Hiding Fabric

 No, I don't mean hiding fabric, as in hiding it from your family so they don't do a hoarder intervention.  I mean fabric that is hiding from YOU.  Look at that fold of fabric in the photo above.  I had purchased it maybe five years ago, and it has been sitting in a bin labelled "William Morris" through two house moves.  For my latest project, I dipped into the bin and pulled out what I thought were several half yard cuts of fabric.  Evidently when I bought them, the person who cut the fabric stacked five pieces, cut them all together, and folded the pieces together.  What I thought was a half yard of a rather boring print was actually five fat quarters of some very nice stuff.

Has that happened to you?  It is a good lesson to unfold that stack of fabrics when you get home, before storing away in your stash.  Otherwise, it is the old "out of sight out of mind" adage again.  If you are like me, you will completely forget about what you have.

And look, it wasn't just the one stack of fabrics, there were SIX of them like that!  I ended up with a whole bunch of great fat quarters that I didn't even remember I had.

I even had two stacks of blues, light and medium, in addition to the taupes, greens, pinks and reds.

Just look at all that!  What I thought was six half yard pieces turned out to be thirty fat quarters.  Good heavens.  I find the most amazing things when I shop at home.

  4. Yes! This has happened to me! It wasn’t quite so many prints, but it was a bunch. I’ve learned the same lesson, go through everything as soon as I get home and separate it out!
    Glad you found some new pretties to play with!

  10. Good heavens. That’s too funny. But, actually, the same thing happened to me. I purchased quite a few different Fig Tree fabrics and when I received them, I put them in my stash with my Fig Tree fabrics. Imagine my surprise and delight when I pulled out the Fig Tree fabrics a couple years later, to discover there were actually four or five different fabrics folded together! I was thrilled!

  16. What a great find…now if I could find the backing fabric for my Grandson’s quilt. Yes, I did buy it, lol. Do you think in absent mindfulness I might have wrapped two fabrics around one comic board earlier this year? Oh, I hope not but where is it.
    Your William Morris fabric selection is lovely. Hope you are managing to sort out that ruler problem.

    It’s happened to me, too, but at first I thought some of the fabrics I’d bought hadn’t been sent to me. It was only when looking again that I spied a tiny edge of a different fabric sticking out and it was all there.
    My family laughs that I’m in a padded room and as long as there’s a pathway, all is well!

  49. That’s so funny! Know what I do? I fold the fabric as it is being cut in the store. That way it is folded the right way and I can just put it away when I get home. I think the store personal kind of like it, too, for they can go faster if there is a line of people waiting.

    I recently refolded all my stash on to comic book boards – I’m pretty sure I got the idea from you. I LOVE it! Fat quarters I keep in a separate bin, folded all the same way so I can see quickly what I have.

  67. What a great fabric find! That is why I always retold my stuff when I get home because I know I’ll forget what I bought. It’s almost like finding a fat quarter tower 🙂

  76. Haha you’re funny. You made me giggle. That’s a very nice collection you’ve found there. I only giggle coz I think I’m aware of everything I’ve got, but I get nicely surprised when I have a good clean up and look through.
