Halloween Figs Month 3

Halloween Figs month 3
I didn't sew much yesterday, but did make four blocks for month 3 of the Halloween Figs sew along by Quilt Spot. I made two little orange "simple stars", the top block on the right that looks kind of like four flowers, and the little orange and black pinwheel block below it.

This is a fun quilt to piece. There are some applique blocks that will be coming, so I watched a couple of Lori Holt's YouTube tutorials on machine applique. She has a cool technique where she sews a lightweight interfacing to the right side of her applique units, then turns them inside out. This means the edges are turned under which makes for very tidy applique by hand or machine. She used an applique turning tool made by Clover that I ordered. When the time comes, I think I will give her technique a try. Let me know if you have done it her way and how you liked it!

I have to say, Lori Holt is a pretty amazing businesswoman. She has so many products she has come up with, it is mind-blowing. She has a line of fabric, a line of matching threads, five or six books, a book stand, all sorts of trim tools, umpteen template sets, mini design boards… the list goes on and on. Plus, she is always doing a sew-along of some kind, plus has a very elaborate blog, AND a YouTube channel. I don't know how she does it.

Have you done any of her projects? Do you like her fabric? Her style is a bit "cute" for me, but I do enjoy working with her fabric from time to time. Good grief, I've bought enough of it! My red sampler project is all her patterns and fabrics. Her books are great. They are spiral-bound and lie flat and her block patterns are always in two sizes. I have a couple of her mini design boards which are great for organizing blocks with a ton of pieces. I guess I have to say I am a fan of hers.

  1. I agree that Lori’s style is too cute for me, but she is very entertaining and fun to follow. I am a cross stitcher; and when she has time to film her stitching, it’s so inspiring. I swear that woman has four hands to keep up with all she sews and stitches.

  4. I have used the interfacing method. ( I do not do needle turn applique.)
I enjoyed it. It worked out well.

  7. I have used interfacing and am pleased with it. I’m working on a quilt right now that has a lot of applique (not my favorite technique), and I used a fusible interfacing to iron my pieces to the top and then machine stitched around. Worked very well.
Pat Sloan has a fall project coming up in September using Figs fabrics that I will be doing. Yours is looking very cute. I agree Lori is a real dynamo!

  10. I made this quilt and love it. I like to hand appliqué and these
Looked easy but my skills were rusty and I subbed pieced blocks.
I am going to do Lori’s quilt with all the Dresden flowers though and have it a lot cut out. I am watching all the videos now and deciding
Which appliqué technique to use. I have her templates that go with the kit(not acrylic but plastic of some sort) I am thinking about doing the circles and leaves by thread basting in seam line then placing template
On wrong side and drawing up. Spritz with water,
Press, remove template and ready to stitch. I have made hundreds of circles like this with good results. I have never
Used interfacing as I worried about stiffness or what my machine quilter would think.

  13. Your Halloween Figs blocks look great! I’m familiar with Lori Holt’s quilts but haven’t spent much time finding out about her methods. From what you & some of your readers say maybe I should!

  16. Eleanor Burns used this method for applique umpteen years ago. Thinking it needs to be ultra lightweight interfacing so that the seam is not too bulky to applique. Good luck!

  19. I really love her vintage inspired patterns. I really don’t like her fabric.
I’ve used her technique for machine applique and kind of liked it for specific things.

  22. I have tried Lori’s applique technique.. didn’t work so well for me. I use iron on interfacing and zig zag on the machine. Not satin stitch, but close, using a small stitch. Then I outline it all with fray check. So far stuff is holding up well 🤞
I am gearing up to do Christmas Cheer from Buttermilk Basin using fabric instead of wool

  25. I’m working on the Prairie meadow quilt— i tried the interfacing, but wasn’t satisfied with the points— you have to accept they are rounded. Take a look at appliquick paper before you decide. I have many of her books, some cross stitch, and fabric—- she is incredibly prolific— I don’t see how even a die hard fan could keep up!

  28. I have not purchased any of Lori Holt’s quilting products but I have seen them and am amazed at all she turns out. She is also into crossstitch and I love her flosstube videos of all the stitched items she has done. Her business acumen is off the charts. I’m not into her cute, far girl style of quilting, but her crossstitch is gorgeous. I wonder if she sleeps?

  31. I am in the process of doing my first zlori Holt quilt. It can be rather frustrating trying to get sharp points with her interfacing method. She makes it look so easy! I think her templates and tutorials are great. She is extremely talented. I think it would be fun to use her templates using wool and forget the turning!
