Gobble Gobble

"Gobble Gobble", said the turkey.
"Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day.
Will you eat me?
How you treat me!
I think I'll run away!"

This is a little placemat I just had to make when I saw it on Lori Holt's blog.  She has a tutorial for making the 12 inch turkey block, and a pattern you can buy to make the placemat.  I just flew by the seat of my pants to make the placemat and didn't buy her pattern.  I framed the 12 inch block with 1 1/2" strips, and added 3" strips to the sides.

I did buy her book "Quilty Fun" last year and think I will use some of the ideas in that book to make other seasonal placemats for Eva.  Don't you think mittens would be just the thing for December?

The tutorial instructions for making the block are ok, but you do have to be somewhat intuitive.  She doesn't give yardage requirements, but you pretty much can make this out of a couple of fat quarters (for the background and backing) and scraps for the other pieces.  The turkey legs are a small zig zag stitch, which I think is super cute.  Wouldn't this be an adorable thing to do for your "kids table" this Thanksgiving?  And every "kid" could take home their own turkey placemat!

Eva seems to like it, particularly the little pocket on the right for holding her silverware.  It was a fun and quick project.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  4. What a nice grandmother you are! Eva is a lucky girl. I have a granddaughter just about her age, so always enjoy seeing what you make for her. I’m currently working on a cute Debbie Mumm Christmas stocking.

  7. Applause, applause for one of the best Grammie’s on the planet! The turkey placemat is charming, especially with that wee pocket, and just imagine Eva’s delight with seasonal and holiday placemats made just for her! Of course, each placemat will need a little pocket, too.
I’m making two simple table runners with some cute Scottie fabric. These are for AMIL’s younger sisters who live together and own a Scottie.
    Hugs!

  10. Oh. My. Gosh. Darn!! How adorable is that??? I like your color scheme better than Lori’s. I may have to attempt something like that, although with making everyone’s Christmas gifts as my top priority time may be too short.
