Double Nine Patch Comes Home

IMG_5428

This is another favorite spot for me to sit.  Not so much in the heat of the day, but it sure is lovely early in the morning or in the evening.  On the love seat you can see my new Double Nine Patch quilt.  Gosh, it certainly did surprise me, how much I love that quilt!  For the last fifteen years or so I haven't decorated much with blues, but I am thinking that may need to change.

This is another shot of the quilt, a bit closer in:

Doesn't the variety of tones of the background fabrics add textural interest?  Something to keep in mind.  The fabrics were mostly from a kit I purchased some years back and never used.  I pulled them out for this project and they were perfect.

Here is a close up of the quilting.  It is a simple all over/edge to edge design, but it suits the quilt I think.  The swirly design is a nice counterpoint to the squares in the piecing.  Honestly, most of the time I am happy not to pay for custom quilting.  How about you?  Do you spring for the custom job once in a while or do you mostly stick to all over digital designs?

Happy 4th of July everyone!  And belated Happy Canada Day too.

  1. Your quilt is beautiful. It wouldn’t have near the appeal if you had used plain white squares instead of all the different neutrals. Blue is my favorite color, and I have quite a collection that I have not used. Now I know what to do with them.

  4. I love your double nine patch quilt and the beautiful border fabric you chose for your quilt. Do you know the name of the border fabric? Thank you for blogging…I love reading your blog and seeing the beautiful quilts you are working on and have created. Jane

  7. If the quilt is a “block” quilt, meaning it’s made with the same blocks, I usually go with an edge to edge pattern. I request custom whenever the blocks are different or it is an applique.

  10. What a lovely quilt and the many fabrics in use makes it sing! Isn’t this layout also called Single Irish Chain?
I pay for quilting for my large quilts as my wee sewing room and my shoulders don’t like the effort it takes to quilt them myself.
    Hugs!

  13. This is so beautiful! You’re right, the variety of blues and white do help make this quilt special. I think the quilting is perfect for it. A more showy quilting design would take away from the beautiful simplicity of the nine patch.

  19. You have made so many beautiful quilts, but this is one of my favorites. So simple, but so striking. I have a longarm, so don’t have to pay for custom quilting and it’s been a very long time since I’ve custom quilted anything. My quilts are happy with an all over design! I don’t have a computerized machine, so most anything I do is freehand, except for my Baptist Fan and Clamshell stylus guided template designs. This quilt is gorgeous.

  31. Beautiful quilt and a lovely place to sit and admire it too! I always pick meander for my quilts just because I like the way it puckers up my quilts after I wash them. Then I found out Country Sampler in Spring Green always uses meander on their quilts and knew why I loved them all! They all look so old and crinkly. I do know lots of long arm quilters get bored doing the meander. Your quilt is another one going on my “to do” list. Have a great day Nicole!

  34. I usually pick all over digital designs for my quilts. My long arm quilter has so many to choose from. I can go modern or more traditional depending on the quilt. So much cheaper too!

  40. Beautiful quilt, Nicole! I like seeing the different background prints and what they do for the quilt. We went camping at a Provincial Park for the Canada Day weekend. The weather was cold and rainy but it was great family time. Happy 4th!

  43. Nine-patch is my favorite block but, besides that, your fabrics work so well together! My long arm quilter doesn’t use a computerized machine, so even her all-over designs are done ‘custom’. Recently, I’ve had her do straight-line quilting on a few of my quilts & if you like a ‘crinkly’ look after washing, they do the trick!

  46. Very pretty, Nicole! I don’t work with blue often but like the variety of shades available! I’ve only had custom quilting done a few times for special projects that I wanted to highlight. It’s expensive but worth it if you know what you want! Hope you are far from the fires.

  49. Beautiful quilt and I love the different low volumes it sure adds interest.
Since I quilt all my quilts myyself on my domestic sewing machine it’s most of the time an all over pattern it’s just the easiest way for me.

  52. 1) Still in love with your front porch.
    2) Love that quilt!
    3) I usually go with the digital all over design.
Back to the porch: still in love with it!

  55. I would love to pay for a custom design but it seems like all the good custom design long arm quilters are more interested in working for fabric and pattern designers. I’m on several lists and am thrilled if I get 3 quilts custom quilted a year. I piece too many quilts to wait around for custom jobs so the majority of my quilts are not custom. Your finished quilt is a beauty, and the quilting a perfect match. I would love a quiet cool spot for drinking my morning coffee, a must have in my next home. Happy 4th of July, hope you have something fun planned with the family,

  58. Love how your quilt turned out, just beautiful! I love blues but decorate with them either as I tend to gravitate toward warm, earthy tones. Lately though I’ve been sprinkling a little blue into my house and like the small contrast and pops of color it gives.

  67. Love the blue and cream! I have some of those colors in my stash too for a quilt some day! I have a longarm and usually do edge to edge. Some custom gets to be too much quilting for what I’m going to use the quilt for. Have a safe and happy 4th of July! Stay cool!
