Do-Over

I needed a do-over for my ModaBlockheads block #9.  I just wasn't happy with my construction of the first one.  So this version (credit to Lissa Alexander) is the eight-inch size, and I am much happier with it.  The scrappy center is adorable.

I liked it so much I did another one in a six-inch size.

I am satisfied with how this one came out too.  The plan is for all my six-inch blocks to be set on the diagonal, so I think the two blocks will be quite different from one another.

We had a chatty Facetime visit with our son Ahren yesterday. He was telling us how Ireland is handling the coronavirus scare. He is the IT engineer for a Swedish bank in Dublin.  He says the company moved all the employees around and split them up between two floors of their Dublin high rise building.  That way, the programmers, IT people, and software engineers will be all split up and if one floor of employees get sick and sent home the whole computer system of the company won't shut down since the other half of the computer staff will be on another (hopefully) unaffected floor.  He has taken to wearing food prep gloves when he takes the bus back and forth to work.  (Which must be a great look).  He wipes everything down with anti-bacterial wipes.  He bought masks to wear but hasn't used them yet.  He was told the masks help others if you are sick and wear one, but it isn't really a preventative measure to protect the wearer from illness.  So far, 90 Irish citizens have contracted the virus.  However, as a precaution, the head of their government, the Taoiseach (pronounced Tee-sha) Leo Varadkar has shut down all the schools, colleges and daycare centers.

We found a fantastic price on airline tickets to Ireland online yesterday, for September.  We are afraid to buy them in case this situation is still going on in the fall.  Couldn't be, right?

On a personal note, I am still working my way through an entire sour cream pound cake since there isn't much else to do.  If anyone is interested in joining me, here is a link to the recipe:

  1. Do you think that the recipe could be used in something different than a fluted tube pan?
Everything that I have had scheduled to do has been cancelled so I am going to have a lot of time on my hands. . . and the stores are being stripped like we are in a depression. . .so I guess I should start baking & sewing.
I hope this situation does not last into the fall. . .with as crazy as people are getting here on the East Coast we could end up in Martial law.

  4. The new blocks are great, really like them. Your chat with Ahren must have been reassuring. The virus is there but his age group and personal practices are in his favor, although he’s far from family. One of my sons is an IT engineer for a (mortgage) bank here in DFW. Most of their work is contracted out to India so it will be interesting to see how that goes. My son says IT people there are very well college educated. Hope you will be able to visit in September, might be a good month before Ireland moves into Winter.

  7. That scrappy center looks great! What is with the whole toilet paper shortage??? We saw that Amazon has it, but at outrageous prices! It sounds like Ahren’s prepared & that his employer has a smart plan in place. Take care, everyone!

  10. I certainly hope this situation is over well before September! My husband and I are supposed to be going on a cruise to the Greek islands in late April but I am not counting on it taking place.

  16. I love your blocks, these will be great quilts. At least quilters/crafters have lots to keep their hands busy to fill the home time. Baking is a great idea, but I would be the one to eat it all!

  19. Great blocks! I am busy taking care of a pan of brownies here. No room/time for pound cake right now. You’re on your own!
