Consequences

Old man looking out window

This is kind of a personal post, so if you aren't into that, feel free to come back in a day or so when I have other content.

I am still with my dad.  It turns out his issue with his eyes is quite serious.

Six or seven months ago, he noticed his vision was getting worse.  He is an avid reader (just like me) and noticed he needed stronger magnification to see the words on the page.  He went from a 2.5 magnification to a 3.0.  The drugstore didn't carry anything stronger, so when the 3.0s no longer worked he was able to order 4.0 magnification glasses from Amazon.  Then he tried 5.0.  Then 6.0.  And then he couldn't read at all anymore.

He couldn't get in to see the eye doctor from March to May due to COVID-19.  Finally, in May his medical center started seeing patients with other issues again, and he called for an appointment.  They were backlogged, so he had to wait nearly two months to see the doctor.

As you know, I took him in yesterday, thinking he just needed a new pair of glasses.  Nope.  It turns out he has a condition called "wet" macular degeneration of the retina.  The good news it is treatable.  If you get in as soon as possible for treatment.  The bad news is he has lost months waiting to be able to see an eye doctor for a diagnosis and treatment.  Now the situation is urgent.  The hope is that he has not lost so much of his eyesight that the condition can't be reversed.  And if it can be improved, how much after all the delay?

After two and half hours with the ophthalmologist yesterday, she referred him to a retinal specialist.  She put the call in herself, saying he needed attention urgently, ASAP.  The specialist is seeing him today at noon.  The treatment is a series of injections into his eyeball, with the hope that the medication will reduce the fluid in the blood vessels of his eye and reverse some of the damage that has been done.

Reading has been his primary source of entertainment, particularly since my mother passed away and he is on his own.  He has stacks of books next to the chair where he sits.  They have been gathering dust for the past few months, much to all our concern.  We are all praying that the treatments will be successful and he will be able to enjoy his favorite pastime again.

He is 94.  I love him with all my heart.  Hearing him say "I hope I won't go blind" just about did me in.  Any good thoughts you can send his way will be appreciated more than I can say.

  4. My heart goes out to you and your father Nichole. I pray the treatments
Stop the vision loss and possibly restore some vision. My father had the dry kind and not anything to help at that time. He had to
Surrender his drivers license and therefore his independence. My mother
Didn’t drive so both were affected. Very sad day. Hoping your father
    Responds to treatment.

  19. My best wishes to your Dad. Having been an avid reader all my life I know how important this activity is. My sister has been having the injections for a few years now and they seem to help somewhat and do slow the progression of the disease.

  22. Hi, I read your blog and have never posted, but I wanted to offer perceptions of a friend’s experience with WMD. He too had a bit of delay in diagnosis and treatment, however his results have restored some vision and maintained vision at the level. On another note he’s mentioned that the eye injections were not as bad as he imagined. He did say the first one was hard to think about, because it was new. So keeping thoughts of success.

  25. My heart goes out to you, as does my thoughts and prayers. I am wishing that these injections bring his sight back. In the meantime, you might think about audiobooks to help him get his reading fix. I actually like some audiobooks better than reading myself because of the fun accent or dramatic reading.

  28. Sorry to hear about your dad’s vision. I have an 80 yr old friend who has this same condition. She goes for monthly injections in her eyes and is still a very prolific quilt maker and reader. Her mother went blind and she was so afraid of this happening to her. She has been having these injections for several years and it is keeping her condition from worsening.

  31. My dad had the same eye issue. The injections were a huge help, and he didn’t mind getting the injections at all. His retinal specialist was amazing, and great at communicating with both my dad and me.
Maybe getting him set up with audio books would be helpful? I know that there are many free options available. My husbands grandfather died at 97 years of age, and enjoyed listening to books his last few years when his vision wasn’t so great anymore. Best of luck to you!

  37. My mother and older brother had problems with WMD. Mom just sadly progressed to not watching (listening) to TV or reading. However, my brother not only reads a great deal, he is a creative writer. He has an IPad reader that he can communicate with, it enlarges the print from newspapers, books and magazines so he can continue with reading and writing in a deep and meaningful way. He inputs and gets output from the reader function by voice on the Ipad, and this from a person minimally into computers. I know he has had shots but don’t know about the experience or frequency. Please keep us up to speed with your Dad’s progress. My brother lives in Santa Cruz so I could put you in touch if needed. He’s the first person I’m calling if needed although I have been told I have no signs of this vision thief.

  49. Thank goodness for comment sections! I am so glad people are speaking up with their experiences. And I’m also sad to hear this was not an “essential” medical emergency. I will pray for you all.

  55. My heart was breaking for you and your Dad as I read your post. In the last years of my Dad’s life, he lost much of his vision from glaucoma. Audio books were a great help and, at that time, the machine and a huge catalog of books and periodicals was available, all free of charge, through an association that worked with the visually impaired. Keeping you and your Dad in my thoughts and prayers that he regains some of his sight. I know you will keep us all posted and take care of yourself! Sending you virtual hugs!!

