I love this pattern. (Madeline, a Schnibbles pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.).
I love this fabric. (Rounenneries by French General for Moda).
I want to make this quilt, but I do not want a Schinbbles size quilt. I want a BIG quilt. Well, at least 70 inches or so square. But I don't want to make a ton of small Schnibble size blocks. So what does a gal with a feeble brain such as mine do to figure out how to expand the block size?
She of the Feeble Brain calls in her friends. I asked Thelma. She said she was on her way out the door to the Paducah Quilt Show, but could help me when she got back. I looked it up on the internet. Plenty of Sawtooth Star patterns, but how do I figure out the corner triangles that surround each Sawtooth block? I even considered buying EQ6, a soft ware program that quilters use to figure out stuff like this. $150. No, not now.
I took a deep breath and emailed the designer of the Schnibbles pattern, Miss Carrie Nelson herself. She laughed at me. Not because she is mean, but because the solution is so easy.
She said if I wanted she could go all Math-y on me, with nineteen digit equations. No thanks. You all know I couldn't handle that. I just want to know how to make the block bigger. So, she gave me a tip, and said I could share it with you. She sent me a PDF file, which she said she thinks she got off the Moda website ages ago. It has all the directions for cutting triangles to put around another block to expand the block size and give you an opportunity to add in all sorts of great fabric. If you would like me to email you the PDF file, let me know. I tried attaching it to my post, but it didn't work.
I easily expanded the size of my Sawtooth Star block, by copying the directions off of the Miss Rosie pattern Elizabeth, which has a nice 8" Sawtooth block in it. Yes, my pattern has a big bite taken out of it, courtesy of my dog Ozzie. He liked this pattern so much he wanted to eat it up. Good as shoes, don't you know?
Good lord, that is a gorgeous pattern. I cannot believe I have not made it yet. Would it not be amazing in Astor Manor by 3 Sisters for Moda? But I digress.
Here's the bottom line: If you have an 8" Sawtooth Star block, you need to cut squares 6 5/8" and cut them on the diagonal once to get your triangle surround units to make the Madeline inspired block.
Oh my gosh, I was so excited, before you know it, my cutting table was covered with all the patterns and instructions and rulers I needed to make these blocks. As you know, I love the Fit To Be Geese ruler and got busy making my flying geese units for the Sawtooth Star block.
All my block components were coming out perfectly, so I made a test block. It turned out totally stupid looking because I confused which units were "Sky" and which were "Geese" in my flying geese units.
Yes, it is an ugly block, but the dimensions are dead on perfect! Yay. So, I got serious and made my first real block.
Yes! It is Madeline, only bigger! I am going to be working on this quilt non-stop until it is done. I need this quilt as soon as possible. It could sell my house it is going to be that pretty.
Update: While I was working on making my expanded Madeline block, Sophie ate my Lush Buffy the Backside Slayer bar. I don't care. Figuring out how to make this block is worth a dry, scaly, bumpy behind.
She sure is trying to get that taste out of her mouth.

Nicole – This is going to be a beautiful quilt! Because I am computer-challenged, I am not able to open the PDF file. Would it be possible to show us the instructions?
Thanks for your expertise, your insight and your photos!

Oh Nicole, I love it! I have my Elizabeth almost ready to be a top in Rouenneries and I’ve also made my Madeline Schnibble…now I’m thinking I need to make a full size one too. You are such a good influence 🙂 do I really have to go to work today?

I am a devoted follower of yours and saw an earlier post you did on the Fit to be Geese ruler. As I’ve never been able to successfully make them, I decided to give the ruler a try.
IT WORKED!!! I think I love you even more than this ruler for opening up a whole new world to me…flying geese…I finally can make them. Thank you thank you thank you!

What a wonderful idea. I would love a “bigger” Madeline and am definitely not good at math. So you know that I am really looking forward to that new Schnibbles book, right? I love reading about all of your quilting adventures and I love Sophie’s adventures too. She is a “hoot”. However, I cannot open up the PDF file that Miss Rosie (Carrie) sent to you. For me it does not come across in PDF format. Could you email to me in PDF? I would so appreciate it. Many thanks and keep this blog coming.

Must. Make. This. Quilt. I love the snibbles patterns, but I’m not a snibbles-sized quiltmaker. Think Miss Rosie could do a great business just upsizing her own patterns, though come to think of it,she has done this with some patterns. I’m off to get the Elizabeth pattern and geese ruler and maybe more Rounneneries fabric, if I can find it. You are a great inspiration for my quilting; my pocketbook…not so much!

