Christmas Decorations!

002

Hey, thanks for all the great comments on Kindle and other similar devices.  I really think what I want is an iPad, because of all the other whistles and bells that it has, but I don't think I or my gift givers can afford one this year.   I will probably end up with a Kindle.  I love the portability of the device and the cheapness of the books.  As much as I love a real book in my hand (believe me, I have spent thousands of dollars on real books), the idea of being more environmentally responsible and not using up so many resources appeals to me.  It is such a hassle to go through all my books every year and decide which ones to let go.  I donate them to libraries and schools, and occasionally take them to a used book store in Monterey.  I think I have about $800 in credit at Booksellers right now.  Schlepping all those heavy cartons is such a pain.    And the proprietor won't take everything, so I end up having to make another trip to Goodwill or someplace for the rejects.  It is a lot of work!   I also don't like to wait for things.  Impatient me wants that book right NOW and doesn't want to drive to the bookstore and stand in line, or place an order on Amazon and get my book in a week.

OK, enough of that.  See my snowman candle above?  Isn't that just so festive?  It is from last year, so I am being economical and using it again.

That is my little kitchen vignette.  I haven't gotten much out at this point, but probably will later in the week.  My husband set up the tree in the living room, but no ornaments are on it yet.  I don't think we will have much company this year over the holidays, so I am thinking less decorations is maybe better.   I say that every year, don't I?  Seriously, why should I drag out fifteen boxes of holiday decorations and look at them all by myself for three weeks and then put them away again?  I am definitely going to scale back this year.

Plus, ack, my holiday dishes and a lot of the decorations are all packed up in storage, because this summer I thought we were moving.  I do miss my Christmas china.  Do I want to drive a total of seven hours to go fetch those dishes?  Not really, but maybe I can talk my husband into doing it.  Hah.

Sorry I don't have anything particularly quilty to discuss today.  I do have the day off, and hope to get into the sewing room and get something accomplished so I can show you all tomorrow!

Thanks again for all your helpful comments on the Kindle!

  3. I love to go simple some Christmas’s… This year will be one of those…
One daughter has a Nook and one downloaded an app on her iPhone to read. I can’t seem to be able to give up my books.. so I belong to Paperbackswap online. For each book I mail to another member I get a point. For each point I get to order a book. They even have a wish list… It’s not instant, but I love getting books in the mail…

  5. The older I get, the less I put up as far as decorations go. Somehow when I have a lot going on mentally, I need less clutter visually to balance my life.
So I select the few things that I really love, and put them out. I like it that way.

  7. Nicole, you had the best expert panel! Who needs Consumer Reports with that! I love my iPad. I love your snowmen!! I say every year I’m scaling back, but the girls love it to be over the top. I swear my house looks like Frankenmuth when I’m done! Do you remember Frankenmuth from your Michigan days??

  9. Since I am not working this year we are “making do” with no additions to the Christmas line up…today the Santa’s will go up, and the tree will be decorated on the weekend. Who will know???
I missed your post yesterday- I have a Sony and love it. I borrow both ebooks and hardcovers from the library. But, I really do want an iPad as I am a Mac girl. Maybe next year…

  11. I cut back a bit on decorations last year and big time this year. We have no huge gatherings planned this year since we had a big Thanksgiving here. When I got out all the decorations the day after Thanksgiving I only used about 25% of them. I think it looks good and am glad I’ll only have a small amount, compared to last year to put away.

  13. I need to pull out my holiday decorations this week too. Parents are arriving for month long visit on Monday and I would love to have the Xmas tree setup by then.
As I mentioned yesterday, I love my iPad. Yup. Love Love Love it.
Typically when we have a BIG ticket item on our wishlist we ask for gift card for the particular store. When I wanted an iTouch several years ago I got $200 in gift cards from the Apple Store which greatly reduced the final cost. My daughter actually asked for Gift cards for her graduation AND her birthday before she was able to afford her Mac Book Pro. She didn’t ask for cash because she knew she would spend it and she knew we had problems with the cash thing, but GCs were acceptable and the end result was the same.
BTW: I love your counters. I think I mentioned it before when you were remodeling but I do so love your counters. 🙂

  15. I only have a few things out so far, my christmas quilts are ready to be put out. But I just got word that my father will be on his own, so now I”m scrambling to buy a plane ticket and a place for my dog while I’m away……7 hours for dishes, no way! Pull out a fabulous table cloth and napkins.

  17. Nicole, put out enough decorations to remind you of wonderful past Christmas’ but not so much that it is a pain. ;0
I love the Christmas tree, lights, and music. Those all keep me sewing away…it’s my version of a Christmas sweatshop with one elf working away….

  19. It’s funny, I got my Kindle about a year ago I think, and I adore it, but all of a sudden, my husband started going to the bookstore quite regularly and I went with him the past couple of times, and I actually now am buying real books again. I realized I missed going to the bookstore and touching books and reading the first couple of pages and picking one or two, I guess that’s the bookworm in me feeling that way. If you get a Kindle though, you will love it.

  21. iPad is a great alternative. You can sign up for Kindle for iPad, and download Kindle books to that. You can probably access Nook books as well. And the iPad is in color & makes it look like you are actually “turning” the pages when you read.

  23. Nicole, I love real books so do not have a Kindle. My 2nd son is an avid reader, a book a day boy, so he chose a Sony after much research. He loves it and downloads free sets of books from his favourite authors. Quite a few of these books are hard to acquire or out of print so he is able to read them this way. But, I must mention, if he loves a book he has read on his Sony and it is available he then buys it for his library. Our house is full of bookcases and books. I rread on blogland recently a quote: ‘A house without books is like a home without windows’, how true!

  25. Yes again, but I thought I would share what we do for Christmas. So you don’t think we are too, too strange, think about weddings, 21st birthdays, yearly birthdays etc..do we start decorating a month before. Now we have everything organised (mentally at least) and then around the 23rd we start to decorate for Christmas Day and the Christmas period. So in short, in Advent we prepare, then from Christmas Day we party. We have done this for so, so long now and we like it this way!

  27. Playing catch-up here as I’ve been snowed under finishing the quilt top for DS1 as you know.
No decorating here yet but have been looking at photos of Christmas Past with the thought of simplifying. Had the tragic experience of metal fatigue and a branch breaking off of our ancient tree last year and am not looking forward to using it again this year.
    Your candle is so cute!
I’m considering using ornaments from my grandmother’s tree and from my parents’ tree to adorn the dining room not so simply. Stay tuned!
    Hugs!
