Flea Market Is Back on the Design Board

Flea Market Jan 24
With all the talk about Lori Holt projects yesterday I thought I had better get with the program and actually finish one. I brought Flea Market out and put it up on the design wall to see where I am with it. At this point, the next step is to put on a narrow dark brown containment border and a white containment border outside of that.

I had said I would probably just add my final border and call this quilt done even though the pattern calls for one more border of posy flowers before the final final border. However, after looking at all the LH fabric I have on hand, I think I had better use some of it up and make that additional border after all.

Posy blocks for Flea Market
I have to admit, they are pretty darn cute. However, they are quite fussy to make. Each block is made up of four quadrants. The seams must be pressed open and the four block units each squared up to 3". If you don't square up, they will be wonky, no matter how carefully you sew. I kind of hate making folded corner units. There I said it. The special rulers (Corner Clipper, Folded Corner etc) don't work that well for me. I am certainly not about to draw lines on 480 1.25" squares, so I am using my seam guide and going slowly. They are coming out ok, but it is taking some time. These little blocks are perfect for listening to an audiobook.

I think they will be really pretty as the outer pieced border for that medallion quilt. Hope I don't regret it! Four down, thirty six to go!

Eva baked a cake
Yesterday was our baking day so Eva and I made a cake. She decorated it so nicely. Unfortunately by the time she finished it, it was time for her to go home so she never got to taste it!

Happy Wednesday. Hope your week got off to a good start. We have had two days at 70°, so I am really feeling spring fever. That will change soon as we are expected to get more than a week of rain. Bye-bye January.

  1. I don’t care for the special rulers either and have found if I draw the lines and then move my needle over to the right I can sew them really well. I set my needle a couple clicks off center (towards the corner) and then aim to sew directly on the line I drew. It’s like making a scant seam to allow for the turn of the fabric without having to move my seam allowance off 1/4 inch.

  4. It’s a relief to hear someone else say they don’t like doing folded corners – me neither ! Your quilt is going to be beautiful. The blocks look so precise, as all your quilts do. Thanks for sharing.

  7. You’ve gotten pretty far on this one! I agree, the posies are cute. And whatever method you’re using, it’s working well. I guess Eva will just have to make another cake next week!

  13. Hi Nicole! You might want to try a laser pointer for those corners. The one I have is the SewQ Laser but I think there are others out there. This one was recommended by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville. Sure beats drawing those lines!!

  16. I agree with other comments made. Some of these specialty rulers are useless. I continue to draw lines and get great results!
Have a great weekend sewing Nicole! Eva is a sweetie!

  19. I hate folded corners too. Any more I just draw out the square print it out on my computer and paper piece it with very small stitches, so the printer paper will tear easier.

  22. Nope, I do not like folded corner units either! Or those rulers. I draw the lines or paper piece. Sometimes, I make a different block altogether!
