Courthouse Steps — 7 Blocks to Go

IMG_4883

I am almost finished with these Courthouse Steps blocks. I have completed 74 and need a total of 81.  Honestly, I have probably made more than 74, because I keep remaking some of the books that have colors I don't like so much.  When I first started making the blocks, I used a bright orange/rust color that just doesn't gel with the softer golds, tans, browns, blacks, greens and russets.  So I have been taking those blocks down and re-making the ones I can without the bright rust fabric.  There were a few blocks with a certain strident shade of gold that had to go as well.  Maybe I am over-thinking it, but those colors just jangled my nerves so they had to be removed.

I tell you, I will be glad to get this one together.  It takes me forever to construct a block, and nearly as long to choose the five fabrics that will be in each one.  My sewing room is complete chaos, because the only way I can operate is to see ALL the strips at one time.

Have you heard about the latest Moda challenge/sew along?  It is to make a quilt using the Double T block, use exclusively Betsy Chutchian fabrics, and get the top done and posted to Instagram by March 31.  There will be winner/s and cool prizes are promised.  I have a fat quarter bundle of Betsy's Rachel Remembered collection, and am sorely tempted to join in.  Check out the details here.

Are any of you thinking of doing this sew along?  The five week turn around is pretty tight, but what do you think?

  1. Courthouse Steps is looking good! Well done on having so many blocks finished.
If the blocks you’re not using look good together, perhaps they could become a smalll quilt or table runner?
No sew-along for me as I lack the energy. Fun idea, though. 🙂
    Hugs!

  4. Your step blocks look great and almost finished ! I was tempted yesterday when I read the post BUT I don’t have more than scraps of Betsy fabric and I am on a mission to finish projects right now. So far so good but this one really did tempt me to go off track. I still have 4 more things in process.

  7. Your courthouse steps quilt looks great! How do you find the time, I thought you worked too! :o) I printed the pattern for the Double T block but won’t be doing the challenge. I’ve always wanted to make a quilt with the Double T block, but I don’t have Betsy’s fabrics and will have two quilts to quilt for church come this Sunday, so won’t have the time. I do have a queston for you though…I got a gift card for Christmas and was thinking of getting some Bloc-Loc rulers. What sizes do you think are the most valuable? Thanks!

  10. I’m tempted to do the Double T Moda challenge but I’m still working on Blockheads! Almost there. Did block 40 (Lisa Bongean’s alternate – 73 pieces in one block!) last night. I’m doing that with 2 Minnick & Simpson layer cakes so feel your pain about fabric laying out! There is a light at the end of our tunnels 🙂

  13. I love this quilt you are making. When I read about the Sew Along I wondered if you would be doing it. I have no Betsy fabric and cannot purchase anything right now so will not be doing it but boy was I tempted!

  16. The Courthouse Steps is looking good! Your pinwheel tesselations runner too! And I’m comforted to hear that I am not the only one for whom making the fabric selections for each and every block is so time consuming (but pleasurable, of course). The results are worth it!

  19. I like the block color choices on your wall. This quilt looks so warm & cozy! All of the block re-making will be worth it when you’re snuggled up under it this the Fall reading a good book!

  22. I’m not as choosy, but yes it’s very time consuming to pick out that many fabrics for each block! They look great, dynamic and warm.
I saw the picture on the Moda blog but, having just done a swap, am not ready to jump in. The blocks look great in her fabrics!

  25. Your Courthouse Steps quilt look great. Totlly understandable about making some blocks again I normally do it to because a block might look great in your mind but not so good when you really made it. Did happen to me with the Farmer’s Wife quilt and Tula Pink sampler a lot.
I don’t have any of Betsy fabrics but I hope the next designer will be someone I have fabrics from.
