretty, Nicole – and so great that your birdcage has weathered the seasons for so many years – don’t you love it when a useless piece of furniture really turns out to be so useful – LOL! I love decorating this time of year – for me most of my decorations come right from the outdoors – at no expense whatsoever!
    Cheers!
