Dilemma, Dilemma

I know I promised to show you what's up on the design wall, but that is still a major blank space.

I want to start a new project.  Something for a loved one who needs a quilt to comfort and sustain her on a difficult journey.  Not a huge bed sized quilt, but a nap quilt she can carry around the house.  Her living room has a dark red couch and two light blue upholstered chairs.

I have always wanted to do Bonnie Blue's Second Hand Clothes pattern (honestly, can you believe I have never made that?).  So I pulled some great reds, some nice blues and a ton of rich brown prints that have both red and blue in them.  The idea was to go with her living room colors and be all color coordinated.  Nice and safe, and a bit boring.

And then I pulled out these Kim Diehl fabrics in dark red, sage green, teal and rust.  I could toss in some brown for one more color and have a beautiful quilt.  And it would still look stunning on the back of her dark red couch.  People on difficult journeys need more color, don't you agree?

After spending about two hours pulling reds, light blues and browns, I think I am going in a different direction.  Something about the Second Hand Clothes pattern calls for not just merely scrappy, but more colors in the mix.

Dear me, you should see my sewing room.  All tidied up last week and now looks like a cyclone hit it!  But I am on to something and will persevere!  Nobody ever said creativity was neat.

Hope you all had a lovely Easter Sunday.  We had a family brunch and it was so terrific to have everyone together!  And those who couldn't be there were much missed.

  1. Oooh, I’d never seen the Second Hand Clothes quilt … I love it … it looks so complex but I can see that it’d be so easy to piece. And I always love quilts with some nice big sections for some fancier quilting. Another quilt to add to my evergrowing list of quilts to be made.

  4. This is going to be gorgeous! I’d love to pull out my new Kim Diehl fabrics and sew along with you, but I’m working on a custom quilt for a cousin and I have to get that done. Second Hand Clothes goes together really quickly.

  13. I’m sure which ever fabrics you choose, the recipient will treasure her quilt! The times I’ve made comfort quilts have always been the most rewarding. It’s a labor of love & your’s will be perfect!

  16. This is one of my favorite Red Crinoline quilts. I got to see the remake in blue and browns and it put me over the top. Paula said that they worked the remake to appear as if the center radiated out to the edges by putting lighter tones in the center. I thought it was a great idea and immediately thought it would feel like the heart of the quilt. Good luck with your version! I’m still collecting fabrics!

  19. Love the pattern and these delicious fabrics! Yes, the more happy colors, the better for the look of the quilt and the cheerful factor, too.
    Wishing your loved one well.

  22. Love all your fabric choices for this great-looking quilt. I have the pattern, but haven’t made it yet, just waiting for the right fabrics. I’ve just ordered some Kim Diehl fabrics from her new collection, and this could be the start. Watching you put your pattern together will be the inspiration I need to get started. A few bright colours will definitely make this quilt pop.

  25. I haven’t looked closely at that pattern before, but I really like it. I know it is popular, and there’s a reason why. Great one for showcasing some larger cuts of fabric. I hope your friend is doing well enough and will continue to improve. I know she will cherish this quilt of love.

  28. Yes, yes more color is fun and will be a treat for the recipient. It is worth tearing up the sewing room when we have major decisions such as these to make! Can’t wait to see your progress. I make scrap quilts in between other necessary bday, wedding, baby quilts. This one will have to go on my list to make!

  37. Love the pattern. What about adding an unexpected color for a bit of surprise? An orange? A lime? I love your blog. I get to “sew” along with you while I am without a sewing machine these 6 months. Thanks!
