Blocks of the Week

I have really been enjoying two block of the week programs that are going on in the quilting world.  The first is Lisa Bongean's 2017 Triangle Gatherings.  Each week we make a block that consists of 16 half square triangles that are arranged in a different manner.  I am making mine out of a couple of collections of Primitive Gatherings fabrics lines called Snowman Gatherings.  My block is 6 1/2" unfinished, but you can certainly make your blocks smaller in scale if you choose.

The second block of the week program is called Moda BlockHeads.  This block is 6 1/2" unfinished as well.  Each week, one of six well known Moda quilt/fabric designers comes out with a new block design.  The block for this week wasn't for sissies, I tell you.  Those little half square triangles measure 3/4".  To make this block come out right takes some precision cutting and sewing.  I used 3/4" triangle papers for the half square triangles, which helps a lot in getting accurate results.  This block was designed by Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings, and features her 3/4" triangle papers.

Both of these block of the week programs have really challenged me in terms of improving my accuracy in piecing as well as getting more practice with machine appliqué.  I am enjoying the process and the results I have achieved.  There are a lot of posts on Instagram #modablockheads or #2017triangle gatherings, if you would like to see what other people are doing.  Are any of you participating in either of these sew alongs?

  1. I am doing the Moda Blockheads…as are a few fellow quilters from my area in Vermont. We get together once a month to check our progress and offer encouragement! I still need to do #11, as it looks like a stickler. You did a great job. Maybe I’ll have to try the triangle papers.

  4. How do you keep up with blocks of the week? Do you have a specific day to do them?? Lovely blocks, by the way!

  7. No, neither one although I am certainly following along. I am really trying to focus on undone projects and keeping up with Jo Club projects. That statement is truly a full time job for me. Too much temptation everywhere!

  10. I love the modablockheads blocks they re really fun to make! And yes, the block last week was a challenge but honestly I thought it would be a lot worse then it actually was. I’ve downloaded all of the triangle blocks but didn’t made one so far. Perhaps when I’ve finished some other things.

  13. Love your wee blocks and the bravery of you and others to tackle such tiny block units. I’n not doing either of these challenges.
    Hugs!

  16. There’s just so many stitching opportunities. I was starting to do Lisa’s triangles, but have kind of petered out. I’ll make a few more and come up with a plan on how to use them. Like you mentioned The 6″ size is a great way to practice your sewing accuracy.
