Friday Finish #5

IMG_1260

Mom discouraged bragging in our house when I was growing up, but I know she would give me some slack if I pat myself on the back for finishing this quilt top.  I have been struggling to get this done for more than two years!  The first challenge was the appliqued circles.  I am not skilled at hand applique, and have also had my issues with some machine applique techniques.  That whole starch thing was the biggest mess when I tried it!  Finally I figured out (with the help of many people's advice) how to do raw edge fusible machine applique, using a blanket stitch.  I was sure happy when the circles were done and had come out—well, circular.

Then I put the project away.  Don't get me wrong, I really liked it and sincerely wanted to finish it.  But that pieced checkerboard lattice around not only each block, but as an inner border as well?  I wasn't sure I was up for it.  Every few months I would go back to the project box however, take out the applique squares I was so pleased with, and tell myself I just had to finish it someday.

This summer was the time, and Friday, June 27 is the day!

The pattern is called Garden Fence from a book called Hearth and Home Quilts by Joanna Figueroa and Lisa Quan.  If you don't recognize their names, they are the Fig Tree designers.  I didn't purchase a single piece of fabric for this quilt top.  It was all scraps from my stash.

I really like this one and think it will look great in the family room with my Blended Neutrals quilt.  Some times you just have to stick to it and get it done.

  1. Both quilts are great, but I really like how the circle quilt turned out. I think the black and white check border set it off.

  3. Congrats on your finish, Nicole. That is not the quilt I was picturing at all! Didn’t you do another applique with the Buttercream and Fig fabrics? Why was I thinking that was Garden Fence? The circles are very cool and will go nicely with the neutral blended quilt.

  5. I love the circle quilt! I have never done anything with circles or curved piecing – I’m a wimp. The circles do look great! It looks like a quilt I need to add to my idea book.

  7. Both those tops are gorgeous. I like Garden Fence best though. And the fact that you got all those fabrics from your stash makes it even better. All those blocks look so different, but they’re all the same, aren’t they?

  9. When you showed the black and white lattice, I thought I had an idea what you were making. You see, I too, struggled with my circles and ended up doing what you did. Then when I got to the lattice for some reason they were not turning out to be the right size. I got tired of trying to adjust the seams to fit the blocks and so I ditched it and it is in a box in the closet. Some day, many moons from now, I just might get back to mine. Both quilts are great but I might like the last one for my very own! Nancy in WI

It’s giving me ideas too for some of the umpty-gazillion circle blocks I seem to have hanging around. Thanks for the inspiration!

  27. I made the Garden Fence quilt a few years ago and it’s still one of my favorites. Yours is so pretty and it will be even more beautiful when it’s quilted.

  31. I LOVE this quilt. I like high contrast and those black and white sashings are fabulous. I don’t know how you finish so much. I told myself when summer started that I was going to get so many quilts done but I haven’t done a whole lot. Just 2 wall quilts, a couple a table runners and a baby quilt. I am about to start Return to Sender so maybe I’ll get that one done.
