Help. Family wedding this Friday. My hair has half an inch of grey roots showing and I can't get to my hairdresser. Can I do it myself? Do I dare? What do you think?
Ooops. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Absolutely do it yourself. I think these days it’s hard to do something really wrong or drastic. Give it a go.

I do mine… Use a good brand…I use Preference and pick one shade lighter than you want to end up with.

If you’r not feeling that brave, you can buy a non-permanent root touch-up product. Most salons sell this. It works for a quick fix. Goes on with a little comb…washes right out.

Nicole, the second picture is of the Dutch queen! With a bit of Photoshop, I would say…

I hate to disagree with the other ladies but a big NO! As a hairstylist the products we use are different than the over the counter products. The level of chemicals in a store brought product is stronger than what your stylist uses and will result in both hair damage and a tonal difference. Do you know what color level and tone your hairdresser uses? The colors of the ladies hair on the box are never accurate! Do you believe that any of the Hollywood stars that promote these haircolor products really use a do it yourself product? Same with the models on the box. Additionally, the length of the root you have is more difficult to cover at home. Haircolor requires heat to process and the longer the root the less heat resulting in a brassy ring between old color and newly applied color. If you absolutely must than use a no lift color to tone your grey, it will fade out with washing with no damage to your natural hair or colored hair. As far as a do it yourself idea, remember the home waxing (LOL), and make an appointment with a professional. Good Luck.

I’d never do it myself! Can your regular hairdresser recommend someone else for a quick partial?

I don’t have a suggestion about an alternative to the gray stripe (that’s what I used to call it!), but I vote with the “don’t do it” crowd. I did my own haircolor for years until I turned my hair purple. After that I swore I’d let my hairdresser do it – I love the color purple, but not on my hair!!

Since I stopped coloring my hair 5 years ago I guess I can’t help. But I now love my grey hair. Hubby calls it my sparkly hair and his hair is now mostly white. Good luck with your dilemma. This is why I stopped coloring!

I think some bribing is in order……isn’t there SOMETHING Andrea want’s?? If that doesn’t work, try blackmail. Don’t try doing it at home, have you forgotten your home waxing experience!!

Go for it. I started doing my own 6 months ago and my hair is fine. I use Perfect 10, a lighter shade than mine. Works great and it is cheap.

I think I would sit at the hairdressers and cry until she took pity and did it for me if I was you. On the other hand – and I confess I’ve never tried – how hard can it be to do it yourself? Otherwise – wear a truly fabulous hat!

They have little root fixers now that come in a tube just like mascara for last minute issues just like this. You just brush it on to the hair. It washes out and doesn’t mess with your next color appt. It might take awhile depending how much you need to cover but it will save you the grief of a bad color job. It will just cover up the gray. They sell them at salons and probably the beauty supply stores. Good luck 🙂

I’ve enjoyed reading the comments. I’m a big chicken when it comes to do something to my hair. I pay regularly to have my grey colored. I’m afraid to do it myself. Would you consider going somewhere else – like a beauty school? Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I do my own most of the time and have my hairdresser do the color a couple of times a year. I use the formula she gave me (a mix of 3 Clairol colors) and it works just fine! Maybe you could get a friend to put the stuff on if you’re scared to do it yourself?

Yes!! Do it yourself! 🙂 You can’t screw it up THAT badly. And when you buy the color, buy a bottle of PRELL. I know. But a trusted hairdresser of mine told me that if a color doesn’t come out right or is too dark or fakey looking, you can get most of it out by scrubbing a few times immediately after with Prell, because apparently Prell is super abrasive. 🙂 Good luck!

Be careful.
Be very, very careful.
You CAN screw it up that badly, and trying to “fix it”, will only make the situation worse. Not to mention what it will do to your hair.
I would use a temporary touch-up and perhaps find a very stylish, oh-so-elegant hat. Or beg and plead with your hairstylist to either fit you in or recommend a temporary fill-in. As someone who used to “do her own”, the difference between the professionals and the amateurs is HUGE. If you’re that desperate and can’t find another “pro” to do it, I recommend asking your hairstylist to recommend which product you should use, being specific for color, base, level, etc.
Good luck. 🙂

Sure, do it yourself. I have been doing my own hair for over 40 years with never a hitch.
