Everybody Loves a Nine Patch Block

IMG_3259

Who doesn't love a little nine patch block?  These are 3 1/2 inches unfinished and will surround an appliqué block.  I got the idea from a new book I purchased with some of that birthday bounty that came my way.

Simple Friendships, a collaboration by Kim Diehl and Jo Morton.  Now, you sure can't go wrong with either of those designers, and you know a book authored by the two of them is going to be sensational.  And it is!  The little project I want to make is a variation on one of Kim's quilts in the book.

My idea is to just make one of the appliqué blocks, and surround it with two rows of the little nine patch blocks.  I will end up with a small table topper that will be perfect in my kitchen with a fall candle on top of it.  I am guessing it will end up about 24 inches square.  Just in time for fall, right?

Thanks for all the good wishes expressed for my husband's recovery from total knee replacement surgery.   He appreciated all your kind thoughts and encouragement.  A common theme in the comments was for him to follow his doctor's orders.  I think he listened, as he originally only asked for one week off work (!!!), and now has put in a request for an additional week off to recover.  His leg is very swollen and keeping it elevated and iced is really the best thing.

  1. Love your wee 9 Patch blocks and your ideas for this new project! The fabrics suit to a T, too!
Methinks your sweet DH will actually need 2 or more weeks recovery time befor he can drive comfortably.

  10. You’re right, who doesn’t love a nine-patch? Your idea sounds fantastic. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when completed. Glad your husband is doing what the doctor said. It will make such a huge difference in his recovery. –Andrea

  13. What a great idea! I think you’re off to a good start and totally nailed the colors. Glad your husband is listening too, I have a friend who always takes twice as long to heal because she doesn’t follow doctors orders.

  16. When I had my knee replacement the PT told me that ice will be my new friend! I was off work for 5 weeks so I think two weeks is very optimistic! Good luck to him. The rehab is very hard so be patient! Love all of your quilts that you make and you provide me with way more inspiration than I can possibly ever do.
