How I Really Have Been Spending My Time

008
Now here is a book I never in a million years would have predicted I would read.  The first in the George R. R. Martin Game of Thrones series.  The genre is fantasy, and aside from the Lord of the Rings books and A Once and Future King, it is a genre I have completely ignored.

A friend highly recommended the series, so I picked up the first book.  The characters are so sharply drawn, and the intrigue, the treachery, the suspense are keeping me right on the edge of my seat as I read.  I can barely put it down!

There will be six or seven books in the series, and at around 800 pages per book, I may be reading these for the next five years.

  1. Interesting! I’d never heard of this series so will have to check it out.
If you’ve never read “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis, I recommend that 7 book series for readers of all ages.
This week while we were without electricity due to the hurricane, I re-read the first 3 books in the Mitford series by Jan Karon.
    I love to read!
    Hugs!

  3. I have been a fan of the series for several years now and have recommended and given the books as gifts countless times! Don’t read too fast, as the next book in the series will probably not be published for a least a couple of years.

  5. I think I’d like to read those too. Not a genre I am drawn to either in the past, but these books have been made into a series on HBO. I’ve watched it with a little interest. My guess is I would love the books a whole lot more.

  7. Ha! I would never have expected you’d like them! But then again they’re lovely with all the drama and relationships and whatnot.
If you ever end up on a road trip the guy who reads the audio versions is amazing. Grab one from the local library and you won’t be disappointed. In fact, now that I think of it, you don’t even need a road trip because I listened to the third one while I was sewing my Madeline’s Good Fortune. They’re great books to listen to you while you sew.

  19. I read and LOVED My Antonia on your recommendation, so I will go for this series as well.
IMHO, the best way to find good books is by recommendation…
Your little granddaughter Eva is LOVELY! (I’ve been away for a while due to health issues.)
I also intend to try your crosshatching quilting method, to blast thru that rut~ “fear of quilting!”

  21. Question…my son (8th grader, 14 years old) loves this genre of books – is this something appropriate for his age? I personally am not a fantasy kind of girl and so I generally go on the recommendation of his aunts. I have never heard of this series or author. Your opinion? TIA

  23. Oh dear me. I would say definitely not for an 8th grader. Very mature and somewhat bizarre sexual themes and too much violence in my opinion. Usually I steer clear of books with too much weirdness or violence, but the characterization, plot and suspense in this series have me hooked.
This series is not for kids, for sure. In my opinion, even the HBO series based on Game of Thrones is too mature for 14 year olds, although I have been told I am conservative. I recommend The Once and Future King (by T.H. White) or the Trilogy of the Ring (Tolkein) books for the junior high level.

  25. Thanks for letting me know. Since I have no knowledge of the series I thought I would ask. I usually peruse the teen section at bookstores and pick out books for him. He doesn’t always like what I pick, but if a friend recommends the book then he will have a change of heart. Thanks again!