  58. I have something called BRVO–branch retinal vein occulsion and I get shots in my eye. Basically I have a leaky vein in my eye. I was having blurry vision in my eye a year ago and was sent to a retinal specialist. The first shot was scary–heck–a SHOT IN MY EYE! I started out getting a shot once a month and now it’s every 2 months. Can’t be healed so I will get shots forever–well as long as I’m alive–and I’m 74 so it might be for a long time. The shots aren’t terrible after the first one and they numb you up really well. Hope all goes well with your Dad!Hugs for both of you.

  61. I’m so sorry. We have dealt with vision loss in the parents so check out “That All May Read”, a national free service for the blind – legally blind which your dad’s doctors can certify. At the time our parents used it, veterans book requests go to the head of the line. Both audio and braille books are available. They make it as easy as possible with the mailing of materials.

  67. My WMD was diagnosed just before lockdown started. The retinologist cleared some of his appointment during this time but sees all WMD because it is vital. When he gets new referrals he sees them within a week. Makes for some long days for him and sometimes for all the scheduled patients. I showed improvement after three injections. I am so greatfull.

  76. I knew your readers would respond & they sound very positive! I’ll add that my husband ‘knew’ WMD was a good possibility because his dad had it. Sure enough, he realized almost immediately what was happening. He has Eylea shots in the eye every 3 months. We also have a 96-year old friend who has been getting the shots in both eyes for several years. Both she & my husband are avid readers & use Kindles with adjustable size text. My father-in-law used the audio books & reading material like magazines available to legally blind people. They were quick & easy to order & return. Stay well.

  79. Im so sorry your dad is going through this. Your dad’s swift visual problem was an emergency – he should have been seen! I experienced wavy vision and my Dr. got me in to see the retina specialist right away. I have a different issue, but received a shot in my eye which surprisingly didn’t hurt. Things got a little better, but not much. I had a shot every month with some improvement. My Dr. decided it was time to change medications and had to get permission to try a new one – it worked! Much better now, but I’ll still need more shots. Don’t give up – as a reader and quilter, I was distraught and it’s taken awhile, but I’m much better. Incidentally, help him use lots of art. tears on the day of the shot and a few days later – it helps. Good luck to both of you.

  82. I am so sorry this is happening. I can think of a couple of things that could help. I’m thinking audiobooks but I’m wondering if his eyesight is so poor that he couldn’t see the keys on a tablet in order to get the book started. Another thought is to contact the local senior agencies and possibly some churches and see if they have a program where they can send somebody out to read to him. Check with his local library for ideas as well. Good luck and give him a hug for me.

  85. My heart goes out to you. We have a dear friend in her 80’s with this type of macular degeneration she has also had the injections in the eyeball. She is also a big reader. At this point she’s no longer able to read. She’s been using audio books via a program from the state but hasn’t even had those since March due to Covid and shutdowns…….

  88. That is so sad! Poor guy. Wet macular degeneration is a very common condition and treatable, but as you say, better when caught earlier. I hope the Avastin injections help. We see lots of older folks with macular degeneration, and my MIL had it too, but took medication and had regular treatments. She had dry macular degeneration. Audiobooks?

  103. I m sorry to hear about your Dad. Hubby had shots in his eyes for a different condition. The good thing was the shots didn’t hurt. They worked for him until he could get surgery. Hope they help your Dad. No apologies about this type of post.

  109. Nicole, we will be praying that the injections work and in the meantime he can listen to audio books and that will help him along with having you there with him keep him calmer. Don’t want anything to cause his blood pressure to come up. I am sending you a big hug.

  115. So sorry to hear about your Dad”s vision problems. I never experienced dry macular degeneration. so I started out with wet MD , and was fortunate to start my injections immediately. I have been receiving injections for 8 years, once a month. I hope your Dad has good results with his injections.

  118. Heartbreaking news. Praying for a good outcome. Has anyone suggested audible books?
Just a thought while waiting to see if the treatments are helpful.

  121. As an avid reader myself, I can relate to your dad’s fears. If all else fails, how about books on tape? I first heard about a friend using it instead of the radio on long car trips. Keep safe, and have faith all will be well.

  124. Will be thinking of you and your Dad. I know they can do a lot these days for macular, and pray that it’s effective and restores your father back to a better normal. Sending hugs to you both!

  127. I am sending blessings your way for preserving your Dad’s vision.
In the meantime could you try one of the audible options to listen to the stories he loves? Many Libraries offer recorded stories for free.
Wishing you all the best on this journey.

  130. Hi– I just stumbled across your blog and as luck would have it, my Mom is suffering from the same eye condition. She is 91 and just had her second shot this week. Her eye Dr was thrilled with the improvement from the first shot so we are very hopeful she continues to progress well. Reading the newspaper was a huge part of her daily routine so hopefully her vision improves well enough to resume that.
I look forward to updates on your father’s improvement! Thanks for sharing.
