Baby Pants

002
I have a question for all you newish moms out there who might be reading this.  What size clothing is practical to get for your newborn layette?  I have been avoiding the "newborn" size because I figured it would only fit for a week or so.  However, yesterday I met a woman with a baby and asked her my question about practical clothing sizes for a new baby, and her answer surprised me.

She said that all her layette clothing items were in the 3 to 6 month and 6 to 9 month ranges, and that when her baby was born, it had absolutely no clothing that fit!  Did any of you have that problem?  Do you recommend getting some gowns or sleepers in the newborn size?

When my sisters and I were in San Luis Obispo, I came upon a baby shop that had just put a ton of things on sale, including the sweet baby pants in the picture above.  They are meant to be worn with a little undershirt over a diaper.  Since it will be in the 100's where my daughter lives when baby E is born this July, they seemed like a good choice.  They are the 3 month size.

And of course a little hat to keep the sun out of baby's eyes is a must.  Aren't those soft little pink polka dot pants cute?  The back pocket just cracks me up.  As if baby would have a need for a pocket.  Although that Binky has to go somewhere.

Oh, and the new mom I met yesterday also told me she has never had to buy her child any clothing.  Every single thing the baby owns has come from its grandmothers….

  1. Ok, my comment probably won’t be super helpful since I had preemies and even preemie clothes were big on them! 🙂 But, personally when the girls caught up, I always felt clothing were pretty generous for the age. 3-6 month clothing were pretty big. I think it would be smart to have some newborn sizes for the first 3 months. We also never bought the girls any clothes until they were nearly 3!!! We were fortunate to have very generous friend and family!

  3. The problem is that it is hard to know ahead of time how big Baby will be as birth size might be 6 lbs or could be 9 lbs (50% bigger). My child was smallish, always wore the size corresponding to age pretty much until age 10. However, my friend’s son weighed more at 12 months than my daughter did at 3 years. My advice is not to go wild. Get a few things in newborn size and 6 month size that are weather appropriate (sounds like onesies and shirts). You can buy more in the weeks after the birth when you have a better idea of size. Baby clothes tend to be season-current, unlike women’s clothing which is months ahead.

  5. Hi Nicole: My daughters’ July baby lived in onesies. They come in teeny tiny sizes too. Sewing grandmothers can decorate them very creatively by fusing letters then big stitch quilting them in place, or, add a little skirt to the onesie, etc. See, the fun is beginning already!

  7. Baby gowns are an absolute must. They’re so easy to wear, and changing diapers in those is so easy! Especially in the middle of the night when you’re half asleep. My girls wore those gowns as long as we could! The sleepers are great, but not for the first couple of weeks cuz their legs don’t stay in the leg holes. Stock up on onesies. Tons of onesies. I would buy onesies in a size up so that you don’t have to worry about shrinkage. Carter’s (the clothing line for children) does a really great job of making coordinating onesies and pants. The pants are great because they’re not too tight on their little tummies. Enjoy!

  9. I was told not to get newborn clothes so I stocked up on 3-6 months. When my little guy was born he had one outfit! He was 7 lbs and was in newborn for quite awhile. My rule was if I loved it and it was special I got it in 3-6 if it was just cute I got it in newborn.

  11. I could have changed Frankie’s clothes 12 times a day and not run out of clothes for a week! Good luck with your dilemma! xo

  13. When my first two girls were born they weighed over 10 lbs…everything was too tight!! So for the third baby I stocked up on the larger sizes and she weighed just over 8 lbs- huge difference!! Had to go buy the smaller sizes…so Cathy is right- wait and see how big the baby is. And I also loved the gowns..and they would be cooler in the hot climate.
Congratulations…so exciting for you and your family!! Enjoy every moment!!

