I know, how sad and pathetic is this? A portable potty, a shower stool, a walker and a four footed cane.
At long last, we sold the house we had Grandpa Larry living in. It was on the market for over a year. Most of the furniture and odds and ends had already been disposed of, but as you can see there were some miscellaneous objects still to deal with. That somehow I have to deal with…
So, that being said, I am super busy this week. Escrow closes the end of the month and things need to be sold off and cleared out pronto. Things are going pretty well, but at some point, my largely missing in action husband is going to have to show up and do the heavy stuff.
And for those of you who remember me writing about my 95 year old father in law, Grandpa Larry–he is doing ok. He now lives in what they euphemistically call "a memory care facility". He has lost a lot of weight and is very small and frail looking. He doesn't remember me, but smiles at me as if he knows I am someone he is supposed to love. He remembers my husband most of the time, but not always. Sometimes he thinks he is his brother. He can't speak, but always has a sweet smile for everyone. There is a woman patient in the facility who has taken a fancy to Larry. She pushes him in his wheel chair and is by his side as much as she is allowed. One day my husband was visiting Larry, and she inquired "Now, just who are you?" My husband replied "Why, I am Larry's son". There was a moment of silence and the woman said, "Well I am his wife and I certainly don't remember you". Much confusion ensued, but was soon forgotten.
The fire drama is over, skies are blue and the air is clear. Lots of people lost their homes. Over five hundred residences destroyed I believe. I gave away two boxes of miscellaneous kitchen equipment to an elderly couple who had lost everything to the fire. What can one do? Just help out as best one can I suppose.
Please excuse the lack of quilty or interesting posts this week. Hope to back on schedule next week.

Cheers that Grandpa Larry’s house sold at last although I understand the enormity of what that entails for you and your family. Hope some of the furniture and other things are worthy of keeping in the family.
What a sweet story about Grandpa Larry and his “wife”. After my mother stopped talking, she was able to happily sing the birthday song at her last birthday party.
More cheers that the fires are over and the air is clean! My heart goes out to those who lost so much. It was wonderful of you to share what you could of kitchen items for the elderly couple.
Take what time you need. We’ll be here!
Hugs!

Oh, Nicole, you have certainly been busy. Glad to hear Grandpa is going well even though it is sad watching them deteriorate.
What a relief for everyone now the fire drama is over, but again sad especially when so many have lost their homes and probably income. Fire is a meance.
Not looking forward to Summer here as they predict a hot one also.

Nicole, my heart is with you on all accounts. Life deals us some tough challenges. I appreciated your posts about the fires. We were on a motorcycle trip at the time, driving through California. We passed just north of the fires, and saw miles of fire trucks coming and going. We had to reroute part of our trip because of the fires – one of the places we were supposed to stay was destroyed. I can’t imagine how it is for everyone. So devastating emotionally as well as physically. Your story of the goats gave our whole group a shot of hope. Thank you for sharing.

I love reading your posts. Life isn’t just quilts. The items you’re showing in your post would be welcomed at a hospice. Our local hospice, Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice, takes in those supplies, sanitizes them and then loans them out to families who have loved ones who are in need of them but can’t afford them or will only be using them for a short rehab time. By the way, LOVED the story about the goats. God Bless.

Oh, Nicole, you’re in the midst of a huge job! It sounds as if Grandpa Larry has a nice friend to spend the days with. It’s hard to watch them slow down but he seems to have some companionship. I agree with Laura that you can donate the pictured items to a Senior Center, hospice or nursing home. Our Sr. Center ‘rents’ them for a modest fee to local residents who have a short-term need. I’m sure it would be much appreciated as was your generous kitchen gadget donation!

I have loved reading about Grandpa Larry. I laughed at your hubby’s encounter with his “wife”. It can be a sad time in a person’s life, but also amazing how people overcome their loneliness. So glad to hear the fires are over. It’s a threat that California has dealt with more than once. Praying for the families who lost so much.

So sad about the fires. But I’m glad the threat is over. Sad about Grandpa Larry too. I’m glad he still smiles. My mom just became paranoid and belligerent.

Enjoyed popping in for an update. You certainly are busy caring for so many around you. Take time for you too! Many hugs!

Thanks for the update on Grandpa Larry. I was wondering what happened to him but didn’t want to ask in case I had missed a sad post. I remember how happy he used to be when you’d visit him with Eva, so hopefully he won’t forget everything. My dads memory is deteriorating, as is his health, so I know what you mean when they lose weight and get smaller. Hugs to you and him.

Gald that Grandpa Larry is well and you finally sold his house. One thing you can cross of your to-do-list and more important of your mind.
It’s great that you helped the couple I’m sure they’re happy about the things you gave them. That and the fact that they are not alone and people take care of them.
Hope you have a great week (quilting or not)!

Congrats on getting the house sold finally! Funny and sweet stories about Grandpa Larry. So glad to hear blue skies are back. The pictures of devastated neighborhoods are so sad. I read that some of the counties affected are poor and help is greatly needed.

Those items are in high demand among knee replacement patients, you should easily be able to move them along. 😉 Loved the Gpa Larry and his ‘wife’ story… so sweet. Have a good day!

You must have been reading my mind. I was just wondering about Grandpa this morning.

Life has a way of balancing out and looks like perhaps yours will get there. Glad that things are settling down and as my mom would say “onward and upward”…. have a nice weekend!

Oh my, Nicole. What a sad and sweet story about your father-in-law. Thank you for your posts about the fire, and your generous, loving heart for those who’ve lost so much. I’m from the Bay area of California, and so appreciated your personal updates about the fire. So glad you stayed safe. I’ll smile often when I think about your story of your husband and your father-in-law’s “wife” friend.
