I am still fiddling around with fabrics for the Viola project. I want those flowers to be really colorful and happy, and wasn't embracing my red/yellow/orange palette so much. I remembered that I had purchased these fat quarters of a collection called Mimosa by Robert Kaufman from Fat Quarter Shop some months back, and when I took them out of the drawer where they were stored, I decided that maybe I should go with them. I still have my red, yellow and orange, but there is also that great lime green and the pretty turquoise. That is more the look I want to go with.
Eight different black prints will do for the flower pots, and I'll use a medium grey for all the stems and flower bases. Aren't those colors gorgeous?
I am still not ready to do any cutting. I had to order a brighter white background fabric than my usual Kona Snow, which was too creamy. I also needed more of the grey for the stems.
Also, and this is so hard for me right now, is that I am going to have to do some figuring before I start cutting. I am still having some difficulty focusing, but need to do some math prior to diving in. You see, the pattern shows all the flowers in one color way, and I am using four. I have to calculate how many half square triangles and other units to make for each flower. The piecing for this pattern is pretty tricky and I don't want to mess up. Luckily I have all fat quarters and the pattern calls for fat eighths, so I have some fabric to sacrifice. Let's hope it doesn't come to that!

Those are perfect colors Nicole and like them very much…. yes, you just need to go one day at a time. Things do fall back into place as you go…. keep your chin up!

Love the new array of colors and those cheerful additions will be perfect! Isn’t changing your mind about colors, fabrics, blocks, and even the quilt size just about the most wonderful part of quilting? It is for me! I enjoy the freedom of choices start to finish.
Perhaps the math involved in this quilt will help your focus or perhaps this is a quilt to take your time planning while you dive into something easier to make just now? That’s food for thought.
Big hugs!

Great fabrics. I’m sure when you are really ready to do the math it will come quickly. You are so good at changing things up a bit.

Love the colors and fabrics you’ve picked although I’m sure a quiltin yellow, orange and red would have been, too. And I ffel your pain about the math but somehow it seems I’m doing more (quilting) math now then I did in school;-)

I like the brighter fabric. For years I was stuck in doing quilts in the warm “country” colors. I still like that look but I find myself going for the brighter fabric these days!

This is going to be a gorgeous quilt. I bought a fat-quarter bundle of the Mimosa collection a few months ago but, so far, have not cut into it yet. Every time I think I’m going to use it, I back out and use something else. I’m still looking for just the right pattern, and when I find it, I know I’ll have a gorgeous quilt just like you.

These fabrics are bright and beautiful and will be a pleasure to work with. Don’t stress about the math. Sometimes I need to cut just some and sew just some and see how it all is working out before i commit to cutting everything ahead of time and having the math all worked out. Enjoy!
