Blocks Done

Photo-4

Happy blocks are done.  Once I made 60 or 70 of them they started to come together.  No, actually, it wasn't that bad, quite.  I do like the lively look of the colors and design, and think it should be a fun quilt once the blocks are sewn together. Man, did I ever use a lot of fabric for these blocks.  I think I mentioned that I kept trimming them all wrong and wasted about ten blocks!  Oh dear.  Maybe I can make a pillow or something out of the mistakes.

I am having a bit of an issue.  One thing I hadn't really even considered is that it might be an problem to have the block segments line up nicely together when they were being stitched together.

Let me just say…they are not lining up right.  I don't know why, but those darn seams are off.  I used the Kaleidoscope Smart Plate Ruler, which I will demo in a future post.  You would think the units would all come out the same, but I am experiencing a bit of a disconnect when it comes to lining all the seams up just so.  I swear I am going to take up paper piecing.  This is just so frustrating.

I was super engrossed in this project all Saturday, and thoroughly enjoyed making the block units.  Today I will apply myself to sewing the blocks together and hope I will soon see that amazing secondary circular pattern emerge.  And if it doesn't work, oh well.  This has truly been a fun experiment.  And there is more fabric where that came from.  I really liked making a "one block" quilt, and think the next one I do might be the same concept.  Maybe an Apple Core, or a Crumbler, or something along those lines.

  7. I just made a kaleidoscope quilt using the same method and had the same problem matching up seams. There was a lot of easing and pinning etc. involved. In the end I was able to get most seams close enough that you don’t notice overall but I will probably not use this method again. I love your blocks, the colors and fabrics look great together. I can’t wait to see it all done. Press on!

  16. That really is one happy quilt top!! Kudos for sticking with it! I use (or purposely make) extra blocks to piece into the backing fabric. They add interest & carry the top theme to an otherwise ‘vast wasteland!’

  19. I really like the look of this block. I have a similar pattern but haven’t been courageous enough to try it. I also have the Steam Punk pattern… it looks like it’s fun. You might have given me confidence to try it out… especially since your seem to have make a lot of progress on your quilt in such a short amount of time!

  22. I love it!! I feel your pain about trying to get them to line up when you sew. 🙁
I love paper piecing but it wastes a lot of fabric too!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you! ;p

  25. How about putting sashing between the blocks, even if it’s only an inch wide. Then it won’t matter if they line up perfectly. It’s stunning, regardless.

  28. Bonnie Blue Quilts has a pattern called Lincoln’s Watch that looks very similar to your pattern. It even comes with a template. I’m not sure how the seams line up for the Bonnie Blue pattern but they look good in the picture on the pattern cover, lol. If you have this pattern maybe it will have some tips that will help.

  31. I don’t know…they look pretty good to me Nicole. It’s amazing how different each block looks yet it is the same block pattern. Whoa the power of fabric choices. It’s looking great, can’t wait to see it together.
Hope you had a great day and I also hope that your week ahead is enjoyable.

  34. They’re so pretty, Nicole! Congratulations for sticking to it. Whichever ruler you use, it seems there will always be issues with this block. When I used the Smart Plate ruler I found it was like almost being dyslexic – you have to make sure you’re lining it up properly over and over to get it to stitch properly.
    Cheers!

  37. Thems fighting words…”I’m gonna take up paper piecing”. I admire your persistence in trying to get things right. I tend to avoid blocks with shapes that require special rulers, templates or paper piecing! Too time consuming for me. Being time poor, I like slice and sew type quilts.
