Cupcake

I’d like to introduce you to my version of Cupcake, the Carrie Nelson Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company pattern Lisa and I were given when we took Carrie’s class at The Buggy Barn this August.  Carrie’s version was blue where mine is brown.  The pattern is not released yet, but my understanding is that when it is published, it will be called Drumbeat.  Lisa is working on her quilt as well, and maybe if we are lucky she will post some pictures when she gets back from her current retreat.

This quilt piecing was super easy.  Nine patches and quarter square triangles was all there was to it!  In addition there is an interesting border that makes the blocks appear to float.

I’m not showing the entire quilt for a couple of reasons.  First, as I mentioned the pattern has not yet been published, and Carrie asked us to hold off showing our whole tops until it is.  Second, I don’t have the entire top pieced yet!  I am so close, really.  I decided to take a picture and post about it while the light is still good.  There are 17 rows, and I have 15 of them together.  I am putting it together in three big sections, and have two sections sewn together at the moment.  I hope to finish it tonight and drop it off at my quilters later this week.  Any suggestions as to quilting designs?  Wouldn’t it be funny if I found one that was cupcakes?

The quilt top is made up of so many different fabrics, I lost count.  Four or five dozen, I bet.  Maybe more!  We were given a quilt kit that the good folks at Buggy Barn made up for us.  There were lots of pinks and burgundies, and some greens I think.  The quarter square triangles were all supposed to be in tan and robin’s egg blue.  I just wasn’t feeling the blue, so I substituted a lot of browns instead.  Many of the browns I chose were from the Madeira collection by Moda.  And of course, I kept adding in more rose and burgundy and green!

Here is a glimpse of the border.

  1. Great post!!! Love the quilt. My favorite part is when you said there are so many fabrics you lost count. Good for you. I have a scrap basket that all my leftovers get tossed in at the end of my quilt counter. I keep saying I’m going to make a quilt out of just those one day… You inspire me…

  3. Oh my word, Nicole – this is just BEAUTIFUL! I can’t wait to see what mine looks like with the blues! This is going to be my first project at retreat since it’s so close to done. Hopefully I will have a photo to share when I return on Sunday!
I found the greatest cupcake fabric (in my stash, even!) to use to make a block with a label to put on the back!

  5. Another true beauty! I love your version. BTW, the pattern, Drumbeat, has been published so you can feel free to show the entire quilt.

  13. Nicole I love it, love it, love it! I am absolutely over the top with the brown. I saw the pattern on a website, can’t remember whose store it was, but they said it was a Market release. So you can show us the whole quilt whenever you’re ready. It truly takes my breath away. Wish I could see it in person.

  19. I love the look of this quilt! Your colors are “just right”. Now you have me pining for another Ms Rosie’s pattern, lol. And that means more fabric! lol
