Hanging Out In the Studio

002

What a lovely day I had yesterday.  I hung out in my studio a good part of the day, puttering with this and that.  No deadlines, no pressures, just futzing with whatever my heart led me to do.

Since I am working on my Fig Tree Dresden Plates, I decided I needed a thread catcher to match my project.

I am kidding, sort of.  My other thread catcher lives up in the house next to my embroidery work, and I have been wanting one down in the studio next to my sewing machine.  I grabbed a layer cake of "Fresh Cotton" and pulled out two coordinating 10" squares and whipped up this little thread catcher in about 15 minutes.  Gosh those things are quick.  This time I left out the fusible interfacing, and to tell you the truth, it doesn't seem to make any difference if it is in there or not.  If you haven't gotten around to making one of these for every gal in your sewing group, you should consider it.  Here is a link to three tutorials, including mine.

I only constructed two more Dresden Plates, but sure do like looking at how cute they are.  These could become seriously addictive.  There are my Granny Squares smiling down at me from the design wall as well.  Those things make me happy!  Right now I am so in the mood for feminine, springy colors.

Oh, and here is an apparatus that I am currently enjoying very much.  It is a thread holder.

It was sent to me by a very thoughtful friend, and I have really been appreciating both its beauty and its functionality.  Here is another picture of it, without any thread strung through it.

Pauls thread holder

This is made by Paul's Metal Petals.   The cone thread holder is such a stable way to hold your thread while you piece or machine quilt.  The thinner spindle on the right can be used to stack extra bobbins.  A very decorative and extremely practical addition to any sewing table!!

  1. Love the peeks around your working studio and that giant design wall!! JOY!
Cute thread catcher and I cannot wait to make one or more. I use an extra coffee mug with a quilting design as my current thread catcher.
LOVE your pink and jazzy Granny Square blocks and the growing number of lovely Dresden Plates. You are certainly back up to your usual creative speed.
I’ve seen the pretty thread holder in a catalog and had wondered how well it really works. Thanks for the information and link!
    Hugs!

  3. My kids purchased me one of the thread holders for Christmas a couple of years ago! When I asked for it I had no idea how much I would love it! I don’t know how I ever sewed without it!! Not only does it add a little whimsy to the studio it is very functional.

  5. I want one of those thread holders sooooo bad! I have been wanting one for a few years now but cannot bring myself to buy it. I think eventually I’ll break down and buy one but in the meantime, I’ll admire yours.
BTW: Your design wall looks very healthy! Very happy to see your “funk” is moving along.

  7. I’ve never used a thread holder like that. What are the advantages?
I love a quiet day with “no pressure” quilting.

Love the thread flower! ;O) Your dresdens inspire me to cut into some Fig Tree I’ve been hoarding not sure what to do with… those are very cute! I also love the grannies!

  25. Loove your projects on your wall! I cut out some dresden plates out of an old Fig Trees charm pack and love them too…is there a bad Fig Tree fabric? Great tutorial on the thread catcher, can’t wait to make one. My friends would be shocked and impressed I actually finished something for them 🙂

  27. great progress…so how is your design wall made? I have a thread catcher out of my coveted “French General”…it was a Christmas gift and I love having it by my stitching chair! I need another for my sewing machine. Enjoy your weekend (what is left).