  15. I would get a couple of newborn items and maybe 1 nice newborn outfit to come home from the hospital. My baby was just over 6 lbs and wore newborn size for 2-3 weeks. Of course the going home outfit i got was too big. The rest get 0-3 which she should wear for about 2 months. Watch out for buying too far ahead for seasonal clothes. The gowns are great for newborns especially at night. with the hot weather onesies are a must. Carters even has cute tank top onesies. My baby has fit into Carters great and when she just turned 6 months we had to up her size to 6-9. I would also suggest zippers are much better than snaps or buttons whenever possible.

  19. My daughter was tiny when she was born (a little too early) and she is the only baby I know of to ever wear newborn size until she was 3 months old.

  21. Well, both my babies were 7 1/2 pounders, but gained weight really quickly. My son was the little Michelin man by the end of 3 months! He was so fat– he had gotten to 20 lbs! Onesies are a must in the hot weather, and then gradually you can transition into the footed sleepers when it gets to be about November. Whatever you decide, have a blast getting all ready for sweet little Baby E.

  23. I agree that newborn sizes are needed for only a short time, but the baby will need a few. Check out the re-sale shops for newborn and little used baby and toddler clothes. You’ll be astonished!
We liked the sacks with a drawstring at the bottom because the baby stayed covered while asleep and they fit for months. The sacks also had cuffs to cover tiny hands and fingernails to prevent scratches when sleeping. Since most homes have air conditioning, cozy and warm is important even in July. Oh, and DS1 is named Zack, so we had “Zack in the sack!”
Of course, cotton clothing is cooler in the heat.
My main suggestion is that Sara and family not tip-toe and whisper when the baby sleeps. The best advice I was given is to get the baby used to sleeping with normal household noise going on.
Enjoy every minute of these exciting preparations!
    Hugs!

  25. Here’s my two cents: First, it will depend on how big the baby is when she’s born. An 8lb baby isn’t going to fit into Newborn (NB) for that long, if at all. However, a smaller baby (mine were 6lb 12oz and 7lb 4oz) fit into some NB clothes for a few weeks. My advice, not a bad idea to have some NB clothes, but maybe wait to wash them until after the baby arrives so you can find out if they will fit or not. Probably wouldn’t hurt to have one outfit washed and ready to bring the baby home in NB size though.
On a side note – same thing goes for NB diapers – my first didn’t wear them as long as my second child. I would only buy one package at a time.
Baby clothes usually include weight and length for each size — that is more the guide to follow rather than 3-6 months for a 3-6 month old.
Congratulations!!!! Enjoy all your shopping and sewing for you granddaughter!!

  27. I was induced with my daughter 2 weeks before her due date – and she weighed just shy of 10lbs. My first child was a boy – so I was over the moon with giddiness to buy little girl clothes for her. Almost nothing fit. She was wearing 3-6 months out of the hospital. I even invested in a Baby Bjorne dreaming of taking her for walks snuggled up with me….those little thighs of hers didn’t have a hope of fitting!!! Since this is your first grandchild – and a little girl to boot – well I know what I would do. I would have a hard time stopping myself.

  29. I’m sure it’s hard not to go crazy buying – baby clothes are so cute! Two things I can think of.One is you don’t really know when they may have a crazy growth spurt. My son wore some things hardly at all because he had some big growth spurts. The second is that baby clothes are just like all others. Size varies a lot by brand, and some certainly shrink more than others.

  31. It depends… my little (barely) 5 month old munchkin is wearing 9-12 month clothes. Which is frustrating, as the ones I pre-bought for him are fall clothes, and we are just starting summer in the desert. He wore 0-3 for about 3 weeks, then 3-6 for a month or two, then 6-9 for another month. There is just no way to predict! I would buy a few things in 0-3 (4 or 5) a bunch in 3-6, and then buy others when she gets to those sizes. Just my two cents!
Those little pink clothes, by the way? Darling!!

