Fall Colors

001
I had a bit of time in the sewing room yesterday and instead of working on finishing my Nantucket stars, I got side tracked with this pretty fall foliage fabric.  In fact, that is what it is called–"Foliage" by Moda.  It looks like I will be having a crowd for Thanksgiving dinner and it seemed to me that a new table topper may be in order.

I missed the past two months of Schnibbles, and really loved both patterns that were featured, Mercerie and Clover.  I think this fabric would be great for Clover, along with a nice neutral background to show off all those blacks, browns, reds, greens and golds.

Today is my free day to sew as long as I like, and I plan to make the most of it!  A little Nantucket, a little Clover, and who knows what I may end up with?

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and advice concerning my father in law's nocturnal wanderings.  Fortunately he does not have Alzheimers, rather a form of dementia called Primary Progressive Aphasia.  This is a condition that is very slow to progress, and affects the area of the brain that controls speech and language.  It started 30 years ago when we noticed he was speaking slowly and having trouble finding the words for things.  As it has progressed, he is now not able to speak much at all, and has trouble reading or following television or other activites involving language.  He is able to do many things, but has gotten more frail and is showing other signs of dementia, including getting day and night mixed up.  He has a caregiver who lives with him, and is there during the night.  We also have a system called Lifeline, which is a sophisticated mechanism that picks up unusual motion such as a fall and alerts the appropriate persons, whether or not he is able to push the panic button himself.  I was told today that this company is about to come out with a GPS device for the elderly, in case they are likely to wander off or fall somewhere other than their own premises.  Won't that be a godsend for those who need it?

  1. Love the fabrics and your wonderful creative energy! I look forward to seeing all you’ve made in the next 10 days as you are still the speed piecing wizardess!
Cheers for the many gadgets that keep our loved ones safer.
Off to the airport we go … or is it Up, Up and Away?!
    Hugs!

  3. Hi Nicole, Been following your recent experiences with your father-in-law and of course quilting. I understand the situation, however, was fortunate enough to have assisted care for mine. Hang in there, when they are gone it’s a void in your life. I want to start Nantucket, but my real “work” gets in the way :). Take care.

  5. WOW! I LOVE the idea of a sensor that will alert others if someone has fallen down. The world is changing so fast and sometimes in the best possible way!
Have fun sewing! You deserve it! Besides, company is coming….

  9. Love that foliage fabric! Was just looking at both those patterns thinking I wanted to make something and you went ahead and read my mind :). I hope they have human tracking chips when I get old as I just asked my husband to get one for me when I can’t remember things, although I think I’m there already!

  11. My grandmother had a similar dementia. Her language/speech was affected, then gradually her physical abilities. It is awful to imagine how she felt stuck in a body that didn’t work with memories and thoughts and no communication. In some ways it is fortunate that she was only very disabled for maybe 2 years, not 20, but still 76 is not a long life by today’s standards. My Mum is now 60 and recently retired and is doing everything possible to stave off dementia. She lives by the theory if you don’t use it you lose it, so keeps very active physically and mentally. I’m glad grandpa does have a carer and others to bear the workload with you. I hope you are getting a lot out of your relatively “free” week.
