Friendship Star Blocks

How cute is this little mini quilt?  The measurements at this point are 19" x 28'.  There will be one last narrow border of one of the black prints, but it hasn't arrived yet.  I found someone on Etsy who was selling some of this Kathy Schmitz Round Robin fabric, which has been out since 2014, so that was super lucky.  Final measurement should be somewhere around 24 x 32.   Still not sure where I will put it, as all my surfaces seem to be covered, but where there is a will, there is a way to find room for another little quilt, right?

The pattern was inspired by a Miss Rosie Schnibble pattern called Mon Ami, which I changed up to be rectangular instead of square.

The most recent Moda Blockheads block came out this Wednesday, and as they do each week, the designers are asked a question about their quilting, their style or their methods.  This week's question was "Do you decorate with seasonal quilts?  Are they color themed, or do you use holiday motifs and fabrics?"

I am so interested to hear what you all would respond to that question!  Please leave a comment and tell us what your preference is.

Here's my answer:  In the past, like maybe 15 years ago, I would have made quilts with a holiday themed print.  However, over time,  my tastes have really changed.  Now I prefer a more subtle approach to my holiday quilts, and like to achieve that holiday look with the colors associated with the celebration rather than with fabrics printed with obvious symbols of the holiday.  Now I am not going to turn down a Christmassy fabric that has holly berries or snow flakes on it, but I will probably pass on the Rudolph and Santa head prints.

Although there is a vintagey collection coming out this spring called "Swell Christmas by Urban Chiks" that I am definitely going to purchase.  And the Santa head theme is clearly present.

So, maybe I am on the fence about holiday motif prints.  I guess it depends.  What do you all think?

  1. What a cutie your version of Mon Amie is! and am glad you found the needed fabric.
I’ve done both, suing Christmas theme fabric in years past and more Christmas colors recently. I really don’t need many more for Christmas, but I do have the fabrics!
    Hugs!

  4. I am with you. Some are OK, some (most) are too cutesy for me. I have a lot of red and green (mostly) quilts that are all out for the holidays. I really do enjoy getting them displayed. Have a great weekend!

  7. Good Morning, Nicole. If I had Christmas quilts to decorate with (which sadly, I don’t yet!!) they would be in the KT reds, burgundies, hunters and maybe some black or navies. There is something about that KT red !! My first Christmas quilt will be a KT log cabin and I also have a Sweet Scandinavian in Christmas colours that I haven’t made up yet. I spent my black friday money on greens and reds to go into my log cabin…maybe I’ll get sewing on it this year?!?!! Have a wonderful weekend.

  10. I mostly use Christmas colors and not Holiday fabrics. I do this for most holidays. I find that I can leave my Christmas quilts out longer, sometimes thru February by doing this. But I have made a couple that are only for Christmas due to the holiday fabric. I collect Santas and when I saw the upcoming Swell fabric the other day I knew it was one line I will need to get. He’s my favorite style Santa. 🙂

  13. Good Morning Nicole,
I do decorate with quilts/ quilted table runners for the holidays/change of seasons but rarely, if ever, use novelty fabrics. Most are too childish/cutesy for my taste. My home is Tuscan in design and gold/green in color palette so I can leave some holiday quilts up longer. Happy you are feeling better and enjoying your relaxing week. What is the status of your ill Bernina?

  16. Your friendship star mini quilt looks great! The upcoming black border will be a nice ‘frame’. I lean toward red, lime green, white & aqua Christmas quilt fabrics. I’m fine with snowflake & holly berry prints but usually avoid elves, Santas & reindeer. Have a nice, relaxing pain free weekend!

  19. Love your sweet Friendship blocks!
I mostly use red, white, aqua and green for my Christmas quilts so I don’t feel guilty when they stay out all winter long. But there are some Christmas motiv fabrics I really love like Aneela Hoey’s Christmas collection a few years ago. Or the Sweetwater Christmas fabrics. And yes the Swell collection is on my must-buy-list too. Have a wonderful weekend!

  22. I’m definitely in the holiday print camp… I LOVE novelty prints and have a healthy stash of them. This year I made a wonky tree quilt for my LR wall using lots of bright Christmas-y novelty fabrics. I can’t wait to get my hands on that Urban Chiks Christmas collection. That giant Santa head is fabulous! Merry Christmas!!

  25. Love your top! Great colors (as you always seem to do!). I like to use subtlety themed fabrics, something that reads more as a solid. I do have one quilted panel that screams Christmas, but the rest of my holiday quilts are mostly deemed Christmas because of the colors.

  28. I am so looking forward to that new Christmas collection, love the vintage look! I love your little Mon Ami too. I think I have definitely changed my seasonal decorating and trying to use more of the seasonal colors with motifs incorporated but not necessarily all prints. I love pumpkins and they work well from September through November mixed with all the lovely autumn colors. Red and white is another direction I really want to get more into as it seems to go with lots of seasons. I’m always up for a great tree or Santa pattern though.