  33. I always say there are two sizes of baby clothes—too big and too small. All my 3 babies were in the 7 lb range so wore newborn for several weeks. And all were spitters so had their clothes changed several times a day. Two were born in August so lived in onesies and soft pullon pants with no buttons or snaps. The other was born in March and wore long sleeved onesies with more like sweatpant bottoms. I was not a fan of the gowns, but many people like them. I had two Baby E’s–both my daughters have E names.

  35. I would buy baby clothes in the bigger sizes. Once the baby arrives and you know how big she is you can always go on a blitz while mom and babe are still in the hospital. It’s just such a shame to buy newborn size when they may not even fir at birth. my son was such a monster-sized baby he was in newborn size for about 30 seconds!!

  37. Lily was 6 lbs., 13 oz. at birth but she still needed to wear preemie sizes for those first couple of weeks. Lucky for me my SIL had a baby 6 months earlier and her newborn stuff fit Lily to a “T”

  39. I’m going to put in a vote for some newborn stuff but stay practical (which sucks). The best thing ever in the entire universe? Side-snap shirts. Quick diaper change, can throw a sundress over them to dress ’em up a little. Gerber makes them in lots of good sizes and you can do adorable hexie flowers on the front or whatever. I loved the *idea* of pants to cover the diapers but when little miss wanted her diaper changed she wanted it changed NOW and anything that was more work to get off than a onesie just didn’t happen. Hence the love for the snap shirts. Onesies are great too.
For my girl the grandmas went for frilly and lacy and lots of eyelet and she wore them only for pictures. I love the idea of buying great practical stuff and then dressing it up in a personal way with applique or trim or buttons. It’s what Mom needs but with Grandma’s love all over it.
We used oodles of the elastic or drawstring bottom gowns because they were in a pretty generous range of like 0-6month. Like the previous poster said, it may have been 103 out when we brought her home, but with the AC on at night the long sleeves and foot covering was super helpful.
Also, keep in mind that if sizes are off by even a few months worth of growth (and my girl was 6lb8oz and only put on an ounce a week so that growth took a while) you’re not just talking about size, you’re talking about seasons too. We overbought for 3-6 month and she never wore anything we bought because by the time she was big enough it was winter. Oh, and a second vote for resale or consignment sales, since many moms have the same issue there’s always tons of baby stuff with the tags still on. Whenever and whatever you buy you’re going to have a blast!

  41. Even on my 8-1/2 to 9 lb. babies the 3-6 month sizes were quite large. I agree with someone above who said not to go wild. My babies’ outfits also didn’t need to be changed 18 times a day. What do they do to get them dirty? If you changed them when they were wet/dirty it didn’t soak through to the outfit. I changed them daily when they were bathed just to keep them fresh and baby-smelling.

  43. I also rarely pre-bought clothing because growth was so unpredictable. I would rather spend the money on clothes I knew would fit and pay full price than buy something on sale that might never fit them. Others revel in buying stuff ahead of time and swear it works for them. It all depends on the person.

  45. That’s really hard to predict. It all depends on the baby’s size at birth and that can vary a lot. My daughter was full term but tiny (she still is small at 31) so newborn was too big for her! She wasn’t in newborn clothing until she was 6 months. I would recommend newborn gowns and things with elastic.

  47. Buy mostly 3-6mo size. If the baby happens to come early or is small, it’s easy enough to get a few smaller items (Or, buy them as you see them and be sure they are returnable)

  49. Newborn sizes are a must, unless the baby will be very big. You will know closer to the date which will allow you a bit of time to pick up a favorite outfit or two.
I bought my daughter (now 23) a lot of jersey dresses.
Those little onesies that had a skirt attached to them were a staple in the wardrobe for a while and since we are hispanic there was the traditional linen embroidered undershirts/dresses.
Looking for a picture I ran into this pattern with almost the exact items my daughter had in her layette:

It’s so hot in Pto Rico (where my daughter was born) she used to have tons of these little pieces. They are passed down through generations and are perfect for babies to outgrow without costing an arm and an leg since each piece uses such a small amount of fabric. They are typically embroidered by some relative… just a few flowers here and there.