I’m making Madeline in Rounenneries too! I would love to make a bigger one, but alas, only have enough fabric for the small version (but I DO have a place to hang it). The big version will be scrumptious and, yes, it just may sell the house for you o:)
Too bad about the Buffy bar! I just found out that we have a Lush in Philadelphia, so I’ll be getting my own Buffy!

My FQ stack of Rounenneries has been sitting waiting for an inspiration. I should have figured it would be from you! This is awesome. Would you please email the PDF to me? Have a great day!

Nicole I would love the PDF file. I have a pattern that I’ve been trying to figure out the corners myself. Isn’t Madeline such a darling pattern? And I also have that gorgeous Elizabeth pattern. I saw it made up in Civil War prints and it was beautiful. I am collecting the fabrics for it.

That’s a true beauty of a star! No wonder you are inspired. The bite out of the pattern is hilarious. Go Ozzie!
Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville fame has an on-point setting instruction sheet that is a big help. It does include math, but also common sizes of setting triangles for common size blocks. Here’s the link: http://quiltville.com/onpointmath.shtml

Would you mind sending the PDF file to me, as well. Thank you!

Thank you for reminding me I have an Elizabeth pattern AND a stash of Astor Manor, just waiting to be used!!

I love your Madeline block! Looking forward to seeing your completed quilt. Good luck selling your house! I’d love to have a copy of the PDF file. Even though I’m not mathematically challenged with most things, triangles cause me issues!

Good Morning Nicole,
I cannot believe your blog title this morning – Figuring It Out. Would you believe I figured out out to retrieve the B/W quilt blog header on your blog. You never want to mess with the “high contrast” box on your control panel. I remembered to go back there and I canceled the “high contrast” thingee button and lots of my “right” colors came back to my blog headers and my kiddos web page that shows my daily grankiddo photos. Happy Day. I figured it out.
Additionally, I loved your idea of a larger Madeline. I have made several Monterey Medallions (Teri Atkinson) and I am a little “starred-out” presently. However, I love Madeline and I love your idea of enlarging it as well. However, I am guarding the remainder of my Rouenneries.
Am looking seriously at lots of new rulers for all the ideas in my head for quilts I don’t seem to be able to calculate for. I also dislike referring to sky and whatever for wild geese blocks – I just don’t get a mental picture for that. Fons and Porter do that all the time and I lose them. Teri A. gives almost every block a special little square that says for ONE BLOCK, cut: and she lists the # of squares and rectangles, etc. by size. I go nuts over some magazines that give so many measurements and special instrutions before starting the quilt, my brain just glazes over.
Thanks for the inspiration to “figure it out” as it was MY problem. But, as always thanks for your inspiring ideas for quilts. I always thought when you were looking for work, you really already had found your caling. Some quilty company needs to hire you for your ability to demonstrate a new fabric and ten different ways to use it. They would sell everything they could produce.
Best wishes,
Stephani

Well, since Madeline Rose is the name of my new grandbaby……
I love the way this looks. I think Miss Rosie has a new book called Schnibbles times 2 that has the Scnibble size & also the larger size. I also found a Little Foot ruler and a Fons & Porter ruler that will do the setting triangles for you. easy peasy. I hate math.

Hi Nicole,
I would love to have the PDF file you spoke about. I am working on and am just about finished with the Madeline table topper. I have used the Rounierries fabric as well, and absolutely love it. It would be fun to make the larger size block in a throw like you are talking about, for my daughter, as a surprise. Corrie(my daughter) absolutely fell in love with my Madeline table topper (both fabric AND pattern–thank you to Ms. Carrie Nelson’s inspiration) and I think my Corrie girl would be so pleased with a larger throw size quilt for her sofa. I will look forward to the PDF (no rush on that, Nicole, I will need to get the fabric first.) 🙂
Thank you!

Don’t you love when your hard work pays off? Your block turned out great! The Madeline was my favorite of all the Schnibbles I have made. I also love the Elizabeth pattern. I found out it will be in Carrie’s new book Spice of Life so I was happy I resisted picking up the pattern. I already have several patterns that are being reprinted in the book so when I get the book I’ll have them all under the same cover (so to say). Can’t wait to see your Madeline Progress.

Send me the PDF and any other help. I love watching your quilts come to life. Your blog is one of the first ones I go to each day. You have a great eye for pattern and fabric.
Good luck with the house selling…it is looking good.
