Over a year ago I started a block of the month program through The Quilt Spot. This was Joanna Figueroa's Halloween sampler quilt done in her Fig Tree & Co Harvest Moon fabric collection. Each month I received a package with the block patterns and ample amounts of fabric to complete them from the Quilt Spot.
Like so many things this past year, I have let it languish. I kept up pretty well for the first 5 months, but set it aside and moved on to other things. Time to get it back out and work on it! This one is just too pretty not to finish.
Each month there is typically more than one block to make. Month 6, where I picked up, has one pieced block and two appliqued blocks. The pieced block is above. I haven't squared it up yet, but it should measure 12 1/2" when I do.
Do you enjoy applique? I am too impatient to do much in the way of hand applique, but I will do machine applique when needed for a project. Joanna is a fan of the starch method of applique. This is a method of preparing the fabric pieces for applique either by hand or by machine. She has a great YouTube tutorial with Kimberley from The Fat Quarter Shop where she demonstrates her method.
As you can see, I've got my pieces all ready for the next step. Next up is to paint the seam allowances of each of these pieces with liquid starch and iron them down around the freezer paper templates. I plan to work on this today and hopefully start my machine applique. Come back Friday and see how I do!
The block of the month program for making the Halloween Figs quilt as I am doing it has closed. However, The Quilt Spot is going to host a new block of the month program for this pattern featuring Joanna's upcoming collection Denim and Daisies. Don't miss out on this if you love the pattern and the fabric collection.

This is going to be a lovely Halloween quilt. Fig Tree fabrics are so pretty. You’ve certainly been making progress on finishing projects. I was going through my project boxes of UFOs, I couldn’t believe how many in process that I have. I need to get busy working on those before I can even think about starting something new. I love the Denim & Daisies version, beautiful fabric. (This may be why I have so many unfinished projects.)

I made this quilt as a BOM in 2021, when it first came out. I finally got it quilted and hung up last Halloween, it’s so pretty. I have made a few scrappy quilts with the left over pieces, I like the blue version too.

Both of the color ways are soft & pretty looking. I think people either love or hate appliqué! No in-between! I’ll check back to see your finished product. Happy starching!

I forgot about this quilt! I love her fabric lines/colors but not a fan of her directions. That pattern looks beautiful in the blues too.