  53. I like having a few newborn things so they aren’t absolutely swimming in their clothes those first few weeks/month. Yes, they grow out of them quickly, but that is the name of the game in baby clothes. I would advise not getting too much in any one size.

  55. my last 2 babies were 6 pounds. Newborn (0-3) month size fit them for 2 1/2 months at LEAST. and even those they were flooding in in the hospital. so I recommend 0-3 mo. size, definitely.

  57. Thanks Mom!! These look so adorable, and that hat!! I have no idea. I think we need newborn sized onesies, as it will be summer. And worse comes to worse, you get to run out to Sonora Walmart and buy what Baby E needs when she’s born.

  59. My baby did not look good in pastels.
As it turned out, she looked much better in bright colors. So remember shif coloring plays a part in clothes selection.
The clothes that you bought are precious. You are a good shopper grandmother.
    Regardless, have fun.

  61. My son was a big baby, 8 lbs 12 oz and I still needed the newborn size for a few weeks. You’re right– that’s not long, but I still really needed it (and my favorite onsie of his in that size is still precious to me). My twins, obviously, were tiny even at full term, and they wore premie for a while, then newborn, and didn’t get into 3-6 mo until they were 3-6 months! Newborn babies are still swaddled a lot (even in the heat– have her look for breatheable swaddlers) and so even just a pack or two of onsies in a tiny size should suffice. I have hardly bought clothes for my twins, either– mostly because of hand-me-downs. I LOVE them! Bet you can’t wait to meet little E 🙂

  63. When my daughter was born she was very small and I only had one outfit (gift) that fit her so she wore that lots, everything else I had to roll up, etc. Even the newborn stuff was a bit big. She stayed small for the first few months, but when I went to pass her clothes onto babies 6 months younger than her they were already in the same size as she was. One friend gave me 3 outfits, the same different colors in 3 different sizes, I thought this was great and all three were used.

She stayed small for the first few months, but when I went to pass her clothes onto babies 6 months younger than her they were already in the same size as she was. 65. Although my daughter did grown out of the newborn size within two weeks, I did wish I had one or two sleepers that size. The 0-3 month ones were just soooo big. I really liked any shirts or sleepers that didn’t require me to pull anything over her head. Lots of snaps up the front were so much easier to get her in and out of and with much less crying.

  67. Get a FEW newborn sizes but I think the 3-6 months clothing sizes are good. The baby will be out of newborn clothes before you know it.

  69. As everyone has said, it depends on the baby’s size. I had four kids, and none of them could wear newborn size past the first week – one of them never wore NB size at all! I never buy anyone less than a 3 month size.

  71. Wow, you’re getting lots of good advice! Love the onesies, and I vote for not getting too many newborns. My son’s hospital picture was in size 6/9 mos and I was a 5 1/2 pound baby, so go figure. Also, I notice people mentioning the drawstring gowns. I believe they don’t make them with the drawstrings anymore because they were a choking hazard, got wrapped around stuff etc. So you might want to make sure you get her those little gowns with the elastic bottoms. My daughter was always spitting up so those burpey clothes will save the amount of clothes changes if she needs them as did a huge supply of big bibs…especially the ones that covered their whole top. Another must were those bath towels with the head covers. Oh and big plus for girls is you can always buy the larger size dresses and have them wear them long all the way until they’re almost tops. I did this with my daughter because she had favorite dresses (as did I), I just added ruffly panties or shorts underneath when they were getting small. It helped she was a beanpole though 🙂

  73. My Sara really liked the “sack” gowns that have a drawstring at the bottom. Easy to change them with that on. I would advise not too many really “newborn” things. They grow so fast. The brands run differently too. Once you get to see her, you’ll have a better idea of size. My youngest granddaughter will be 1 in 8 days and she is wearing 12-18 months in most everything. Baby sizes are really crazy for a while. Once they get in toddler sizes the changes in size slow down a little and they actually starting wearing stuff out! Have fun. Girls baby clothes are so dang cute! Mary

  75. I have big fat babies and grandbabies. They wear newborn stuff home from the hospital, and that’s about it. (Those wonderful nightgowns are perfect, and last a long time.)
Don’t take the tags off, and return what you need for the correct size.

