Designer Mystery 2023-All But Borders

Designer Mystery 23 all but borders
It's great to see this quilt taking shape on the design wall. I have made the lattices that separate the rows but haven't attached them all yet. I have the units for the pieced sides, top and bottom borders all made and ready to piece and attach. After that, the last step is to attach solid borders all around in the primary blue fabric.

The quilt is kind of a weird shape, being so long compared to the width. I will get around that by placing it crossways on my bed. I'd rather have the side overhang than extra room at the head and foot of the bed anyway.

I think I should finish this up today!

How do you all feel about "mystery" quilts? I would actually rather know what I am getting into from the start. This one wasn't much of a mystery because you were encouraged to start the finishing kit and make the block surrounds each month so as not to have a monumental job of finishing the quilt after making all the blocks. I have to say, that worked really well for me.

Can you imagine making 12 blocks and then getting the finishing kit? Surprise, now you have twice as much work to do to finish the quilt top.  How do you like that mystery? No thanks.

  1. This is a beautiful top. Kudos to you for the finish.
I’m not a fan of mystery quilts. I want to know what I’m dumping my money into. There are a couple designers that do an excellent job, and I usually consider following their mysteries. But in the end, I mostly watch from the sidelines. I have plenty of quilt ideas that I know will be winners.

  4. I don’t mind doing mystery quilts if I know the designer. The huge Moda Blockheads I don’t care for because I worry about having enough fabric, and the designers have differing abilities to make blocks. Like you, on those I have either modified or substituted. That’s interesting about doing the finishing pattern as you go along. Pat Sloan has started doing that with hers.

  7. I’m curious..how do you accomplish so much quilting in a day? Are you a very fast quilter or do you spend from sun-up to sundown quilting (LOL). I can’t accomplish nearly as much as you do and I wonder do you have any secret tips to speed me up? I seriously admire your work and I want to complete as many quilts as you do plus read, write book reviews, do a podcast, cook, write your blog and spend time with your family, especially your beautiful granddaughter. Send us slowpokes some suggestions please!

  13. I started a mystery quilt once and never finished it. I did not like my fabric selection once I got a feel of where the pattern was going. It’s in a box somewhere in my quilting room!

  16. I’ve never done a mystery quilt, but I’ve planned a couple for my small quilt group. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and I think most finished the quilts. This quilt is gorgeous!

  19. I’ve only done one mystery quilt, but actually ‘cheated’ & went online for all of the directions ahead of time. It wasn’t my worst but wasn’t my favorite finish either. You’ve done a great job & the end is definitely in sight! Happy weekend!

  22. I don’t like the idea of making a mystery quilt because I like to know ahead what the quilt will look like. I guess I’m not adventurous.

  25. I used to create mystery quilts. I did several geared toward guilds using them as fund raisers. (I had a line of quilt patterns that sold nationally years ago. The Mystery quilts were a small part of that series.)
Now, absolutely do not make anything where I do not know everything in advance. And now I only do simpler, one block designs.
(Have not been sewing at all this summer. Very busy gardening!)
But I have to say, your current quilt is really lovely. The use of color and the setting makes it tremendous. I could see myself doing this quilt as a scrap one block using the Star/4-patch block in the upper left corner of your quilt.
Also, just getting ready to start “A Talent for Murder” by Peter Swanson. Yes, I read “A Kind Worth Killing” and “A Kind Worth Saving” first. I am reading series this week while recovering from a badly bruised rib. For anyone else that read your review – I recommend reading all three in order.

  28. I am not a fan of mystery quilts. In the past, I have ordered kit kit, then only to resell it!
Right now, I am into LBQ and her 2 YouTube series. I am loving
watching her hand and machine sew. Great tips too. I am considering the upcoming ew along starting Sept. 2, but haven’t
    bought a kit yet!
I do admire you for all you get sewn and look forward to your
    posts.

  34. I absolute love the mystery quilts by Modern Quilt Studio and do those! They just started offering them in 2023, and they’ve done 4 so far. The teachers are the nicest wife-husband duo, and their accompanying videos are amazingly helpful and informative. I’ve learned so much about color and fabric selection from their mystery quiltalongs, which are more like mini classes. I’ve also done one other mystery by a different quilt duo (this was in 2022) and was truly mad about it. The blocks were pretty complex, but the “setting” was to sew the 12 blocks together in a 3×4 grid. So, all that work each month, but it only made a small quilt! I was sooo irritated! They also provided very inefficient cutting and piecing directions. I modified the directions and changed the entire layout (added an alternate block) to make a larger quilt. It came out great, but I will be sticking with mysteries by MQS and not try others!

  37. This is a stunningly beautiful quilt! I admire how much quilting you have accomplished this summer- so many beautiful items 🙂
I did took an all day Mystery Quilt Class at the Road2CA quilt show about 10 years ago. My quilt was a disaster and I never finished it 🙁
That was my one and only mystery quilt.
I so enjoy seeing all of your beautiful quilt projects and your book reviews!