  77. I didn’t like putting mine in gowns, since to go anywhere at all, they needed to wear a five point harness. (We went for walks with the baby in the car seat, which clipped on top of the stroller.)
By six weeks, it wasn’t safe to put the baby in the baby swing without the lap bar down, or the straps buckled.
My two healthy full term boys wore NB size in footed sleepers, but not in shirts/onesies; the older had proportionately short legs, and wore NB until he was three months old.
Even in summer, I never got a baby asleep in an AC’d room without something covering his legs… skin on skin contact as I put him down always woke him.

  79. My daughter weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces at birth and spent the first few weeks in preemie clothes that I had to go buy because all the 0-3 month stuff was too big!

  81. Go for bigger, since they can always grow into it, but can’t shrink. My baby lives in onesies. 🙂 My son was 7.5 pounds at birth. I think he wore a few newborns (that were on the bigger side) and lots of 0-3 month outfits.
At 2 months, the 3 month outfits didn’t fit so well, but I just kept stretching the bigger ones to make it fit.
3 months, Caleb was wearing 6 months.
4 months, it was the 9 month outfits.
    5 months, 12 months… barely.
6 months, 18 month clothing. It was INSANE. I’m so glad I didn’t try to buy ahead.
    8 months, 24 month onesies.
10 months, live in denial. He’s still 24 months, but I only can get one brand of onesies to fit. They don’t make 36 month onesies.
By the way, Carter’s runs big, Gerber runs small.

  83. And make sure to get those cute leg warmers (baby legs, chugalugs, etc. that can be put on for a little warmth with a little skirt. They go on like a tube, and come in polka dots and stripes…adorable. I just bought some for a gift that had pink strawberries. So stinking cute!,

  85. I think that you will definately need some newborn items. Gowns are the best. They will outgrow them quickly, but the next size will be way to big. I am leaving today, we are having a new grandchild tomorrow. This will be number 5 for us.

  87. My granddaughter weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz. when she was born, but has stayed small, 9 mos. old and weighs 15 lbs. She did have and wear a few new born items, but I found that she spent a long time wearing 3-6 month sizes, she has just now moved into 9/12 month items. Yes, your daughter probably won’t have to buy any clothing, because grandpa/grandma buy LOTS of clothes…or we do. We have a Carter store at an outlet mall near us, so we can get great deals on really cute stuff, so we stock up and don’t have to spend a lot of money to get it either!

  89. It’s been a loooooooong time, but I seem to remember that some of my baby’s layette didn’t fit from day one. I don’t think the newborn sizes fit a lot of newborns, especially in these days of healthy babies.

  91. I see you have lots of comments so I’ll just add a bit about brands… Ralph Lauren sizes run small (my boys both wore RL 0-3m home from the hospital) Gymboree sizes run large and Baby gap are pretty true to size. Carters onsies are true to size also.
If you sew for baby, I highly recommend the Kwik Sew patterns for knits. They are true to size and classic styles that you’ll be able to use for a long time as perhaps more babies arrive!

  93. I’ve had 3 babies born June/July in the 7-8 pound range. I found some lightweight newborn sleeper by Little Me that went up to 8 or 9 pounds that fit my babies wonderfully. The up to 10lbs Carters were too big for the first 6 weeks or so. They are right don’t go crazy, you never know how quick they will be out of them. I found some of my things at thrift shops for $1 or $2. It was nice having things that you didn’t have to roll the sleeves back. I don’t know about the 100 degree heat where your daughter lives, but I found I spent a lot of my time in the a/c nursing my baby, so the sleepers were an appropriate weight. Good luck with your new grandbaby. So excited for you.
